    Virtually all of the systems are bound to failure upon usage for certain duration, and these systems can be categorized as repairable and non-repairable system. Repairable system is one, which can be restored to get back to work fully by any action such as parts replacements or changes to adjustable settings other than replacement of the entire system. While non-repairable system is one, which cannot or not cost effective to be repaired, such as the microprocessor, light bulb. In this project, research on the reliability of repairable system was focused, as most of the machines/systems in the industry field are complex and made from several to millions of parts. The main objective of this project is to analyze the failure data of centrifugal pumps that were provided by a petrochemical plant and to develop a reliability model to predict the failure occurrences for each failure modes. With accurate failure prediction, the plant will be able to schedule preventive maintenance accurately and thus avoiding the costly corrective maintenance. Failure data of centrifugal pumps was collected and segregation was done to narrow the scope of study. Weibull parameters, cumulative number of failures, MTBF, etc for each failure were analyzed by using Weibull++ 7, while the reliability of the pumpsystem was modeled by analytical analyses and simulations using BlockSim 7. The centrifugal pumps from the plant are predicted to have an average MTBF of 2.81 years. In conclusion, accurate failure prediction on centrifugal pump is critical so that appropriate actions can be taken to utilize the components folly and most importantly,minimized the chance ofbreak down ofthe pump

    School Debit Transaction Using Fingerprint Recognition System

    This paper proposed a fingerprint based school debit transaction system using minutiae matching biometric technology. This biometric cashless transaction system intensely shortens the luncheon line traffic and labour force compared to conventional cash payment system. Furthermore, contrast with card cashless transaction system, fingerprint cashless transaction system with benefit that user need not carry additional identification object and remember lengthy password. The implementation of this cashless transaction system provides a more organize, reliable and efficient way to operate the school debit transaction system.

    Fuzzy Logic Based Perceptual Image Hashing Algorithm in Malaysian Banknotes Detection System for the Visually Impaired

    Visually impaired persons have difficulty in business that dealing with banknote. This paper proposed a Malaysian banknotes detection system using image processing technology and fuzzy logic algorithm for the visually impaired. The Malaysian banknote reader will first capture the inserted banknote image, sending it to the cloud server for image processing via Wi-Fi medium. The cloud server is established to receive the banknote image sending from the banknote reader, processing them using perceptual hashing based image searching and fuzzy logic algorithm, then return the detected banknote’s value results back to the banknote reader. The banknote reader will display the results in terms of voice message played on the mini speaker attached on it, to allow visually impaired persons knowing the banknote’s value. This hardware mechanism reduces the size and costs for the banknote reader carried by the visually impaired persons. Experimental results showed that this Malaysian banknotes detection system reached an accuracy beyond 95% by running test on 600 different worn, torn and new Malaysian banknotes. After the banknote image being taken by the banknote reader’s camera, the system able to detect the banknote value in about 480 mili-seconds to 560 mili-seconds for a single sided banknote recognition. The banknotes detection speed was also comparable with human observers reading banknotes, with the response of 1.0908 second per banknote slight difference reading time. The IoT and image processing concepts were successfully blended and it provides an alternative to aid the visually impaired person their daily business transaction activities in a better way

    Patent applications for using DNA technologies to authenticate medicinal herbal material

