    High-spin study of rotational structures in 72Br

    High-spin states in 3572Br37 were studied using the 40Ca(36Ar, 3pn) reaction. The existing level scheme has been significantly modified and extended. Evidence has been found for a spin reassignment of -1ℏh to the previously observed negative-parity band, which carries implications for the interpretation of a signature inversion in this structure. One signature of the previously assigned positive-parity band is interpreted as negative parity and has been extended to I π=(22-) and its signature partner has been observed up to Iπ = (19-) for the first time. The remaining positive-parity band has been extended to Iπ=(29+). A sequence of states observed to Iπ=(22+) may be the signature partner of this structure. Configurations have been assigned to each of these three structures through comparisons to cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations

    Terminating states in the positive-parity structures of As 67

    The energy levels and γ-ray decay scheme of the positive-parity states in the Tz=12 nucleus As67 have been studied by using the Ca40(Ar36,2αp)As67 reaction at a beam energy of 145 MeV. Two new band structures have been identified which can be connected to the previously known levels. The results for these bands are compared with configuration-dependent cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The good level of agreement between theory and experiment suggests that these structures can be interpreted in terms of configurations that involve three g92 particles and that both possess noncollective terminating states

    Yrast and near-yrast excitations up to high spin in 10048Cd52

    The gamma decay of excited states in the nucleus 100Cd, which is two proton holes and two neutrons away from doubly magic (N=Z=50) 100Sn, has been studied with the Gammasphere array following the 46Ti(58Ni,2p2n) reaction at 215 MeV. Residues were identified by detection of evaporated charged particles in the Microball CsI array, by neutron detection in a set of liquid scintillator detectors, and by a tag on the delayed gamma-ray decay of the known 8+ isomeric state. The level scheme has been extended up to 20ℏ in angular momentum and to nearly 10 MeV in excitation energy. The results are compared with shell-model calculations

    Dynamics of tree diversity in undisturbed and logged subtropical rainforest in Australia

    In subtropical rainforest in eastern Australia, changes in the diversity of trees were compared under natural conditions and eight silvicultural regimes over 35 years. In the treated plots basal area remaining after logging ranged from 12 to 58 m2 per ha. In three control plots richness differed little over this period. In the eight treated plots richness per plot generally declined after intervention and then gradually increased to greater than original diversity. After logging there was a reduction in richness per plot and an increase in species richness per stem in all but the lightest selective treatments. The change in species diversity was related to the intensity of the logging, however the time taken for species richness to return to pre-logging levels was similar in all silvicultural treatments and was not effected by the intensity of treatment. These results suggest that light selective logging in these forests mainly affects dominant species. The return to high diversity after only a short time under all silvicultural regimes suggests that sustainability and the manipulation of species composition for desired management outcomes is possible

    Testing mean-field models near the N=Z line: γ-ray spectroscopy of the Tz=1/2 nucleus 73Kr

    Excited states in the N=Z+1 nucleus 73Kr have been investigated using the 40Ca(36Ar, 2pn) and 40Ca(40Ca, α2pn) reactions at 145 and 160 MeV, respectively. γ rays were detected using the Gammasphere array and events were recorded in coincidence with charged-particle and neutron detectors. The three previously observed bands were extended to high spin, and a new unfavored positive-parity band has been observed. The alignment characteristics and decay properties of the bands are all consistent with large-deformation prolate rotation, with no clear evidence for oblate bands or shape coexistence. This is quite different from neighboring 72,74Kr, indicating a strong shape-stabilizing role for the valence neutron. The experimental results are compared to extended total Routhian surface, cranked Nilsson Strutinsky, and cranked relativistic mean-field calculations. The results suggest that the paired calculations lack some important physics. Neutron-proton correlations may be the missing ingredient. There is also evidence for an unusual band crossing in the negative-parity bands, which may indicate the presence of T=0 pairing correlations. At high spin all the models can reproduce the experimental data

    Grafting veins into the arterial circulation causes endothelial damage and neointimal hyperplasia. However, the remodelling of vein grafts and the contribution of the endothelium is not well understood. Since nitric oxide (NO) has a crucial role in vascular function, we investigated the importance of NO synthases (NOSs) in vein graft re-endothelialization and remodelling in this study. Mouse isogenic vena cava was grafted into the carotid artery. Progressive remodelling of the grafted veins was evidenced by re-endothelialization at 2 weeks and subsequent appearance of vasomotor function at 4 weeks. Pharmacological inhibition of inducible NOS (iNOS) with the specific inhibitor 1400W, administered between 2 and 4 weeks after grafting, when re-endothelialization was complete, resulted in neoadventitial inflammation, neoadventitial thickening and impaired functional remodelling. Completion of re-endothelialization is pivotal in vein graft remodelling in the mouse and is associated with a series of changes in inflammation, proliferation and initiation of vascular functional remodelling. After re-endothelial-ization, iNOS pregulation may be an important mechanism to prevent secondary neoadventitial inflammation and preserve ongoing functional remodelling. iNOS activity could therefore be beneficial for long-term patency of the vein graft
