    White rot fungi are suited for microbial degradation of trinitrotoluene. In laboratory screening tests best results were obtained with Bjerkandera adusta. Decontamination and detoxification have been studied in an 150 l laboratory-soil-reactor, and results were transfered to the 1 m"3 scale. Amino-dinitrotoluene represents the first intermediate of TNT degradation by B. adusta. The mechanism of metabolism has been studied using "1"4C-labelled TNT. Moisture and ventilation are essential factors for large-scale TNT degradation. Results derived from the present study yield the fundamentals of a restoration process for TNT contaminated soils.
