    Small atom diffusion and breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation in the supercooled liquid state of the Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 alloy

    Be diffusivity data in the bulk metallic glass forming alloy Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 are reported for temperatures between 530 and 710 K, extending 85 K into the supercooled liquid state of the alloy. At the glass transition temperature Tg, a change in temperature dependence of the data is observed, and above Tg the diffusivity increases more quickly with temperature than below. The data in the supercooled liquid can be described by a modified Arrhenius expression based on a diffusion mechanism suggested earlier. The comparison with viscosity data in the supercooled liquid state of Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 reveals a breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation, indicating a cooperative diffusion mechanism in the supercooled liquid state of Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5

    We study the single spin asymmetry in the lepton angular distribution of Drell-Yan processes in the frame work of collinear factorization. The asymmetry has been studied in the past and different results have been obtained. In our study we take an approach different than that used in the existing study. We explicitly calculate the transverse-spin dependent part of the differential cross-section with suitable parton states. Because the spin is transverse, one has to take multi-parton states for the purpose. Our result agrees with one of the existing results.     Virtual photon fragmentation functions

    We introduce operator definitions for virtual photon fragmentation functions, which are needed for reliable calculations of Drell-Yan transverse momentum (QTQ_T) distributions when QTQ_T is much larger than the invariant mass QQ. We derive the evolution equations for these fragmentation functions. We calculate the leading order evolution kernels for partons to fragment into a unpolarized as well as a polarized virtual photon. We find that fragmentation functions to a longitudinally polarized virtual photon are most important at small zz, and the fragmentation functions to a transversely polarized virtual photon dominate the large zz region. We discuss the implications of this finding to the J/ψ\psi mesons' polarization at large transverse momentum.Comment: Latex, 19 pages including 6 figures.     QCD Factorized Drell-Yan Cross Section at Large Transverse Momentum

    We derive a new factorization formula in perturbative quantum chromodynamics for the Drell-Yan massive lepton-pair cross section as a function of the transverse momentum QTQ_T of the pair. When QTQ_T is much larger than the pair's invariant mass QQ, this factorization formula systematically resums the logarithmic contributions of the type αsmlnm(QT2/Q2)\alpha_s^m \ln^m(Q_T^2/Q^2) to all orders in the strong coupling αs\alpha_s. When QTQQ_T\sim Q, our formula yields the same Drell-Yan cross section as conventional fixed order QCD perturbation theory. We show that resummation is important when the collision energy S\sqrt{S} is large enough and QTQQ_T\gg Q, and we argue that perturbative expansions are more stable and reliable in terms of the modified factorization formula.Comment: 36 pages, latex, including 16 figure

    Exchange interactions and temperature dependence of the magnetization in half--metallic Heusler alloys

    We study the exchange interactions in half-metallic Heusler alloys using first-principles calculations in conjunction with the frozen-magnon approximation. The Curie temperature is estimated within both mean-field (MF) and random-phase-approximation (RPA) approaches. For the half-Heusler alloys NiMnSb and CoMnSb the dominant interaction is between the nearest Mn atoms. In this case the MF and RPA estimations differ strongly. The RPA approach provides better agreement with experiment. The exchange interactions are more complex in the case of full-Heusler alloys Co2_2MnSi and Co2_2CrAl where the dominant effects are the inter-sublattice interactions between the Mn(Cr) and Co atoms and between Co atoms at different sublattices. For these compounds we find that both MF and RPA give very close values of the Curie temperature slightly underestimating experimental quantities. We study the influence of the lattice compression on the magnetic properties.     Role of the nonperturbative input in QCD resummed Drell-Yan QTQ_T-distributions

    We analyze the role of the nonperturbative input in the Collins, Soper, and Sterman (CSS)'s bb-space QCD resummation formalism for Drell-Yan transverse momentum (QTQ_T) distributions, and investigate the predictive power of the CSS formalism. We find that the predictive power of the CSS formalism has a strong dependence on the collision energy S\sqrt{S} in addition to its well-known Q2Q^2 dependence, and the S\sqrt{S} dependence improves the predictive power at collider energies. We show that a reliable extrapolation from perturbatively resummed bb-space distributions to the nonperturbative large bb region is necessary to ensure the correct QTQ_T distributions. By adding power corrections to the renormalization group equations in the CSS formalism, we derive a new extrapolation formalism. We demonstrate that at collider energies, the CSS resummation formalism plus our extrapolation has an excellent predictive power for WW and ZZ production at all transverse momenta QTQQ_T\le Q. We also show that the bb-space resummed QTQ_T distributions provide a good description of Drell-Yan data at fixed target energies.Comment: Latex, 43 pages including 15 figures; typos were correcte

    An increase in TcT_c under hydrostatic pressure in the superconducting doped topological insulator Nb0.25_{0.25}Bi2_2Se3_3

    We report an unexpected positive hydrostatic pressure derivative of the superconducting transition temperature in the doped topological insulator \NBS via dcdc SQUID magnetometry in pressures up to 0.6 GPa. This result is contrary to reports on the homologues \CBS and \SBS where smooth suppression of TcT_c is observed. Our results are consistent with recent Ginzburg-Landau theory predictions of a pressure-induced enhancement of TcT_c in the nematic multicomponent EuE_u state proposed to explain observations of rotational symmetry breaking in doped Bi2_2Se3_3 superconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
