Trans-spectral orbital angular momentum transfer via four-wave mixing in Rb vapor
We report the transfer of phase structure and, in particular, of orbital angular momentum from near-infrared pump light to blue light generated in a four-wave-mixing process in Rb-85 vapor. The intensity and phase profile of the two pump lasers at 780 and 776 nm, shaped by a spatial light modulator, influences the phase and intensity profile of light at 420 nm, which is generated in a subsequent coherent cascade. In particular, we observe that the phase profile associated with orbital angular momentum is transferred entirely from the pump light to the blue. Pumping with more complicated light profiles results in the excitation of spatial modes in the blue that depend strongly on phase matching, thus demonstrating the parametric nature of the mode transfer. These results have implications on the inscription and storage of phase information in atomic gases
Method for deducing anisotropic spin-exchange rates
Using measured spin-transfer rates from alkali atoms to He-3, combined with
spin-relaxation rates of the alkali atoms due to He-3 and He-4, it should be
possible to differentiate between isotropic and anisotropic spin-exchange. This
would give a fundamental limit on the He-3 polarization attainable in
spin-exchange optical pumping. For K-He, we find the limit to be 0.90+-0.11
Impact on maternity professionals of novel approaches to clinical audit feedback
We compared three approaches to feedback of clinical audit findings relating to miscarriage in 15 Scottish maternity services (printed report alone; report plus Action Planning Letter; report plus face-to-face Facilitated Action Planning). We surveyed clinicians to measure Theory of Planned Behaviour constructs (in the context of two audit criteria) before and after feedback (n=253) and assessed perceptions of the audit through in-depth interviews (n=17). Pre-feedback, clinicians had positive attitudes and strong subjective norms and intentions to comply, although perceived behavioural control was lower. Generally, positive attitudes, subjective norms and intentions increased after feedback but for one of the two criteria (providing a 7-day miscarriage service), perceived behavioural control decreased. No changes over time reached statistical significance and analysis of covariance (adjusting for pre-feedback scores) showed no consistent relationships between method of feedback and post-feedback construct scores. Interviews revealed positive perceptions of audit but frustration at lack of capacity to implement changes. While interventions which increased intensity of feedback proved feasible and acceptable to clinicians, we were unable to demonstrate that they increased intention to comply with audit criteria.This study was funded by NHS Quality Improvement Scotland
The Population Biology and Transmission Dynamics of Loa loa
Endemic to Central Africa, loiasis – or African eye worm (caused by the filarial nematode Loa loa) – affects more than 10 million people. Despite causing ocular and systemic symptoms, it has typically been considered a benign condition, only of public health relevance because it impedes mass drug administration-based interventions against onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis in co-endemic areas. Recent research has challenged this conception, demonstrating excess mortality associated with high levels of infection, implying that loiasis warrants attention as an intrinsic public health problem. This review summarises available information on the key parasitological, entomological, and epidemiological characteristics of the infection and argues for the mobilisation of resources to control the disease, and the development of a mathematical transmission model to guide deployment of interventions
In-plane structure and ordering at liquid sodium surfaces and interfaces from ab initio molecular dynamics
Atoms at liquid metal surfaces are known to form layers parallel to the
surface. We analyze the two-dimensional arrangement of atoms within such layers
at the surface of liquid sodium, using ab initio molecular dynamics (MD)
simulations based on density functional theory. Nearest neighbor distributions
at the surface indicate mostly 5-fold coordination, though there are noticeable
fractions of 4-fold and 6-fold coordinated atoms. Bond angle distributions
suggest a movement toward the angles corresponding to a six-fold coordinated
hexagonal arrangement of the atoms as the temperature is decreased towards the
solidification point. We rationalize these results with a distorted hexagonal
order at the surface, showing a mixture of regions of five and six-fold
coordination. The liquid surface results are compared with classical MD
simulations of the liquid surface, with similar effects appearing, and with ab
initio MD simulations for a model solid-liquid interface, where a pronounced
shift towards hexagonal ordering is observed as the temperature is lowered
