Ferroelectric Phase Transitions from First Principles

    Get PDF
An effective Hamiltonian for the ferroelectric transition in PbTiO3PbTiO_3 is constructed from first-principles density-functional-theory total-energy and linear-response calculations through the use of a localized, symmetrized basis set of ``lattice Wannier functions.'' Preliminary results of Monte Carlo simulations for this system show a first-order cubic-tetragonal transition at 660 K. The involvement of the Pb atom in the lattice instability and the coupling of local distortions to strain are found to be particularly important in producing the behavior characteristic of the PbTiO3PbTiO_3 transition. A tentative explanation for the presence of local distortions experimentally observed above TcT_c is suggested. Further applications of this method to a variety of systems and structures are proposed for first-principles study of finite-temperature structural properties in individual materials.Comment: 14 pages, harvmac, 4 uuencoded figure

A first principles study of wurtzite-structure MnO

    Get PDF
We present results of a density functional theory study of MnO in the wurtzite structure. Our motivation is provided by recent experiments reporting ferromagnetism in Mn-doped wurtzite structure ZnO. We find that wurtzite MnO a) is not strongly energetically disfavored as compared with the ground state rocksalt MnO, b) shows strong magnetostructural coupling and c) has a piezoelectric response that is larger than that of ZnO. These predictions augur well for the creation of ferromagnetic piezoelectric semiconductor based on Mn-doped ZnO

Mobile Agent based Market Basket Analysis on Cloud

This paper describes the design and development of a location-based mobile shopping application for bakery product shops. Whole application is deployed on cloud. The three-tier architecture consists of, front-end, middle-ware and back-end. The front-end level is a location-based mobile shopping application for android mobile devices, for purchasing bakery products of nearby places. Front-end level also displays association among the purchased products. The middle-ware level provides a web service to generate JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) output from the relational database. It exchanges information and data between mobile application and servers in cloud. The back-end level provides the Apache Tomcat Web server and MySQL database. The application also uses the Google Cloud Messaging for generating and sending notification of orders to shopkeeper.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

Effect of Neem Oil on Sperm Mitochondrial Activity

    Get PDF
It is a known fact that neem oil has some effect on motility of sperm. Motility of sperm depends on mitochondrial activity present in mid-piece of sperm. In the present study, the mitochondrial activity of sperm was evaluated after treating semen with the different quantities of neem oil. The mitochondrial activity was also evaluated after subjecting the semen samples for different incubation periods keeping the quantity of semen as well as that of neem oil same. Tests were done on thirty normozoospermic semen samples with motile score more than 75%. It was found that as the quantity of neem oil increases, the mitochondrial activity decreases significantly (P < 0.001). Similar results were found, when same quantity of neem oil was treated with same quantity of semen, but incubating for different time durations. The mitochondrial activity decreases significantly (P < 0.001) from one minute to twenty minutes. So, it indicates that as the contact period between neem oil and semen increases the mitochondrial activity decreases significantl
