    Meaning and Impact of Board and Staff Diversity in the Philanthropic Field: Findings from a National Study

    The report's premise is that the staffs and boards of philanthropic institutions have not kept pace with the general population in terms of diversity, and that if responsiveness and diversity are linked, then foundations must attend to their internal diversity if they wish to offer a more credible outreach to diverse communities. It seeks to find answers to the following questions: What is the empirical reality that grounds these conjectures? Can we quantify the changes in foundation staffing? How well represented are different identity groups within the field, and how do members of these diverse groups fare in their career advancement? How do different types of foundations address inclusiveness, and what are examples of practices that lead to successful implementation of staff and board diversity? The report is the result of a multi-stage research project that combined surveys, interviews, and focus groups to reach more than 600 grantmakers nationwide

    New measurement of charge asymmetry xF3x{F}_3 from HERA

    After presenting the recent measurements of neutral current cross section in DIS at HERA, we explain the effect of the γZ0\gamma-Z_0 interference at the electro-weak scale, visible on these data. Then, the beam charge difference xF3x{F}_3 is measured and the interference itself is extracted.     Two-photon exchange measurements with positrons and electrons

    Two-photon exchange contributions have potentially broad ranging impact on several charged lepton scattering measurements. Previously believed to be extremely small, based in part on comparisons of positron scattering and electron scattering in the 1950s and 1960s, recent data suggest that the corrections may be larger than expected, in particular in kinematic regions that were inaccessible in these early positron scattering measurements.     Selective Laser Melting processed Ti6Al4V lattices with graded porosities for dental applications

    Dental implants need to support good osseointegration into the surrounding bone for full functionality. Interconnected porous structures have a lower stiffness and larger surface area compared with bulk structures, and therefore are likely to enable better bone-implant fixation. In addition, grading of the porosity may enable large pores for ingrowth on the periphery of an implant and a denser core to maintain mechanical properties. However, given the small diameter of dental implants it is very challenging to achieve gradations in porosity. This paper investigates the use of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) to produce a range of titanium structures with regular and graded porosity using various CAD models. This includes a novel 'Spider Web' design and lattices built on a diamond unit cell. Well-formed interconnecting porous structures were successfully developed in a one-step process. Mechanical testing indicated that the compression stiffness of the samples was within the range for cancellous bone tissue. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) indicated the designed porosities were well-replicated. The structures supported bone cell growth and deposition of bone extracellular matrix

    Long-term outcome with the automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator

    AbstractThe automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was implanted in 270 patients because of life-threatening arrhythmias over a 7 year period. There was a history of sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation, or both, in 96% of these patients, 80% had one or more prior cardiac arrests and 78% had coronary artery disease as their underlying diagnosis. The average ejection fraction was 34%, and 96% of these patients had had an average of 3.4 antiarrhythmic drug failures per patient before defibrillator implantation. There were four perioperative deaths and eight patients had generator infection or generator erosion, or both, during the perioperative period or during long-term follow-up. Concomitant antiarrhythmic drug therapy was given to 69% of patients.Shocks from the device were given to 58% of patients, and 20% received “problematic” shocks. The device was removed from 16 patients during long-term follow-up for a variety of reasons. There were 7 sudden cardiac deaths and 30 nonsudden cardiac deaths, 18 of which were secondary to congestive heart failure. The actuarial incidence of sudden death, total cardiac death and total mortality from all causes was 1%, 7% and 8%, respectively, at 1 year, and 4%, 24% and 26% at 5 years.The automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator nearly eliminates sudden death over a long-term follow-up period in a high risk group of patients. It has an acceptable rate of complications or problems, or both, and most late deaths in these patients are nonsudden and of cardiovascular origin

    This paper updates several techniques developed for the Retirement For Cause (RFC) Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Inspection System eddy current inspection module. Techniques to be discussed include: (1) Scallop Centering — development of an automatic scallop centering routine makes scallop inspections reliable.; (2) Soft Survey Mode — improvements have been made for fast peak detection.; (3) Method 2 Select Mode — a fine flaw detection technique based on the acquired waveform.; (4) Antirotation Window Inspection — a frequency select mode has been established for detecting flaws in antirotation windows.; (5) Scaling of Flaw Depth — a scaling factor has been developed, based on Phase I Reliability Test data, which converts flaw signal amplitude into estimated flaw depth

    Cytoplasmic Continuity Revisited: Closure of Septa of the Filamentous Fungus Schizophyllum commune in Response to Environmental Conditions

    Background: Mycelia of higher fungi consist of interconnected hyphae that are compartmentalized by septa. These septa contain large pores that allow streaming of cytoplasm and even organelles. The cytoplasm of such mycelia is therefore considered to be continuous. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here, we show by laser dissection that septa of Schizophyllum commune can be closed depending on the environmental conditions. The most apical septum of growing hyphae was open when this basidiomycete was grown in minimal medium with glucose as a carbon source. In contrast, the second and the third septum were closed in more than 50 % and 90 % of the cases, respectively. Interestingly, only 24 and 37 % of these septa were closed when hyphae were growing in the absence of glucose. Whether a septum was open or closed also depended on physical conditions of the environment or the presence of toxic agents. The first septum closed when hyphae were exposed to high temperature, to hypertonic conditions, or to the antibiotic nourseothricin. In the case of high temperature, septa opened again when the mycelium was placed back to the normal growth temperature. Conclusions/Significance: Taken together, it is concluded that the septal pores of S. commune are dynamic structures that open or close depending on the environmental conditions.
