Spreading the message: teaching music librarianship by distance learning
A course in music librarianship has been offered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for many years. However, it is only since 2008 that the course has been offered online. The move from a traditional classroom environment to an online one raises several pedagogical and practical
issues, some of which are discussed in the present article. The technology used to deliver courses online from the University of Illinois is also examined, and some information is also provided about
the use of online course management software to deliver music librarianship courses at the University of Aberystwyth (UK). An increase in the number of courses offered online in this way will, one hopes, lead to greater course enrolment by students.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe
Forensic hypnosis
Hypnosis has long generated controversy as a recall enhancement method. Concerns about hypnosis are warranted by findings of a tradeoff between the number of memories recalled and memory accuracy. Moreover, witnesses often express confidence in hypnotically augmented remembrances, regardless of their accuracy, increasing the risk jurors will be biased based on convincing yet inaccurate information. Although misleading questions appear to be equally or more problematic, raising concerns about singling out hypnosis as a uniquely prejudicial technique, other recall improvement methods (e.g., cognitive interview and asking individuals to do their best to recall target events) appear to pose less memory risks than hypnotic procedures
Complete intersection dimensions and Foxby classes
Let be a local ring and a finitely generated -module. The complete
intersection dimension of --defined by Avramov, Gasharov and Peeva, and
denoted \cidim_R(M)--is a homological invariant whose finiteness implies that
is similar to a module over a complete intersection. It is related to the
classical projective dimension and to Auslander and Bridger's Gorenstein
dimension by the inequalities \gdim_R(N)\leq\cidim_R(N)\leq\pd_R(N).
Using Blanco and Majadas' version of complete intersection dimension for
local ring homomorphisms, we prove the following generalization of a theorem of
Avramov and Foxby: Given local ring homomorphisms and
such that has finite Gorenstein dimension, if
has finite complete intersection dimension, then the composition
has finite Gorenstein dimension. This follows from our result
stating that, if has finite complete intersection dimension, then is
-reflexive and is in the Auslander class \catac(R) for each semidualizing
-complex .Comment: minor revisions, final version to appear in JPAA, 24 pages, uses