    Herbal medicines are used in many countries for maintaining health and treating diseases. Their efficacy depends on the use of the correct materials, and life-threatening poisoning may occur if toxic adulterants or substitutes are administered instead. Identification of a medicinal material at the DNA level provides an objective and powerful tool for quality control. Extraction of high-quality DNA is the first crucial step in DNA authentication, followed by a battery of DNA techniques including whole genome fingerprinting, DNA sequencing and DNA microarray to establish the identity of the material. New or improved technologies have been developed and valuable data have been collected and compiled for DNA authentication. Some of these technologies and data are patentable. This article provides an overview of some recent patents that cover the extraction of DNA from medicinal materials, the amplification of DNA using improved reaction conditions, the generation of DNA sequences and fingerprints, and the development of high-throughput authentication methods.     在香港,也斯被評為可能是最早譯介當代拉丁美洲小說的譯者,也可能是最早發表帶魔幻色彩的小說的作者。〈養龍人師門〉帶有濃厚的魔幻寫實主義的色彩,業界自然不乏以魔幻寫實主義分析也斯作品,然而似乎只把魔幻寫實視為創作技法,片面理解魔幻寫實主義,忽略其背後的精神。本文嘗試結合學者研究魔幻寫實主義的成果,旁借也斯訪談錄,分析也斯在〈養龍人師門〉如何用魔幻寫實主義重寫神話。本文核心主要是環繞以下兩個問題: 1. 也斯為養龍神話加入/重寫了不少情節和細節,這些故事新質有何意義? 2. 也斯如何以魔幻手法處理重寫,並體驗了怎樣的魔幻寫實主義的特色? 為行文方便,本文將「受魔幻寫實主義影響」、「經過魔幻寫實主義的手 法處理」縮寫成「魔幻化」

    Application of tri-colour, dual fusion fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) system for the characterization of BCR-ABL1 fusion in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) and residual disease monitoring

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We studied the application of the <it>BCR-ABL1 </it>+ 9q34 tri-colour dual fusion fluorescence <it>in situ </it>hybridization (FISH) system in the characterization of fusion signal pattern and the monitoring of residual disease in chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML). The signal constellation on metaphases with the tri-colour dual fusion system was defined. The knowledge of various signal patterns obtained from the different genetic rearrangements was further applied to the analysis of hybridization signals on interphase nuclei.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p><it>BCR-ABL1 </it>dual colour, dual fusion FISH (D-FISH) was performed on diagnostic samples of 22 CML patients. The tri-colour FISH system was performed on cases that showed aberrant signal patterns other than the classical 1 green (G) 1 orange (O) 2 fusions (F). Using the aqua band-pass filter, random signal overlap in interphase nuclei would be indicated by the presence of an aqua signal (<it>ASS1</it>), while genuine fusion was represented by the absence of the <it>ASS1 </it>signal.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using the D-FISH system, the signal patterns could be categorized into 4 groups: group 1 (n = 17) showed the classical 1G1O2F; group 2 (n = 2) showed 2G1O1F indicating <it>ABL1 </it>deletion; group 3 (n = 1) showed 1G2O1F indicating <it>BCR </it>deletion; group 4 (n = 2) with 1G1O1F indicating reciprocal <it>ABL1-BCR </it>deletion. The tri-colour dual fusion system correlated with the D-FISH system for cases with der(9) deletion. The added aqua-labelled <it>ASS1 </it>probe was useful in differentiating random signal overlap from genuine <it>BCR-ABL1 </it>fusion in the interphase cells (group 4).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although the D-FISH probe was valuable in establishing the different patterns of aberrant signals and monitoring patients with the classic 2-fusion signals in CML, the tri-colour dual fusion probe should be used for patients with der(9) deletion to monitor response to treatment.</p

    Fuzzy Logic Weighted Averaging Algorithm for Malaysian Banknotes Reader Featuring Counterfeit Detection

    This paper proposed a novel fuzzy logic weighted averaging (FLWA) algorithm in image processing techniques to detect counterfeit Malaysian banknotes. Image acquisition techniques on banknote position detection and re-adjustment, image pre-processing techniques, feature extraction methods on Malaysian banknotes’ watermarks are also covered in the paper. The FLWA Algorithm has the advantage of a much simpler model since it is a human guidance learning algorithm that does not require enrolment process to get the specific weights for each security feature. Each security feature is treated with equal weight. The experimental results also shown that FLWA model also outperform the MobileNet model and VGG16 model in Malaysian banknotes’ counterfeit detection. It has a distinct advantage over earlier or current banknote counterfeit detection techniques in that it adopted the known watermarks features, with known machine learning techniques to identify real Malaysian banknotes and detect those counterfeit Malaysian banknotes
