The Center of the Spinal Cord May Be Central to Its Repair
A recent PLoS Biology report from Meletis et al. (2008) strongly suggests that ependymal cells are a key source of endogenous stem cells in the spinal cord. Advances in understanding endogenous neural stem cells may facilitate repair of the injured central nervous system

Critical systems thinking and pluralism : a new constellation
This thesis explains theoretical issues concerned with paradigm incommensurability and the solutions offered by various critical systems writers. The problems of "imperialism" are outlined together with an analysis of the meta-theoretical views which purport to avoid imperialism. It is suggested that researchers attempting to understand alien or incommensurable paradigms or cultures often succumb to imperialism in its various guises. Three models of methods used by such researchers are described. The last of these, the model of critical appreciation, incorporates two crucial components advocated by Habermas and endorsed by Bernstein: critical self-reflection based upon an analogy of Freud's model of dream analysis, and an explicit critique of ideology. Methodological guidelines are offered which draw on an analogy of dream-analysis and on historical reconstruction as ideology-critique. It is suggested that any social inquiry must contain elements of "reflexive" (philosophical) and "scientific" (practical) inquiry together with ideology-critique and critical self-reflection in order to bring about the emancipation of individuals and groups. A model of self-society dynamics reveals the need for reflexive inquiry, discourse and action (as exemplified in the critical appreciation process) in any efforts to transform 'self' or 'society'. Consideration turns to the relationship between critical thinking and pluralism. The enriched version of critical appreciation is shown to require an a prior commitment to a new, discordant pluralism, which it also suggests in its modus operandii. In particular, the 'either/or' problematique presented by many writers is transformed into a 'both/and' juxtapositioning which lends its support to the form of pluralism involving both critical self-reflection and ideology-critique. The fully elaborated model of critical appreciation will finally be shown to fulfil the demands of the commitments of critical systems thinking
An Introduction to Data Analysis in Asteroseismology
A practical guide is presented to some of the main data analysis concepts and
techniques employed contemporarily in the asteroseismic study of stars
exhibiting solar-like oscillations. The subjects of digital signal processing
and spectral analysis are introduced first. These concern the acquisition of
continuous physical signals to be subsequently digitally analyzed. A number of
specific concepts and techniques relevant to asteroseismology are then
presented as we follow the typical workflow of the data analysis process,
namely, the extraction of global asteroseismic parameters and individual mode
parameters (also known as peak-bagging) from the oscillation spectrum.Comment: Lecture presented at the IVth Azores International Advanced School in

Predicting patterns of service utilization within children\u27s mental health agencies
Background: Some children with mental health (MH) problems have been found to receive ongoing care, either continuously or episodically. We sought to replicate patterns of MH service use over extended time periods, and test predictors of these patterns. Methods: Latent class analyses were applied to 4 years of visit data from five MH agencies and nearly 6000 children, 4-to 13-years-old at their first visit. Results: Five patterns of service use were identified, replicating previous findings. Overall, 14% of cases had two or more episodes of care and 23% were involved for more than 2 years. Most children (53%) were seen for just a few visits within a few months. Two patterns represented cases with two or more episodes of care spanning multiple years. In the two remaining patterns, children tended to have just one episode of care, but the number of sessions and length of involvement varied. Using discriminant function analyses, we were able to predict with just over 50% accuracy children\u27s pattern of service use. Severe externalizing behaviors, high impairment, and high family burden predicted service use patterns with long durations of involvement and frequent visits. Conclusions: Optimal treatment approaches for children seen for repeated episodes of care or for care lasting multiple years need to be developed. Children with the highest level of need (severe pathology, impairment, and burden) are probably best served by providing high intensity services at the start of care
Comparison of advanced gravitational-wave detectors
We compare two advanced designs for gravitational-wave antennas in terms of
their ability to detect two possible gravitational wave sources. Spherical,
resonant mass antennas and interferometers incorporating resonant sideband
extraction (RSE) were modeled using experimentally measurable parameters. The
signal-to-noise ratio of each detector for a binary neutron star system and a
rapidly rotating stellar core were calculated. For a range of plausible
parameters we found that the advanced LIGO interferometer incorporating RSE
gave higher signal-to-noise ratios than a spherical detector resonant at the
same frequency for both sources. Spheres were found to be sensitive to these
sources at distances beyond our galaxy. Interferometers were sensitive to these
sources at far enough distances that several events per year would be expected
Deviation From \Lambda CDM With Cosmic Strings Networks
In this work, we consider a network of cosmic strings to explain possible
deviation from \Lambda CDM behaviour. We use different observational data to
constrain the model and show that a small but non zero contribution from the
string network is allowed by the observational data which can result in a
reasonable departure from \Lambda CDM evolution. But by calculating the
Bayesian Evidence, we show that the present data still strongly favour the
concordance \Lambda CDM model irrespective of the choice of the prior.Comment: 15 Pages, Latex Style, 4 eps figures, Revised Version, Accepted for

