Equivalence Between Space-Time-Matter and Brane-World Theories
We study the relationship between space-time-matter (STM) and brane theories.
These two theories look very different at first sight, and have different
motivation for the introduction of a large extra dimension. However, we show
that they are equivalent to each other. First we demonstrate that STM predicts
local and non-local high-energy corrections to general relativity in 4D, which
are identical to those predicted by brane-world models. Secondly, we notice
that in brane models the usual matter in 4D is a consequence of the dependence
of five-dimensional metrics on the extra coordinate. If the 5D bulk metric is
independent of the extra dimension, then the brane is void of matter. Thus, in
brane theory matter and geometry are unified, which is exactly the paradigm
proposed in STM. Consequently, these two 5D theories share the same concepts
and predict the same physics. This is important not only from a theoretical
point of view, but also in practice. We propose to use a combination of both
methods to alleviate the difficult task of finding solutions on the brane. We
show an explicit example that illustrate the feasibility of our proposal.Comment: Typos corrected, three references added. To appear in Mod. Phys. Let
Quark masses without Yukawa hierarchies
A model based on the local gauge group SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x U(1)_X without
particles with exotic electric charges is shown to be able to provide the quark
mass spectrum and their mixing, by means of universal see-saw mechanisms,
avoiding a hierarchy in the Yukawa coupling constants.Comment: 7 pages, 1 eps figure. Published in Europhysics Letter
Wave-like Solutions for Bianchi type-I cosmologies in 5D
We derive exact solutions to the vacuum Einstein field equations in 5D, under
the assumption that (i) the line element in 5D possesses self-similar symmetry,
in the classical understanding of Sedov, Taub and Zeldovich, and that (ii) the
metric tensor is diagonal and independent of the coordinates for ordinary 3D
space. These assumptions lead to three different types of self-similarity in
5D: homothetic, conformal and "wave-like". In this work we present the most
general wave-like solutions to the 5D field equations. Using the standard
technique based on Campbell's theorem, they generate a large number of
anisotropic cosmological models of Bianchi type-I, which can be applied to our
universe after the big-bang, when anisotropies could have played an important
role. We present a complete review of all possible cases of self-similar
anisotropic cosmologies in 5D. Our analysis extends a number of previous
studies on wave-like solutions in 5D with spatial spherical symmetry
Density functional theory study of the nematic-isotropic transition in an hybrid cell
We have employed the Density Functional Theory formalism to investigate the
nematic-isotropic capillary transitions of a nematogen confined by walls that
favor antagonist orientations to the liquid crystal molecules (hybrid cell). We
analyse the behavior of the capillary transition as a function of the
fluid-substrate interactions and the pore width. In addition to the usual
capillary transition between isotropic-like to nematic-like states, we find
that this transition can be suppressed when one substrate is wet by the
isotropic phase and the other by the nematic phase. Under this condition the
system presents interface-like states which allow to continuously transform the
nematic-like phase to the isotropic-like phase without undergoing a phase
transition. Two different mechanisms for the disappearance of the capillary
transition are identified. When the director of the nematic-like state is
homogeneously planar-anchored with respect to the substrates, the capillary
transition ends up in a critical point. This scenario is analogous to the
observed in Ising models when confined in slit pores with opposing surface
fields which have critical wetting transitions. When the nematic-like state has
a linearly distorted director field, the capillary transition continuously
transforms in a transition between two nematic-like states.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures, submitted to J. Chem. Phy
Dark matter from the scalar sector of 3-3-1 models without exotic electric charges
We show that three SU(2) singlet neutral scalars (two CP-even and one CP-odd)
in the spectrum of models based on the gauge symmetry SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X
U(1)_X, which do not contain exotic electric charges, are realistic candidates
for thermally generated self-interacting dark matter in the Universe, a type of
dark matter that has been recently proposed in order to overcome some
difficulties of collisionless cold dark matter models at the galactic scale.
These candidates arise without introducing a new mass scale in the model and/or
without the need for a discrete symmetry to stabilize them, but at the expense
of tuning several combinations of parameters of the scalar potential.Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages. v2: typos corrected, one reference added. v3:

SB 219 - Autonomous Vehicles
The Act amends Georgiaâs Motor Vehicles and Traffic Code to create a legal framework for autonomous vehicles to operate in Georgia. Persons responsible for operating fully autonomous vehicles are exempted from holding a driverâs license. In the event of an accident involving an autonomous vehicle, the vehicle must remain at the scene and the operator of the autonomous vehicle must provide necessary information to law enforcement. Minimum liability insurance requirements for autonomous vehicles will be the same as minimum coverages required for the taxi and limousine industry after January 1, 2020. Minimum coverages are set at 250 percent of those coverages until December 31, 2019. Owners must register their autonomous vehicles with the state
Modern cosmologies from empty Kaluza-Klein solutions in 5D
We show that the empty five-dimensional solutions of
Davidson-Sonnenschtein-Vozmediano, {\em Phys. Rev.} {\bf D32} (1985)1330, in
the "old" Kaluza-Klein gravity, under appropriate interpretation can generate
an ample variety of cosmological models in 4D, which include the
higher-dimensional modifications to general relativity predicted by "modern"
versions of noncompactified 5D gravity as, e.g., induced-matter and braneworld
theories. This is the first time that these solutions are investigated in a
systematic way as embeddings for cosmological models in 4D. They provide a
different formulation, which is complementary to the approaches used in current
versions of 5D relativity.Comment: Accepted for publication in JHE
One Step Non SUSY Unification
We show that it is possible to achieve one step gauge coupling unification in
a general class of non supersymmetric models which at low energies have only
the standard particle content and extra Higgs fields doublets. The constraints
are the experimental values of , and
at , and the lower bounds for FCNC and proton decay rates. Specific
example are pointed out.Comment: 10 pages, Latex file,, uses epsf style, Two Postscript figures

Cosmological Implications of a Non-Separable 5D Solution of the Vacuum Einstein Field Equations
An exact class of solutions of the 5D vacuum Einstein field equations (EFEs)
is obtained. The metric coefficients are found to be non-separable functions of
time and the extra coordinate and the induced metric on = constant
hypersurfaces has the form of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology. The 5D
manifold and 3D and 4D submanifolds are in general curved, which distinguishes
this solution from previous ones in the literature. The singularity structure
of the manifold is explored: some models in the class do not exhibit a big
bang, while other exhibit a big bang and a big crunch. For the models with an
initial singularity, the equation of state of the induced matter evolves from
radiation like at early epochs to Milne-like at late times and the big bang
manifests itself as a singular hypersurface in 5D. The projection of comoving
5D null geodesics onto the 4D submanifold is shown to be compatible with
standard 4D comoving trajectories, while the expansion of 5D null congruences
is shown to be in line with conventional notions of the Hubble expansion.Comment: 8 pages, in press in J. Math. Phy
