Effects of Nitrogen Quenching Gas on Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping of He-3
We consider the degree of conservation of nuclear spin polarization in the
process of optical pumping under typical spin-exchange optical pumping
conditions. Previous analyses have assumed that negligible nuclear spin
precession occurs in the brief periods of time the alkali-metal atoms are in
the excited state after absorbing photons and before undergoing quenching
collisions with nitrogen molecules. We include excited-state hyperfine
interactions, electronic spin relaxation in collisions with He and N_2,
spontaneous emission, quenching collisions, and a simplified treatment of
radiation trapping
Extracting Electric Polarizabilities from Lattice QCD
Charged and neutral, pion and kaon electric polarizabilities are extracted
from lattice QCD using an ensemble of anisotropic gauge configurations with
dynamical clover fermions. We utilize classical background fields to access the
polarizabilities from two-point correlation functions. Uniform background
fields are achieved by quantizing the electric field strength with the proper
treatment of boundary flux. These external fields, however, are implemented
only in the valence quark sector. A novel method to extract charge particle

Breakdown of Angular Momentum Selection Rules in High Pressure Optical Pumping Experiments
We present measurements, using two complementary methods, of the breakdown of
atomic angular momentum selection rules in He-broadened Rb vapor. Atomic dark
states are rendered weakly absorbing due to fine-structure mixing during Rb-He
collisions. The effect substantially increases the photon demand for optical
pumping of dense vapors
Taming the Pion Cloud of the Nucleon
We present a light-front determination of the pionic contribution to the
nucleon self-energy, , to second-order in pion-baryon coupling
constants that allows the pion-nucleon vertex function to be treated in a
model-independent manner constrained by experiment. The pion mass
dependence of is consistent with chiral perturbation theory
results for small values of and is also linearly dependent on for
larger values, in accord with the results of lattice QCD calculations. The
derivative of with respect to yields the dominant
contribution to the pion content, which is consistent with the
difference observed experimentally in the violation of the

The laminariaceae off North Shapinsay, Orkney Islands; changes from 1947 to 1955
Changes in the crops of Laminariaceae over a number of years around Scotland have been investigated. This paper summarises the results of five surveys carried out in 1947, 1951, 1952, 1953 and 1955 in North Shapinsay, Orkney Islands. Considerable losses were found between 1947 and 1952, but thereafter recovery commenced and has continued. Some of the ecological factors are analysed and discussed
Zeros of Rydberg-Rydberg Foster Interactions
Rydberg states of atoms are of great current interest for quantum
manipulation of mesoscopic samples of atoms. Long-range Rydberg-Rydberg
interactions can inhibit multiple excitations of atoms under the appropriate
conditions. These interactions are strongest when resonant collisional
processes give rise to long-range C_3/R^3 interactions. We show in this paper
that even under resonant conditions C_3 often vanishes so that care is required
to realize full dipole blockade in micron-sized atom samples.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Phys.
Present Constraints on the H-dibaryon at the Physical Point from Lattice QCD
The current constraints from lattice QCD on the existence of the H-dibaryon
are discussed. With only two significant lattice QCD calculations of the
H-dibaryon binding energy at approximately the same lattice spacing, the forms
of the chiral and continuum extrapolations to the physical point are not
determined. In this brief report, we consider the constraints on the H-dibaryon
imposed by two simple chiral extrapolations. In both instances, the
extrapolation to the physical pion mass allows for a bound H-dibaryon or a
near-threshold scattering state. Further lattice QCD calculations are required
