Order \alpha_s^2 Contributions to charm production in charged-current deep-inelastic lepton-hadron scattering
The most important part of the order corrections to the charm
component of the charged-current structure functions and
have been calculated. This calculation is based on the asymptotic
form of the heavy-quark coefficient functions corresponding to the higher order
corrections to the W-boson-gluon fusion process. These coefficient functions
which are in principle only valid for can be also used to
estimate the order contributions at lower values provided . It turns out that the above corrections are appreciable in the large
-region and they explain the discrepancy found for the structure functions
between the fixed-flavour scheme (FFS) and the variable-flavour-number scheme
(VFNS). These corrections also hamper the extraction of the strange-quark
density from the data obtained for the charged-current and the
electromagnetic-current processes.Comment: 45 pages LaTeX, 17 Postscript Figure
The mammalian gene function resource: The International Knockout Mouse Consortium
In 2007, the International Knockout Mouse Consortium (IKMC) made the ambitious promise to generate mutations in virtually every protein-coding gene of the mouse genome in a concerted worldwide action. Now, 5 years later, the IKMC members have developed highthroughput gene trapping and, in particular, gene-targeting pipelines and generated more than 17,400 mutant murine embryonic stem (ES) cell clones and more than 1,700 mutant mouse strains, most of them conditional. A common IKMC web portal (www.knockoutmouse.org) has been established, allowing easy access to this unparalleled biological resource. The IKMC materials considerably enhance functional gene annotation of the mammalian genome and will have a major impact on future biomedical research
Can user-paced, menu-free spoken language interfaces improve dual task handling while driving?
The use of speech-based interaction over traditional means of interaction in secondary tasks may increase safety in demanding environments with high requirements on operator attention. Speech interfaces have suffered from issues similar to those of visual displays, as they often rely on a complex menu structure that corresponds to that of visual systems. Recent advances in speech technology allow the use of natural language, eliminating the need for menu structures and offering a tighter coupling between the intention to act and the completion of the action. Modern speech technology may not only make already existing types of interaction safer, but also opens up for new applications, which may enhance safety. One such application is a speech-based hazard reporting system. A small fixed-base simulator study showed that drivers adapt the timing of the hazard reports to the situation at hand, such that an increase in reported workload was avoided

Jet physics in electron--proton scattering
Hadronic jets in electron–proton collisions at HERA have been used for some considerable time as a tool for tests of the theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics. Using jet final states, basic concepts like the factorisation ansatz for cross-section calculations, the perturbative approach to the cross section and the universality of the proton parton distribution functions can be examined. More concretely, jet measurements provide ready access to the strong coupling of QCD, α
s
, and to the parton distributions. In this report, an overview of jet results from the HERA experiments H1 and ZEUS and their interpretation is given together with a description of the theoretical foundations of jet physics in electron–proton collisions and of the experimental environment at HERA. Special emphasis is put on extractions of α
s
values and on the influence of jet data on fits of the proton parton distribution functions. Where useful, the HERA results are also discussed in the light of results from other colliders like LEP, the Tevatron or the LHC. The central message from these studies is that QCD does not only describe most of the measurements very well, but that QCD at HERA has achieved the status of a precision theory. On the other hand it is shown that further understanding of problematic issues relies critically on theoretical progress in the form of improved models or of increased precision in analytical calculations
