Kepler super-flare stars: what are they?

The Kepler mission has led to the serendipitous discovery of a significant number of `super flares' - white light flares with energies between 10^33 erg and 10^36 erg - on solar-type stars. It has been speculated that these could be `freak' events that might happen on the Sun, too. We have started a programme to study the nature of the stars on which these super flares have been observed. Here we present high-resolution spectroscopy of 11 of these stars and discuss our results. We find that several of these stars are very young, fast-rotating stars where high levels of stellar activity can be expected, but for some other stars we do not find a straightforward explanation for the occurrence of super flares.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 9 pages, 4 figure

Combining Spatial and Temporal Logics: Expressiveness vs. Complexity

In this paper, we construct and investigate a hierarchy of spatio-temporal formalisms that result from various combinations of propositional spatial and temporal logics such as the propositional temporal logic PTL, the spatial logics RCC-8, BRCC-8, S4u and their fragments. The obtained results give a clear picture of the trade-off between expressiveness and computational realisability within the hierarchy. We demonstrate how different combining principles as well as spatial and temporal primitives can produce NP-, PSPACE-, EXPSPACE-, 2EXPSPACE-complete, and even undecidable spatio-temporal logics out of components that are at most NP- or PSPACE-complete

Immunohistochemical characterization of the 'intimal proliferation' phenomenon in Sneddon's syndrome and essential thrombocythaemia

Cellular changes were immunocytochemically characterized in skin vessels of five patients with idiopathic generalized racemose livedo (Sneddon's syndrome), and one patient with localized racemose livedo associated with essential thrombocythaemia. Antibodies against alpha-smooth muscle-actin, tropomyosin, desmin, vimentin, factor VIII-related antigen, human endothelial cells (CD31), human macrophages (CD68), and HLA-DR positive cells (CR3/43) were used. Conventional light microscopy showed, in all cases, intimal thickening of ascending arteries and arterioles as a result of an accumulation of cells and extracellular hyalinized material. None of the specimens showed infiltration with polymorphonuclear leucocytes or macrophages. The cells in the region of the intimal hyperplasia showed intense positive immunostaining for alpha-smooth muscle actin and tropomyosin. Staining for the intermediate filament desmin was localized to the resident smooth muscle cells of the media, whereas staining for vimentin was found in all types of cells in both the intima and media. Positive immunostaining for factor VIII-related antigen and CD31 was strictly confined to the endothelial cells lining the narrowed lumina of the vessels. No positive staining with either antibody was observed in totally occluded vessels. Cells in the subintimal space did not show reactivity for CD68 in any of the specimens, but two cases showed solitary cells with positive staining for HLA-DR in this region. There were no differences in staining pattern between Sneddon's syndrome and essential thrombocythaemia with any of the antibodies. Our results support the assumption that the 'intimal proliferation' in both diseases is caused by colonization of the subendothelial space with contractile cells of possible smooth muscle origin.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS

FAST TRIMARAN PASSENGER SHIPS FOR THE ARCHIPELAGO REGIONS

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the design process of passenger trimaran ships provided to be operated in the archipelago regions. This specific ship and area are defined due to the need of transport passenger in the archipelago region. The problems of worse sea conditions, low passenger rate, safety, the need of fast passenger transport are solved with the existence of fast passenger trimaran. Several tasks were executed with the objective is to find design specification of the trimaran ships. The ships were designed based on the standart procedure in ship design. The input design, design process, design considerations and other requirements and rules were applied during design process. Two small trimaran multi-function were designed and built to be operated as fishing boat and restricted passenger transport. Meanwhile, two passenger trimarans were designed with the concepts of “wave piercing trimaran†and Small Waterplane Area-Wider Deck (SWA-WD) for the main hull form. The results of the task were proving the blue-print design. In, addition, one task is still condicting for design of Patrol Trimaran Boat. The results of those designs are presented in the paper including the design specifications and documents for each kind of trimaran ships. In conclusion, the design specifications are prepared for future ship construction. It is recommded that some ship design parameters should be confirmed before the construction stage.     &nbsp

Emission Line AGNs from the REX survey: Results from optical spectroscopy

    Get PDF
We present 71 Emission Line objects selected from the REX survey. Except for 3 of them, for which the presence of an active nucleus is dubious, all these sources are Active Galactic Nuclei (QSOs, Seyfert galaxies, emission line radiogalaxies). In addition, we present the spectra of other 19 AGNs included in a preliminary version of the REX catalog but not in the final one. The majority (80) of the 90 sources presented in this paper is newly discovered. Finally, we present the general properties in the radio and in the X-ray band of all the AGNs discovered so far in the REX survey.Comment: 27 pages. The REX survey: a search for Radio Emitting X-ray sources

    Get PDF
We present the scientific goals, the strategy and the first results of the REX project, an effort aimed at creating a sizable and statistically complete sample of Radio Emitting X-ray sources (REX) using the available data from a VLA survey and the ROSAT PSPC archive. Through a positional cross-correlation of the two data sets we have derived a sample of about 1600 REX. Among the 393 REX identified so far a high fraction is represented by AGNs, typically radio loud QSOs and BL Lacs. The remaining sources are galaxies, typically radio galaxies isolated or in cluster. Thanks to the low flux limits in the radio and in the X-ray band and the large area of sky covered by the survey, we intend to derive a new complete and unbiased sample of BL Lacs which will contain both ``RBL'' and ``XBL'' type objects. In this way, the apparent dichotomy resulting from the current samples of BL Lacs will be directly analyzed in a unique sample. Moreover, the high number of BL Lacs expected in the REX sample (about 200) will allow an accurate estimate of their statistical properties. To date, we have discovered 15 new BL Lacs and 11 BL Lac candidates with optical properties intermediate between those of a typical elliptical galaxy and those of a typical BL Lac object. These objects could harbour weak sources of non-thermal continuum in their nuclei and, if confirmed, they could represent the faint tail of the BL Lac population. The existence of such ``weak'' BL Lacs is matter of discussion in recent literature and could lead to a re-assessment of the defining criteria of a BL Lac and, consequently, to a revision of their cosmological and statistical properties.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication to Ap

Spectral observations of X Persei: Connection between H-alpha and X-ray emission

We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period 1999 - 2018. Using new and published data, we found that during "disc-rise" the expansion velocity of the circumstellar disc is 0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Our results suggest that the disc radius in recent decades show evidence of resonant truncation of the disc by resonances 10:1, 3:1, and 2:1, while the maximum disc size is larger than the Roche lobe of the primary and smaller than the closest approach of the neutron star. We find correlation between equivalent width of H-alpha emission line (WαW\alpha) and the X-ray flux, which is visible when 15 A˚ <Wα≤40 A˚15 \: \AA \: < W\alpha \le 40 \: \AA. The correlation is probably due to wind Roche lobe overflow.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
