User-centric adaptation of structured Web documents for small devices
Content adaptation is a crucial step in making desktop-oriented web resources available to mobile, small device users. In this paper, we propose a decision engine comprising a content analysis module and a negotiation module to serve as the core of a content adaptation architecture. The content analysis module parses a structured web document originally intended for the desktop into small sections and transforms the document into a form that is best suited for rendering in a constrained mobile device. The transformation also provides the user with the best content value in an adapted web page while preserving content integrity. With the transformed document, the negotiation module selects the best rendering parameters to be used in the synthesis of an optimal adapted version of the content. The decisions made are based on the user's preference and QoS considerations. We have built a prototype to demonstrate the viability of our approach. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
User-Centric Content Negotiation for Effective Adaptation Service in Mobile Computing
We address the challenges of building a good content adaptation service for mobile devices and propose a decision engine that is user-centric with QoS awareness, which can automatically negotiate for the appropriate adaptation decision to use in the synthesis of an optimal adapted version. The QoS-sensitive approach complements the lossy nature of the transcoding operations. The decision engine will look for the best trade off among various parameters in order to reduce the loss of quality in various domains. Quantitative methods are suggested to measure the QoS of the content versions in various quality domains. Based on the particular user perception and other contextual information on the client capability, the network connection, and the requested content, the proposed negotiation algorithm will determine a content version with a good aggregate score. The control of search and rescue robots with the general suppression control framework
The paper described the use of the general suppression control framework (GSCF) for the control and coordination of a team of search and rescue robots undertaking exploration operation. This study adopts the biological analogy of the human immune system to derive the GSCF having the behavior of immunological cells. The framework directs the coordination of these robots in tackling search and rescue operations in an unstructured environment. A new Kalman filter-based power spectral density estimation for nonstationary pressure signals
IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, Island of Kos, Greece, 21-24 May 2006This paper presents a new Kalman filter-based power spectral density estimation (PSD) algorithm for nonstationary pressure signals. The pressure signal is assumed to be an autoregressive (AR) process, and a stochastically perturbed difference equation constraint model is used to describe the dynamics of the AR coefficients. The proposed Kalman filter frame uses variable number of measurements to estimate the time-varying AR coefficients and yield the PSD estimation with better time-frequency resolution. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a better time-frequency resolution than conventional algorithms for nonstationary pressure signals. © 2006 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Approximate QR-based algorithms for recursive nonlinear least squares estiamtion
This paper proposes new approximate QR-based algorithms for recursive nonlinear least squares (NLS) estimation. Two QR decomposition-based recursive algorithms are introduced based on the classical Gauss-Newton (GN) and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithms in nonlinear unconstrained optimization or least squares problems. Instead of using the matrix inversion formula, recursive QR decomposition is employed, which is known to be numerically more stable in finite wordlength implementation. A family of p-A-QR-LS algorithms is then proposed to solve the LS problem resulting from the linearization of the NLS problem. It achieves different complexity-performance tradeoffs by retaining different number of diagonal plus off-diagonals (denoted by an integer p) of the triangular factor of the augmented data matrix. Simulation results on identifying a nonlinear perceptron are provided to illustrate the principle of the new algorithms. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
Psychometric properties of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale in a Hong Kong Chinese community sample
This study evaluated the psychometric properties of a widely used self-report anxiety scale-the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS) and the associated parent-report version (PSCAS)-in a Hong Kong Chinese community sample. While good psychometric properties of SCAS and PSCAS had been documented in Western cultural contexts (e.g., Australia), no systematic psychometric evaluation of the Chinese-translated SCAS and PSCAS has been published. In this study, psychometric properties of SCAS and PSCAS were examined with respect to four criteria: (a) factor structure, (b) descriptive statistics, (c) convergent validity with an anxiety cognition measure, and (d) internal consistency. Psychometric properties of SCAS and PSCAS for a Chinese community sample were found to be highly comparable with those published on Australian samples, thus providing a solid conceptual foundation for use of the Chinese version of SCAS and PSCAS. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.postprin
Effectiveness of group cognitive-behavioral treatment for childhood anxiety in community clinics
This study evaluated the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatment for childhood anxiety in a community clinic setting in Hong Kong, China. Forty-five clinically-referred children (age 6-11 years) were randomly assigned to either a cognitive-behavioral treatment program or a waitlist-control condition. Children in the treatment condition showed significant reduction in anxiety symptoms-both statistically and clinically-whereas children in the waitlist condition did not. After the waitlist period was over, the control group also received the treatment program and showed a similar reduction in symptoms. For the full sample of 45 children, the effectiveness of the intervention was significant immediately after treatment and in 3- and 6-month follow-ups. In addition, children's anxiety cognition and their ability to cope with anxiety-provoking situations fully mediated the treatment gains. These results offer empirical support for cognitive-behavioral treatment programs in a non-Western cultural context and plausible mediators for how cognitive-behavioral therapy works. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.postprin
