Cross-Task Transfer for Geotagged Audiovisual Aerial Scene Recognition
Aerial scene recognition is a fundamental task in remote sensing and has
recently received increased interest. While the visual information from
overhead images with powerful models and efficient algorithms yields
considerable performance on scene recognition, it still suffers from the
variation of ground objects, lighting conditions etc. Inspired by the
multi-channel perception theory in cognition science, in this paper, for
improving the performance on the aerial scene recognition, we explore a novel
audiovisual aerial scene recognition task using both images and sounds as
input. Based on an observation that some specific sound events are more likely
to be heard at a given geographic location, we propose to exploit the knowledge
from the sound events to improve the performance on the aerial scene
recognition. For this purpose, we have constructed a new dataset named AuDio
Visual Aerial sceNe reCognition datasEt (ADVANCE). With the help of this
dataset, we evaluate three proposed approaches for transferring the sound event
knowledge to the aerial scene recognition task in a multimodal learning
framework, and show the benefit of exploiting the audio information for the
aerial scene recognition. The source code is publicly available for

Proteomic analysis of the response of the plant growth-promoting bacterium Pseudomonas putida UW4 to nickel stress
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Plant growth-promoting bacteria can alleviate the inhibitory effects of various heavy metals on plant growth, via decreasing levels of stress-induced ethylene. However, little has been done to detect any mechanisms specific for heavy metal resistance of this kind of bacteria. Here, we investigate the response of the wild-type plant growth-promoting bacterium <it>Pseudomonas putida </it>UW4 to nickel stress using proteomic approaches. The mutant strain <it>P. putida </it>UW4/AcdS<sup>-</sup>, lacking a functional 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase gene, was also assessed for its response to nickel stress.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two dimensional difference in-gel electrophoresis (DIGE) was used to detect significantly up- or down- regulated proteins (<it>p </it>< 0.05, | ratio | > 1.5) in <it>P. putida </it>in response to the presence of 2 mM Ni. Out of a total number of 1,702 proteins detected on the analytical gels for <it>P. putida </it>UW4, the expression levels of 82 (4.82%) proteins increased significantly while the expression of 81 (4.76%) proteins decreased significantly. Of 1,575 proteins detected on the analytical gels for <it>P. putida </it>UW4/AcdS<sup>-</sup>, the expression levels of 74 (4.70%) proteins increased and 51 (3.24%) proteins decreased significantly. Thirty-five proteins whose expression was altered were successfully identified by mass spectrometry and sequence comparisons with related species. Nineteen of the identified proteins were detected as differentially expressed in both wild-type and mutant expression profiles.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Functional assessment of proteins with significantly altered expression levels revealed several mechanisms thought to be involved in bacterial heavy metal detoxification, including general stress adaptation, anti-oxidative stress and heavy metal efflux proteins. This information may contribute to the development of plant growth-promoting bacteria mediated phytoremediation processes.</p
Hyaluronic Acid Instillation Following Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Double-blinded, Randomised Controlled Study.
PURPOSE: To assess the effect of hyaluronic acid instillation after arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction for improving pain, range of movement, and function of the knee. METHODS: 28 men and 4 women underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction for isolated ACL rupture (partial or complete) and instability after recreational sports injury 2 to 120 months earlier. They were randomised to undergo arthroscopic ACL reconstruction followed by intra-articular viscoseal instillation (13 men and 3 women) or arthroscopic ACL reconstruction alone (15 men and 1 woman). The knee injury osteoarthritis outcome score (for pain, symptoms, activities of daily living, sport and recreation function, and quality of life), range of movement, knee circumference, and analgesic use were assessed on days -1, 1, and 2, and weeks 2, 6 and 12. RESULTS: Patient demographics were similar at baseline. At postoperative days 1 and 2, all subscales of the knee injury osteoarthritis outcome score (except for quality of life) were significantly higher in the viscoseal group. At weeks 2, 6, and 12, improvement in both groups equalised. Knee swelling (change in knee circumference) was significantly less in the viscoseal group at days 1 and 2 (p=0.009 and p=0.038, respectively, Mann-Whitney U test). Only one patient in the viscoseal group had a limited range of movement. No patient developed any adverse reaction. CONCLUSION: Intra-articular viscoseal instillation improved pain control and swelling 2 days after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction.published_or_final_versio
Chronic adiponectin deficiency leads to Alzheimer’s disease-like cognitive impairments and pathologies through AMPK inactivation and cerebral insulin resistance in aged mice
BACKGROUND: Insulin resistance is the major pathogenesis underlying type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and these patients have doubled risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Increasing evidence suggests that insulin resistance plays an important role in AD pathogenesis, possibly due to abnormal GSK3β activation, causing intra- and extracellular amyloid-beta (Aβ) accumulation. Adiponectin (APN) is an adipokine with insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory effects. Reduced circulatory APN level is associated with insulin resistance and T2DM. The role of APN in AD has not been elucidated. In this study, we aim to examine if adiponectin deficiency would lead to cerebral insulin resistance, cognitive decline and Alzheimer's-like pathology in mice. METHODS: To study the role of adiponectin in cognitive functions, we employed adiponectin-knockout (APN-KO) mice and demonstrated chronic APN deficiency in their CNS. Behavioral tests were performed to study the cognitions of male APN-KO mice. Brains and tissue lysates were collected to study the pathophysiological and molecular changes in the brain of APN-KO mice. SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line was used to study the molecular mechanism upon APN and insulin treatment. RESULTS: Aged APN-deficient mice displayed spatial memory and learning impairments, fear-conditioned memory deficit as well as anxiety. These mice also developed AD pathologies including increased cerebral Aβ42 level, Aβ deposition, hyperphosphorylated Tau proteins, microgliosis and astrogliosis with increased cerebral IL-1β and TNFα levels that associated with increased neuronal apoptosis and reduced synaptic proteins levels, suggesting APN deficiency may lead to neuronal and synaptic loss in the brain. AD pathologies-associated APN-KO mice displayed attenuated AMPK phosphorylation and impaired insulin signaling including decreased Akt induction and increased GSK3β activation in the hippocampus and frontal cortex. Aged APN-KO mice developed hippocampal insulin resistance with reduced pAkt induction upon intracerebral insulin injection. Consistently, APN treatment in SH-SY5Y cells with insulin resistance and overexpressing Aβ induce higher pAkt levels through AdipoR1 upon insulin treatment whereas the induction was blocked by compound C, indicating APN can enhance neuronal insulin sensitivity through AMPK activation. CONCLUSION: Our results indicated that chronic APN deficiency inactivated AMPK causing insulin desensitization and elicited AD-like pathogenesis in aged mice which also developed significant cognitive impairments and psychiatric symptoms.published_or_final_versio

Bayesian network approach to fault diagnosis of a hydroelectric generation system
This study focuses on the fault diagnosis of a hydroelectric generation system with hydraulic-mechanical-electric structures. To achieve this analysis, a methodology combining Bayesian network approach and fault diagnosis expert system is presented, which enables the time-based maintenance to transform to the condition-based maintenance. First, fault types and the associated fault characteristics of the generation system are extensively analyzed to establish a precise Bayesian network. Then, the Noisy-Or modeling approach is used to implement the fault diagnosis expert system, which not only reduces node computations without severe information loss but also eliminates the data dependency. Some typical applications are proposed to fully show the methodology capability of the fault diagnosis of the hydroelectric generation system
