Partitioning 3-homogeneous latin bitrades
A latin bitrade is a pair of partial latin
squares which defines the difference between two arbitrary latin squares
and
of the same order. A 3-homogeneous bitrade has
three entries in each row, three entries in each column, and each symbol
appears three times in . Cavenagh (2006) showed that any
3-homogeneous bitrade may be partitioned into three transversals. In this paper
we provide an independent proof of Cavenagh's result using geometric methods.
In doing so we provide a framework for studying bitrades as tessellations of

Moments of the Virtual Photon Structure Function
The photon structure function is a useful testing ground for QCD. It is
perturbatively computable apart from a contribution from what is usually called
the hadronic component of the photon. There have been many proposals for this
nonperturbative part of the real photon structure function. By studying moments
of the virtual photon structure function, we explore the extent to which these

A quantitative theory-versus-experiment comparison for the intense laser dissociation of H2+
A detailed theory-versus-experiment comparison is worked out for H
intense laser dissociation, based on angularly resolved photodissociation
spectra recently recorded in H.Figger's group. As opposite to other
experimental setups, it is an electric discharge (and not an optical
excitation) that prepares the molecular ion, with the advantage for the
theoretical approach, to neglect without lost of accuracy, the otherwise
important ionization-dissociation competition. Abel transformation relates the
dissociation probability starting from a single ro-vibrational state, to the
probability of observing a hydrogen atom at a given pixel of the detector
plate. Some statistics on initial ro-vibrational distributions, together with a
spatial averaging over laser focus area, lead to photofragments kinetic
spectra, with well separated peaks attributed to single vibrational levels. An
excellent theory-versus-experiment agreement is reached not only for the
kinetic spectra, but also for the angular distributions of fragments
originating from two different vibrational levels resulting into more or less
alignment. Some characteristic features can be interpreted in terms of basic
mechanisms such as bond softening or vibrational trapping.Comment: submitted to PRA on 21.05.200
Study of star formation in RCW 106 using far infrared observations
High resolution far-infrared observations of a large area of the star forming
complex RCW 106 obtained using the TIFR 1-metre balloon-borne telescope are
presented. Intensity maps have been obtained simultaneously in two bands
centred around 150 & 210 micron. Intensity maps have also been obtained at the
4 IRAS bands using HIRES processed IRAS data. From the 150 & 210 micron maps,
reliable maps of dust temperature and optical depth have been generated. The
star formation in this complex has occured in five linear subclumps. Using the
map at 210 micron, which has a spatial resolution superior to that of the IRAS
at 100 micron, 23 sources have been identified. The SED and luminosity of these
sources have been determined using the associations wit hthe IRAS maps.
Luminosity distribution of these sources has been obtained. Assuming these
embedded sources to be ZAMS stars and using the mass-luminosity relation, the
power law slope of the Initial Mass Function is found to be -1.73+-0.5. This
index for this very young complex is about the same as that for more evolved
complexes and clusters. Radiation transfer calculations in spherical geometry
have been undertaken to fit the SEDs of 13 sources with fluxes in both the TIFR
and IRAS bands. From this, the r^-2 density distribution in the envelopes is
ruled out. Finally, a correlation is seen between the luminosity of embedded

Translation to practice: a randomised controlled study of an evidenced based booklet targeted at breast care nurses in the United Kingdom
BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), it was documented that a problem of knowledge transfer existed within the speciality of breast-cancer care, thus depriving patients of receiving optimal care. Despite increasingly robust research evidence indicating recommendation of whole body exercise for people affected by breast cancer, commensurate changes to practice were not noted amongst breast-care nurses (BCNs).
AIM: To evaluate the effect of a targeted booklet, Exercise and Breast Cancer: A Booklet for Breast-Care Nurses, on changes in knowledge, reported practice, and attitudes of BCNs in the UK.
METHOD: A prospective, experimental approach was used for designing a pre- and post-test randomised controlled study. Comparisons of knowledge, reported practice, and attitudes based on responses to a questionnaire were made at two time-points in two groups of BCNs (control and experimental). The unit of randomisation and analysis was hospital clusters of BCNs. The sample comprised 92 nurses from 62 hospitals. Analysis consisted of descriptive statistics and clustered regression techniques: clustered logistic regression for knowledge items, clustered linear regression for knowledge scores, ologit for attitude and reported practice items, and clustered multiple regression for paired and multiple variable analysis.
RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in knowledge and changes in reported practice and attitudes were found. Robust variables affecting knowledge acquisition were: promotion of health, promotion of exercise, and understanding how exercise can reduce cancer-related fatigue.
DISCUSSION: The study has shown that evidence-based printed material, such as an information booklet, can be used as an effective research dissemination method when developed for needs, values, and context of a target audience.
CONCLUSIONS: This practical approach to research dissemination could be replicated and applied to other groups of nurses.</p
The Lee-Yang and P\'olya-Schur Programs. I. Linear Operators Preserving Stability
In 1952 Lee and Yang proposed the program of analyzing phase transitions in
terms of zeros of partition functions. Linear operators preserving
non-vanishing properties are essential in this program and various contexts in
complex analysis, probability theory, combinatorics, and matrix theory. We
characterize all linear operators on finite or infinite-dimensional spaces of
multivariate polynomials preserving the property of being non-vanishing
whenever the variables are in prescribed open circular domains. In particular,
this solves the higher dimensional counterpart of a long-standing
classification problem originating from classical works of Hermite, Laguerre,
