MSDIP: A method for coding source domains in metaphor analysis
This article describes the Metaphorical Source Domain Identification Procedure (MSDIP), which can be used to code source domains in metaphor identification. In the first part of the article, we describe the complexity of source-domain coding in corpus analysis. We argue that, in many cases, discourse is underspecified and multiple source-domain candidates may be relevant for a specific metaphorical expression. For instance, if a word like “fight” or “target” is used metaphorically, it could refer to either the source domain of war or sports. To make these issues explicit for analysts, we developed MSDIP, which builds on and extends the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU). In the second part of the article, we explain the coding steps of MSDIP and subsequently report on a reliability analysis, demonstrating the reproducibility of the procedure. We end with a number of detailed sample analyses, demonstrating the role of co-text and context in selecting the likeliest source-domain candidate through MSDIP. These analyses show that MSDIP is both reliable and flexible in dealing with the complexities of real-life discourse during source-domain coding
Same Journey, Different Paths:Caregiver Burden among Informal Caregivers of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with an Uncertain or Poor Cancer Prognosis (UPCP)
A minority of adolescent and young adult cancer patients (AYA) live with an uncertain or poor prognosis (UPCP). Caring for a young, advanced cancer patient can lead to caregiver burden. This study aims to provide insight into burden on informal caregivers of AYA cancer patients with UPCP. In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with parents (n = 12), siblings (n = 7), friends (n = 7), and partners (n = 13). Thematic analysis was performed to derive themes from the data. Participants reported sleeping problems and stress. They struggle with uncertainty, fear, loss, and negative emotions. Family life is altered due to solely taking care of the children, but also the AYA. Contact with friends and family is changed. The relationship to the AYA can shift positively (e.g., becoming closer) or negatively (e.g., more conflict or no longer being attracted). Participants were under pressure, having to take on many responsibilities and multiple roles. In the financial domain, they report less income and often must continue working. A high amount of caregiver burden is experienced among informal caregivers of AYAs with UPCP. Yet only part of the impact appears to be age specific. Specific, age-adjusted interventions can be developed to lower the burden.</p

Molecular dynamic simulation of a homogeneous bcc -> hcp transition
We have performed molecular dynamic simulations of a Martensitic bcc->hcp
transformation in a homogeneous system. The system evolves into three
Martensitic variants, sharing a common nearest neighbor vector along a bcc
direction, plus an fcc region. Nucleation occurs locally, followed by
subsequent growth. We monitor the time-dependent scattering S(q,t) during the
transformation, and find anomalous, Brillouin zone-dependent scattering similar
to that observed experimentally in a number of systems above the transformation
temperature. This scattering is shown to be related to the elastic strain
associated with the transformation, and is not directly related to the phonon

Development of a tight-binding potential for bcc-Zr. Application to the study of vibrational properties
We present a tight-binding potential based on the moment expansion of the
density of states, which includes up to the fifth moment. The potential is
fitted to bcc and hcp Zr and it is applied to the computation of vibrational
properties of bcc-Zr. In particular, we compute the isothermal elastic
constants in the temperature range 1200K < T < 2000K by means of standard Monte
Carlo simulation techniques. The agreement with experimental results is
satisfactory, especially in the case of the stability of the lattice with
respect to the shear associated with C'. However, the temperature decrease of
the Cauchy pressure is not reproduced. The T=0K phonon frequencies of bcc-Zr
are also computed. The potential predicts several instabilities of the bcc
structure, and a crossing of the longitudinal and transverse modes in the (001)
direction. This is in agreement with recent ab initio calculations in Sc, Ti,

Microstructure and Porosity of Laser Welds in Cast Ti-6Al-4V with Addition of Boron
Addition of small amounts of boron to cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy has shown to render a finer microstructure and improved mechanical properties. For such an improved alloy to be widely applicable for large aerospace structural components, successful welding of such castings is essential. In the present work, the microstructure and porosity of laser welds in a standard grade cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy as well as two modified alloy versions with different boron concentrations have been investigated. Prior-β grain reconstruction revealed the prior-β grain structure in the weld zones. In fusion zones of the welds, boron was found to refine the grain size significantly and rendered narrow elongated grains. TiB particles in the prior-β grain boundaries in the cast base material restricted grain growth in the heat-affected zone. The TiB particles that existed in the as cast alloys decreased in size in the fusion zones of welds. The hardness in the weld zones was higher than in the base material and boron did not have a significant effect on hardness of the weld zones. The fusion zones were smaller in the boron-modified alloys as compared with Ti-6Al-4V without boron. Computed tomography X-ray investigations of the laser welds showed that pores in the FZ of the boron modified alloys were confined to the lower part of the welds, suggesting that boron addition influences melt pool flow
