Ion-beam modification of fullerene
The response of thin films of fullerene (C60) to energetic ion impact is investigated. The diagnostics employed include Fourier-transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. By combining the information obtained from these diagnostics with that from the dependence of the conductivity on ion dose, it is concluded that each C60 molecule completely disintegrates when hit by an energetic ion. The cross section for the destruction is about 6×10-13 cm2 for irradiation with 620-keV Xe ions. The disintegration occurs when C atoms are knocked out of the molecule either directly by the impinging ion or by an energetic knock-on C atom within the damage cascade. On the inflationary flow equations
I explore properties of the inflationary flow equations. I show that the flow
equations do not correspond directly to inflationary dynamics. Nevertheless,
they can be used as a rather complicated algorithm for generating inflationary
models. I demonstrate that the flow equations can be solved analytically and
give a closed form solution for the potentials to which flow equation solutions
correspond. I end by considering some simpler algorithms for generating
stochastic sets of slow-roll inflationary models for confrontation with

Spin relaxation in (110) and (001) InAs/GaSb superlattices
We report an enhancement of the electron spin relaxation time (T1) in a (110)
InAs/GaSb superlattice by more than an order of magnitude (25 times) relative
to the corresponding (001) structure. The spin dynamics were measured using
polarization sensitive pump probe techniques and a mid-infrared, subpicosecond
PPLN OPO. Longer T1 times in (110) superlattices are attributed to the
suppression of the native interface asymmetry and bulk inversion asymmetry
contributions to the precessional D'yakonov Perel spin relaxation process.
Calculations using a nonperturbative 14-band nanostructure model give good
agreement with experiment and indicate that possible structural inversion
asymmetry contributions to T1 associated with compositional mixing at the
superlattice interfaces may limit the observed spin lifetime in (110)
superlattices. Our findings have implications for potential spintronics
applications using InAs/GaSb heterostructures.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Monte Carlo reconstruction of the inflationary potential
We present Monte Carlo reconstruction, a new method for ``inverting''
observational data to constrain the form of the scalar field potential
responsible for inflation. This stochastic technique is based on the flow
equation formalism and has distinct advantages over reconstruction methods
based on a Taylor expansion of the potential. The primary ansatz required for
Monte Carlo reconstruction is simply that inflation is driven by a single
scalar field. We also require a very mild slow roll constraint, which can be
made arbitrarily weak since Monte Carlo reconstruction is implemented at
arbitrary order in the slow roll expansion. While our method cannot evade
fundamental limits on the accuracy of reconstruction, it can be simply and
consistently applied to poor data sets, and it takes advantage of the attractor
properties of single-field inflation models to constrain the potential outside
the small region directly probed by observations. We show examples of Monte
Carlo reconstruction for data sets similar to that expected from the Planck
satellite, and for a hypothetical measurement with a factor of five better

Current constraints on Cosmological Parameters from Microwave Background Anisotropies
We compare the latest observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB)
Anisotropies with the theoretical predictions of the standard scenario of
structure formation. Assuming a primordial power spectrum of adiabatic
perturbations we found that the total energy density is constrained to be
while the energy density in baryon and Cold Dark
Matter (CDM) are and ,
(all at 68% C.L.) respectively. The primordial spectrum is consistent with
scale invariance, () and the age of the universe is
Gyrs. Adding informations from Large Scale Structure and
Supernovae, we found a strong evidence for a cosmological constant
and a value of the Hubble parameter
. Restricting this combined analysis to flat universes, we put
constraints on possible 'extensions' of the standard scenario. A gravity waves
contribution to the quadrupole anisotropy is limited to be (95%
c.l.). A constant equation of state for the dark energy component is bound to
be (95% c.l.). We constrain the effective relativistic degrees
of freedom and the neutrino chemical potential and (massless neutrinos).Comment: The status of cosmological parameters before WMAP. In press on Phys.

Inflation: flow, fixed points and observables to arbitrary order in slow roll
I generalize the inflationary flow equations of Hoffman and Turner to
arbitrary order in slow roll. This makes it possible to study the predictions
of slow roll inflation in the full observable parameter space of tensor/scalar
ratio , spectral index , and running . It also becomes
possible to identify exact fixed points in the parameter flow. I numerically
evaluate the flow equations to fifth order in slow roll for a set of randomly
chosen initial conditions and find that the models cluster strongly in the
observable parameter space, indicating a ``generic'' set of predictions for
slow roll inflation. I comment briefly on the the interesting proposed
correspondence between flow in inflationary parameter space and renormalization

Red Queen Coevolution on Fitness Landscapes
Species do not merely evolve, they also coevolve with other organisms.
Coevolution is a major force driving interacting species to continuously evolve
ex- ploring their fitness landscapes. Coevolution involves the coupling of
species fit- ness landscapes, linking species genetic changes with their
inter-specific ecological interactions. Here we first introduce the Red Queen
hypothesis of evolution com- menting on some theoretical aspects and empirical
evidences. As an introduction to the fitness landscape concept, we review key
issues on evolution on simple and rugged fitness landscapes. Then we present
key modeling examples of coevolution on different fitness landscapes at

Mucin concentrations and peripheral airway obstruction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Recent studies have revealed that increased airway mucin concentrations in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) slow mucociliary clearance and produce mucus adhesion with mucus plug formation (1). Furthermore, data from SPIROMICS (Subpopulations and Intermediate Outcomes in COPD Study) demonstrated an association between induced sputum (IS) mucin concentrations and measures of airflow obstruction, e.g., FEV1 and FEV1/FVC (2). Peripheral airways are the earliest and dominant sites of airflow obstruction in COPD, and Hogg and colleagues demonstrated that intraluminal mucus plugs contribute a major component to peripheral airway obstruction (3). For development of targeted therapies, it is important to understand whether there are associations between mucus concentrations and peripheral airway obstruction in COPD
Precambrian non-marine stromatolites in alluvial fan deposits, the Copper Harbor Conglomerate, upper Michigan
Laminated cryptalgal carbonates occur in the Precambrian Copper Harbor Conglomerate of northern Michigan, which was deposited in the Keweenawan Trough, an aborted proto-oceanic rift. This unit is composed of three major facies deposited by braided streams on a large alluvial-fan complex. Coarse clastics were deposited in braided channels, predominantly as longitudinal bars, whereas cross-bedded sandstones were deposited by migrating dunes or linguoid bars. Fine-grained overbank deposits accumulated in abandoned channels. Gypsum moulds and carbonate-filled cracks suggest an arid climate during deposition. Stromatolites interstratified with these clastic facies occur as laterally linked drapes over cobbles, as laterally linked contorted beds in mudstone, as oncolites, and as poorly developed mats in coarse sandstones. Stromatolites also are interbedded with oolitic beds and intraclastic conglomerates. Stromatolitic microstructure consists of alternating detrital and carbonate laminae, and open-space structures. Radial-fibrous calcite fans are superimposed on the laminae. The laminae are interpreted as algal in origin, whereas the origin of the radial fibrous calcite is problematic. The stromatolites are inferred to have grown in lakes which occupied abandoned channels on the fan surface. Standing water on a permeable alluvial fan in an arid climate requires a high water table maintained by high precipitation, or local elevation of the water table, possibly due to the close proximity of a lake. Occurrence of stromatolites in the upper part of the Copper Harbor Conglomerate near the base of the lacustrine Nonesuch Shale suggests that these depositional sites may have been near the Nonesuch Lake.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72022/1/j.1365-3091.1983.tb00713.x.pd
