The Effects of X-rays and Beta Rays (Tritium) on the Growth of \u3cem\u3eRickettsia mooseri\u3c/em\u3e and \u3cem\u3eRickettsia akari\u3c/em\u3e in Embryonate Eggs
The growth of Rickettsia mooseri was accelerated and quantitatively increased in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg during the growth period. The eggs of a group containing 22.5 mc./egg showed only a slight increase in the rate of growth of organisms; the infections in the eggs of a group given 11.2 mc./egg did not differ significantly from those of the control group. On the other hand, growth of R. akari was inhibited in embryonate eggs containing tritium oxide at levels of 180, 90, and 45 mc./egg, and partially inhibited in groups containing 22.5 and 11.2 mc./egg. The patterns of growth of R. mooseri and of R. akari exposed to tritium oxide for 6 hours prior to inoculation into embryonate eggs did not differ significantly from that of the control group
Determination of Flaw Growth Characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V Sheet in the Solution-Treated and Aged Condition
The specific experimental investigation undertaken was designed to answer these questions on Ti-6Al-4V in the solution treated and aged condition. The defect growth and fracture characteristics were studied in parent (unwelded) and welded sheet material. The results of the study indicate that cryogenic proof testing will screen smaller size defects than proof testing at ambient conditions. However some unusual crack growth behavior during the proof test simulation suggests that some further study be made of stress and time duration effects
A mutant of Neurospora crassa deficient in cytochrome c heme lyase activity cannot import cytochrome c into mitochondria
The nuclear cyt-2-1 mutant of Neurospora crassa is characterized by a gross deficiency of cytochrome c (Bertrand, H., and Collins, R. A. (1978) Mol. Gen. Genet. 166, 1-13). The mutant produces mRNA that can be translated into apocytochrome c in vitro. Apocytochrome c is also synthesized in vivo in cyt-2-1, but it is rapidly degraded and thus does not accumulate in the cytosol. Mitochondria from wild-type cells bind apocytochrome c made in vitro from either wild-type or cyt-2-1 mRNA and convert it to holocytochrome c. This conversion depends on the addition of heme by cytochrome c heme lyase and is coupled to translocation of cytochrome c into the intermembrane space. Mitochondria from the cyt-2-1 strain are deficient in the ability to bind apocytochrome c. They are also completely devoid of cytochrome c heme lyase activity. These defects explain the inability of the cyt-2-1 mutant to convert apocytochrome c to the holo form and to import it into mitochondria
Assessing Library Services With LibQUAL+: A Case Study
There is a growing body of literature on the development of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) assessment tool, LibQUAL+ (Cook, Heath, Thompson). Because LibQUAL+ is a fairly recent innovation, there has been little published on its use in individual libraries. The 2001 LibQUAL+ survey at Texas Tech (Kemp) and the 2002 survey at the University of Washington (Hiller) are two exceptions. Both were conducted at ARL libraries, which is appropriate as LibQUAL+ is an ARL program. ARL has announced a forthcoming title, From Data to Action: Libraries Report on Their Use of LibQUAL+™ Survey Findings, but this has yet to be published. According to the publisher’s announcement, “This special collection of articles will highlight practical examples of how libraries are using LibQUAL+ data in their local libraries as an assessment and evaluation mechanism. It will present the continued efforts in which librarians have engaged to promote service quality assessment within their respective organizations as well as externally across peer institutions.” (Askew) When reading this blurb one would expect to learn how the results of the LibQUAL+ survey were used to improve services, but nothing is promised regarding the mechanics of instituting the survey. This paper will elaborate on the survey process at a non-ARL library, from conducting the survey through the implementation of service improvements in response to the results as provided by ARL

An attempt was made to identify the olfactory cues produced by Douglas-fir seeds which attract deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) to the seeds. The olfactometers used are described, and the merits of different statistical analyses of the data are discussed. The odors produced by whole Douglas-fir seed and by the endosperm were preferred among the fractions tested to date. Micropuncture studies of proximal tubule albumin concentrations in normal and nephrotic rats
A B S T R A C T The concentration of serum albumin in proximal tubule fluid of normal rats and animals with aminonucleoside nephrosis was studied using renal micropuncture techniques. Albumin was quantitated by an ultramicrodisc electrophoresis method capable of measuring 3 X 10'" g of albumin, in 10 nl volumes. With this sensitivity., only small samples of tubule fluid were required for analysis. Collectifn times could be kept short, therefore decreasing the opportunity for sample contamination with extraneous serum albumin. The measured mean concentration of albumin in proximal tubule fluid (1 mg/100 ml in females and 0.7 mg/ 100 ml in males) was somewhat lower than values reported by others, but even these values are apt to have been artifactually high as a result of animal preparation and trace contamination of samples during micropuncture. Rats injected with aminonucleoside of puromycin 4 days earlier, showed a significant increase in tubulefluid albumin concentration coincident with a fall in serum albumin concentration and a 43-fold increase in urine albumin concentration. Tubular absorption of albumin was small relative to that of water. Although albumin filtration was significantly increased over that in normal animals, the glomerular basement membrane still served as a highly efficient barrier to albumin transfer
The potential impact of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) on fisheries
The commercial development of ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) operations will involve some environmental perturbations for which there is no
precedent experience. The pumping of very large volumes of warm surface water and cold deep water and its subsequent discharge will result in the impingement, entrainment, and redistribution of biota. Additional stresses to biota will be caused by biocide usage and temperature depressions. However, the artificial upwelling of nutrients associated with the pumping of cold deep water, and the artificial
reef created by an OTEC plant may have positive effects on the local environment.
Although more detailed information is needed to assess the net effect of an OTEC operation on fisheries, certain assumptions and calculations are made supporting the conclusion that the potential risk to fisheries is not significant enough to deter the early development of IDEe.