Experimental Probes of Localized Gravity: On and Off the Wall
The phenomenology of the Randall-Sundrum model of localized gravity is
analyzed in detail for the two scenarios where the Standard Model (SM) gauge
and matter fields are either confined to a TeV scale 3-brane or may propagate
in a slice of five dimensional anti-deSitter space. In the latter instance, we
derive the interactions of the graviton, gauge, and fermion Kaluza-Klein (KK)
states. The resulting phenomenological signatures are shown to be highly
dependent on the value of the 5-dimensional fermion mass and differ
substantially from the case where the SM fields lie on the TeV-brane. In both
scenarios, we examine the collider signatures for direct production of the
graviton and gauge KK towers as well as their induced contributions to
precision electroweak observables. These direct and indirect signatures are
found to play a complementary role in the exploration of the model parameter
space. In the case where the SM field content resides on the TeV-brane, we show
that the LHC can probe the full parameter space and hence will either discover
or exclude this model if the scale of electroweak physics on the 3-brane is
less than 10 TeV. We also show that spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking
of the SM must take place on the TeV-brane.Comment: 62 pages, Latex, 22 figure
Response of Wheat Fungal Diseases to Elevated Atmospheric CO2 Level
Infection with fungal pathogens on wheat varieties with different levels of resistance was
tested at ambient (NC, 390 ppm) and elevated (EC, 750 ppm) atmospheric CO2 levels in the
phytotron. EC was found to affect many aspects of the plant-pathogen interaction. Infection
with most fungal diseases was usually found to be promoted by elevated CO2 level in susceptible
varieties. Powdery mildew, leaf rust and stem rust produced more severe symptoms on
plants of susceptible varieties, while resistant varieties were not infected even at EC. The penetration
of Fusarium head blight (FHB) into the spike was delayed by EC in Mv Mambo, while
it was unaffected in Mv Regiment and stimulated in Mv Emma. EC increased the propagation
of FHB in Mv Mambo and Mv Emma. Enhanced resistance to the spread of Fusarium within
the plant was only found in Mv Regiment, which has good resistance to penetration but poor
resistance to the spread of FHB at NC. FHB infection was more severe at EC in two varieties,
while the plants of Mv Regiment, which has the best field resistance at NC, did not exhibit a
higher infection level at EC.
The above results suggest that breeding for new resistant varieties will remain a useful
means of preventing more severe infection in a future with higher atmospheric CO2 levels
Pathological mucus and impaired mucus clearance in cystic fibrosis patients result from increased concentration, not altered pH
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a recessive genetic disease that is characterised by airway mucus plugging and reduced mucus clearance. There are currently alternative hypotheses that attempt to describe the abnormally viscous and elastic mucus that is a hallmark of CF airways disease, including: 1) loss of CF transmembrane regulator (CFTR)-dependent airway surface volume (water) secretion, producing mucus hyperconcentration-dependent increased viscosity, and 2) impaired bicarbonate secretion by CFTR, producing acidification of airway surfaces and increased mucus viscosity. A series of experiments was conducted to determine the contributions of mucus concentration versus pH to the rheological properties of airway mucus across length scales from the nanoscopic to macroscopic. For length scales greater than the nanoscopic, i.e. those relevant to mucociliary clearance, the effect of mucus concentration dominated over the effect of airway acidification. Mucus hydration and chemical reduction of disulfide bonds that connect mucin monomers are more promising therapeutic approaches than alkalisation
