Bacterial lepidocrocite and hematite in chert
Lepidocrocite and hematite associated with fossilized bacterial cells have been detected in 2.0 Ga red chert from the Gunflmt Iron Formation by electron microprobe techniques and transmission electron microscopy. The chert consists mainly of quartz with traces of lepidocrocite and hematite. Filamentous and coccoid cyanobactena occur inside accumulations of Si and Fe with trace amounts of AI , Mg , and C. The ancient microorganisms served as nucleation sites for the precipitation oi iron. The fossilized microbial cells were first mineralized by lepidocrocite which later was transformed during diagenesis to hematite.Tazaki K., Ferris F.G., Wiese R.G., Fyfe W.S.
