A maximum spreading speed for magnetopause reconnection
Past observations and numerical modeling find magnetic reconnection to initiate at a localized region and then spread along a current sheet. The rate of spreading has been proposed to be controlled by a number of mechanisms based on the properties within the boundary. At the Earth's magnetopause the spreading speed is also limited by the speed at which a shocked solar wind front can move along the magnetopause boundary. The speed at which a purely north to south rotational discontinuity propagates through the magnetosheath and contacts the magnetopause is measured here using the BlockâAdaptiveâTree Solar Wind RoeâType Upwind Scheme global magnetohydrodynamics model. The propagation speed along the magnetopause is fastest near the nose of the magnetopause and decreases with distance from the subsolar point. The average propagation speed along the dayside magnetopause is 847 km/s. This is significantly larger than observed rates of reconnection spreading at the magnetopause of 30â40 km/s indicating that, for the observed conditions, the speed of front propagation along the magnetopause does not limit or control the spreading rate of reconnection.Published versio

No stratification without representation
Sortition is an alternative approach to democracy, in which representatives are not elected but randomly selected from the population. Most electoral democracies fail to accurately represent even a handful of protected groups. By contrast, sortition guarantees that every subset of the population will in expectation fill their fair share of the available positions. This fairness property remains satisfied when the sample is stratified based on known features. Moreover, stratification can greatly reduce the variance in the number of positions filled by any unknown group, as long as this group correlates with the strata. Our main result is that stratification cannot increase this variance by more than a negligible factor, even in the presence of indivisibilities and rounding. When the unknown group is unevenly spread across strata, we give a guarantee on the reduction in variance with respect to uniform sampling. We also contextualize stratification and uniform sampling in the space of fair sampling algorithms. Finally, we apply our insights to an empirical case study.Accepted manuscrip
Aggregating Dependency Graphs into Voting Agendas in Multi-Issue Elections
Many collective decision making problems have a
combinatorial structure: the agents involved must
decide on multiple issues and their preferences over
one issue may depend on the choices adopted for
some of the others. Voting is an attractive method
for making collective decisions, but conducting a
multi-issue election is challenging. On the one hand,
requiring agents to vote by expressing their preferences
over all combinations of issues is computationally
infeasible; on the other, decomposing the
problem into several elections on smaller sets of
issues can lead to paradoxical outcomes. Any pragmatic
method for running a multi-issue election will
have to balance these two concerns. We identify
and analyse the problem of generating an agenda
for a given election, specifying which issues to vote
on together in local elections and in which order to
schedule those local elections
Collision of High Frequency Plane Gravitational and Electromagnetic Waves
We study the head-on collision of linearly polarized, high frequency plane
gravitational waves and their electromagnetic counterparts in the
Einstein-Maxwell theory. The post-collision space-times are obtained by solving
the vacuum Einstein-Maxwell field equations in the geometrical optics
approximation. The head-on collisions of all possible pairs of these systems of
waves is described and the results are then generalised to non-linearly
polarized waves which exhibit the maximum two degrees of freedom of

The Phase Diagram of 1-in-3 Satisfiability Problem
We study the typical case properties of the 1-in-3 satisfiability problem,
the boolean satisfaction problem where a clause is satisfied by exactly one
literal, in an enlarged random ensemble parametrized by average connectivity
and probability of negation of a variable in a clause. Random 1-in-3
Satisfiability and Exact 3-Cover are special cases of this ensemble. We
interpolate between these cases from a region where satisfiability can be
typically decided for all connectivities in polynomial time to a region where
deciding satisfiability is hard, in some interval of connectivities. We derive
several rigorous results in the first region, and develop the
one-step--replica-symmetry-breaking cavity analysis in the second one. We
discuss the prediction for the transition between the almost surely satisfiable
and the almost surely unsatisfiable phase, and other structural properties of
the phase diagram, in light of cavity method results.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure
The quasar Q0957+561: Lensed CO emission from a disk at z~1.4?
In recent years large efforts have been made to detect molecular gas towards
high redshifted objects. Up to now the literature reports on only two cases of
CO-detection in quasars at a redshift between 1 and 2 - Q0957+561, a
gravitationally lensed system at z=1.41 (Planesas et al. 1999), and HR10 at
z=1.44 (Andreani et al. 2000). According to Planesas et al. (1999), 12CO(2-1)
emission was detected towards both the lensed images of Q0957+561 with the IRAM
Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). In contrast to the optical spectra of
the two images which support the idea that they are images of one and the same
object, the CO-spectra were surprisingly different: the southern image (named
CO-B) shows a single blueshifted line whereas a double-peaked line profile with
a blue- and a redshifted part appears towards the northern image (CO-A). Based
on the observations and on simulations with a gravitational lens program, we
are tempted to argue that the line profile traces the presence of molecular gas
of a disk in the host galaxy around the quasar. We have now new observations
with the PdBI providing the necessary sensitivity to corroborate our disk

Interviewing suspects: examining the association between skills, questioning, evidence disclosure, and interview outcomes
The interviewing of suspects is an important element in the investigation of crime. However, studies concerning actual performance of investigators when undertaking such interviews remain sparse. Nevertheless, in England and Wales, since the introduction of a prescribed framework over 20 years ago, field studies have generally shown an improvement in interviewing performance, notwithstanding ongoing concerns largely relating to the more demanding aspects (such as building/maintaining rapport, intermittent summarising and the logical development of topics). Using a sample of 70 real-life interviews, the present study examined questioning and various evidence disclosure strategies (which have also been found demanding), examining their relationships between interview skills and interview outcomes. It was found that when evidence was disclosed gradually (but revealed later), interviews were generally both more skilled and involved the gaining of comprehensive accounts, whereas when evidence was disclosed either early or very late, interviews were found to be both less skilled and less likely to involve this outcome. These findings contribute towards an increased research base for the prescribed framework
