    Minimization by Incremental Stochastic Surrogate Optimization for Large Scale Nonconvex Problems

    International audienceMany constrained, nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization problems can be tackled using the Majorization-Minimization (MM) method which alternates between constructing a surrogate function which upper bounds the objective function, and then minimizing this surrogate. For problems which minimize a finite sum of functions, a stochastic version of the MM method selects a batch of functions at random at each iteration and optimizes the accumulated surrogate. However, in many cases of interest such as variational inference for latent variable models, the surrogate functions are expressed as an expectation. In this contribution, we propose a doubly stochastic MM method based on Monte Carlo approximation of these stochastic surrogates. We establish asymptotic and non-asymptotic convergence of our scheme in a constrained, nonconvex, nonsmooth optimization setting. We apply our new framework for inference of logistic regression model with missing data and for variational inference of Bayesian variants of LeNet-5 and Resnet-18 on benchmark datasets

    Extramammary Paget's Disease: 20 Years of Experience in Chinese Population

    Background. To examine the results of treatment of Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) in ethnic Chinese. Method. Between 1990 and 2010, patients treated for EMPD were reviewed. Data were analyzed retrospectively. Results. Forty-eight patients were treated by surgical resection. Local recurrence rate was 14.6%. The postresection defects were repaired by primary closure (8.3%), partial thickness skin graft (72.9%), or local/regional flaps (18.8%). Dermal invasion was found in 9 patients (18.8%). Seven patients (14.6%) developed regional lymph node metastasis (concurrent with surgery, n = 1; subsequent to surgery, n = 6), and 3 patients (6.3%) had systemic metastasis after surgery. The presence of dermal invasion was associated with significantly higher incidence of regional lymph nodes and systemic metastasis. The incidence of associated internal malignancy was 8.3%. Conclusion. The mainstay of treatment for EMPD is surgery. Pathological dermal invasion increases the chance of regional lymph node as well as systemic metastasis. The association with internal malignancy warrants preoperative endoscopic examination in all patients

    Brief advice and active referral for smoking cessation services among community smokers: a study protocol for randomized controlled trial

    Abstract Background Most smokers do not use smoking cessation (SC) services although it increases successful quits. Passive referral providing SC information to smokers is commonly used in SC studies. Little was known about active referral in the community setting. This study aims to motivate community smokers to quit by brief SC advice using a validated AWARD model (Ask, Warn, Advise, Refer and Do-it-again) that adjunct with active referral of smokers to various SC services in Hong Kong. Methods/Design This is a single-blinded, parallel three-armed cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two treatment groups of (1) brief SC advice using the AWARD model, active referral to SC services plus a referral card and a health warning leaflet (active referral group) and (2) brief SC advice using AWARD model and health warning leaflet (brief advice group) and a control group receives general very brief advice with a self-help booklet. A total of 1291 smokers will be recruited from 66 clusters (recruitment sessions) with 22 will be allocated to each of the two intervention and one control groups. SC ambassadors will be trained for delivering the interventions and conducting telephone follow-up. The primary outcomes are self-reported 7-days point prevalence (PP) abstinence at 3 and 6 months follow-up. Intention-to-treat principle and multi-level regressions will be used for data analysis. Discussion This is the first RCT on assessing a model combining brief advice and active referral to SC services among community smokers. The results will inform the practices of SC services and intervention studies. Trial registration NCT02539875 (ClinicalTrials.gov registry; registered retrospectively on 22 July 2015

    Demonstration of intermodal four-wave mixing by femtosecond pulses centered at 1550 nm in an air-silica photonic crystal fiber

    In this paper, we demonstrated experimentally the intermodal four-wave mixing effect by launching femtosecond pulses centered at 1550 nm into deeply normal dispersion region in the fundamental guided-mode of an air-silica photonic crystal fiber with two zero dispersion wavelengths. When intermodal phase-matching condition is satisfied, the energy of the pump waves at 1550 nm in the fundamental guided-mode is converted to the anti-Stokes waves around 1258 nm and Stokes waves around 2018 nm both in the second-order guided-mode. When femtosecond pulses at input average power Pav of 90 mW are propagated inside 22 cm long photonic crystal fiber, the conversion efficiencies ηas and ηs of the anti-Stokes and Stokes waves generated are 8.5 and 6.8%, respectively. We also observed that the influences of the fiber bending and walk-off effect between the fundamental and second-order guided-modes on intermodal four-wave mixing-based frequency conversion process are very small

    High Degree Picosecond Pulse Compression in Chalcogenide-Silicon Slot Waveguide Taper

    In this paper, we propose and design a chalcogenide (As2S3)-based slot waveguide taper with exponentially decreasing dispersion profile to realize high-degree pulse compression of low-power chirped solitons. Based on the waveguide taper designed, pulse compression of fundamental solitons, and chirped 2-soliton breather are both investigated numerically. With self-similar pulse compression scheme, a 1 ps input pulse is compressed to 81.5 fs in 6 cm propagation. By using 2-soliton breather pulses, a 1 ps chirped pulse is compressed to 80.3 fs in just 2.54 cm. This is the first demonstration of the feasibility of high-degree nonlinear pulse compression in As2S3-based slot waveguide taper

Oligodontia, a severe form of tooth agenesis, is genetically and phenotypically a heterogeneous condition. Although significant efforts have been made, the genetic etiology of dental agenesis remains largely unknown. In the present study, we performed whole-exome sequencing to identify the causative mutations in Chinese families in whom oligodontia segregates with dominant inheritance. We detected a heterozygous missense mutation (c.632G>A [p.Arg211Gln]) in WNT10B in all affected family members. By Sanger sequencing a cohort of 145 unrelated individuals with non-syndromic oligodontia, we identified three additional mutations (c.569C>G [p.Pro190Arg], c.786G>A [p.Trp262∗], and c.851T>G [p.Phe284Cys]). Interestingly, analysis of genotype-phenotype correlations revealed that mutations in WNT10B affect the development of permanent dentition, particularly the lateral incisors. Furthermore, a functional assay demonstrated that each of these mutants could not normally enhance the canonical Wnt signaling in HEPG2 epithelial cells, in which activity of the TOPFlash luciferase reporter was measured. Notably, these mutant WNT10B ligands could not efficiently induce endothelial differentiation of dental pulp stem cells. Our findings provide the identification of autosomal-dominant WNT10B mutations in individuals with oligodontia, which increases the spectrum of congenital tooth agenesis and suggests attenuated Wnt signaling in endothelial differentiation of dental pulp stem cells
