Initial test results with a single-cylinder rhombic-drive Stirling engine
A 6 kW (8 hp), single-cylinder, rhombic-drive Stirling engine was restored to operating condition, and preliminary characterization tests run with hydrogen and helium as the working gases. Initial tests show the engine brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) with hydrogen working gas to be within the range of BSFC observed by the Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, in 1966. The minimum system specific fuel consumption (SFC) observed during the initial tests with hydrogen was 669 g/kW hr (1.1 lb/hpx hr), compared with 620 g/kWx hr (1.02 lb/hpx hr) for the Army tests. However, the engine output power for a given mean compression-space pressure was lower than for the Army tests. The observed output power at a working-space pressure of 5 MPa (725 psig) was 3.27 kW (4.39 hp) for the initial tests and 3.80 kW (5.09 hp) for the Army tests. Joining Forces of Bayesian and Frequentist Methodology: A Study for Inference in the Presence of Non-Identifiability
Increasingly complex applications involve large datasets in combination with
non-linear and high dimensional mathematical models. In this context,
statistical inference is a challenging issue that calls for pragmatic
approaches that take advantage of both Bayesian and frequentist methods. The
elegance of Bayesian methodology is founded in the propagation of information
content provided by experimental data and prior assumptions to the posterior
probability distribution of model predictions. However, for complex
applications experimental data and prior assumptions potentially constrain the
posterior probability distribution insufficiently. In these situations Bayesian
Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling can be infeasible. From a frequentist point
of view insufficient experimental data and prior assumptions can be interpreted
as non-identifiability. The profile likelihood approach offers to detect and to
resolve non-identifiability by experimental design iteratively. Therefore, it
allows one to better constrain the posterior probability distribution until
Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling can be used securely. Using an application
from cell biology we compare both methods and show that a successive
application of both methods facilitates a realistic assessment of uncertainty

Evaluation of directionally solidified eutectic superalloys for turbine blade applications
Alloys from the following systems were selected for property evaluation: (1) gamma/gamma-Mo (Ni-base, rods of Mo); (2) gamma-beta (Ni-base, lamellae or rods of (Ni, Fe/Co Al); and (3) gamma-gamma (Ni-base rods of Ni3Al gamma). The three alloys were subjected to longitudinal and transverse tensile and rupture tests from 750 C to 1100 C, longitudinal shear strength was measured at several temperatures, resistance to thermal cycling to 1150 C was determined, cyclic oxidation resistance was evaluated at 750 C and 1100 C, and each system was directionally solidified in an alumina shell mold turbine shape to evaluate mold/metal reactivity. The gamma/gamma Mo system has good rupture resistance, transverse properties and processability, and is a high potential system for turbine blades. The gamma-beta system has good physical properties and oxidation resistance, and is a potential system for turbine vanes. The gamma-gamma system has good high temperature rupture resistance and requires further exploratory research
Flavour-Condensate-induced Breaking of Supersymmetry in Free Wess-Zumino Fluids
Recently we argued that a particular model of string-inspired quantum
space-time foam (D-foam) may induce oscillations and mixing among flavoured
particles. As a result, rather than the mass-eigenstate vacuum, the correct
ground state to describe the underlying dynamics is the flavour vacuum,
proposed some time ago by Blasone and Vitiello as a description of quantum
field theories with mixing. At the microscopic level, the breaking of
target-space supersymmetry is induced in our space-time foam model by the
relative transverse motion of brane defects. Motivated by these results, we
show that the flavour vacuum, introduced through an inequivalent representation
of the canonical (anti-) commutation relations, provides a vehicle for the
breaking of supersymmetry (SUSY) at a low-energy effective field theory level;
on considering the flavour-vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum
tensor and comparing with the form of a perfect relativistic fluid, it is found
that the bosonic sector contributes as dark energy while the fermion
contribution is like dust. This indicates a strong and novel breaking of SUSY,
of a non-perturbative nature, which may characterize the low energy field

Expanded Very Large Arrays Observations of a Proto-Cluster of Molecular Gas-Rich Galaxies at z = 4.05
We present observations of the molecular gas in the GN20 proto-cluster of galaxies at z = 4.05 using the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA). This group of galaxies is the ideal laboratory for studying the formation of massive galaxies via luminous, gas-rich starbursts within 1.6 Gyr of the big bang. We detect three galaxies in the proto-cluster in CO 2-1 emission, with gas masses (H_2) between 10^(10) and 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙. The emission from the brightest source, GN20, is resolved with a size ~2'' and has a clear north-south velocity gradient, possibly indicating ordered rotation. The gas mass in GN20 is comparable to the stellar mass (1.3 × 10^(11) × (α/0.8) M_⊙ and 2.3 × 10^(11) M_⊙, respectively), and the sum of gas plus stellar mass is comparable to the dynamical mass of the system (~3.4 × 10^(11)[sin (i)/sin (45°)]^(–2) M_⊙), within a 5 kpc radius. There is also evidence for a tidal tail extending another 2'' north of the galaxy with a narrow velocity dispersion. GN20 may be a massive, gas-rich disk that is gravitationally disturbed, but not completely disrupted. There is one Lyman-break galaxy (BD29079) in the GN20 proto-cluster with an optical spectroscopic redshift within our search volume, and we set a 3σ limit to the molecular gas mass of this galaxy of 1.1 × 10^(10) × (α/0.8) M_⊙
