Monthly population size of bait shrimp in the Bay was estimated from December 1984 to July 1985. Growth rates for male and female P. duorarum showed that pink shrimp exhibit a mean residence time in the nursery area (Biscayne Bay) of approximately 21 weeks. Monthly mortality rates were determined for each sex of pink shrimp. It was estimated that 23% and 26% of the male and female monthly population size, respectively, was absorbed by both the fishery and ecosystem monthly. Monthly proportion of the standing stock expected to die exclusively through fishing was 6.5% and 6.0% for males and females respectively. Estimates of emigration rates showed that approximately 4.0% of the population was lost from the Bay system each month. This surplus production was about 50% of the average monthly catch by the fleet. Fishing mortality represents only 8 - 9% of the losses to the shrimp population. The biggest source of loss is emigration, suggesting that most shrimp beyond the size at recruitment (to the fishery) are not utilized for food while in the Bay. Thus, it appears that the direct impact of the fishery on the bait shrimp population is relatively small. (PDF contains 46 pages

Bait shrimp fishery of Biscayne Bay

    Get PDF
A small but valuable live bait shrimp fishery has existed in Biscayne Bay since at least the early 1950s. In recent years there has been increasing pressure from recreational fishing and environmental groups to eliminate this fishery from the Bay because the fishing activity is generally thought to be deleterious to the environment and/or destructive to juvenile game fish. This study was initiated to update the existing knowledge of the bait shrimp fishery in Biscayne Bay and document historical trends in number of participants, fishing methods, fishing area, seasonality, total catch, catch-per-unit-effort, disposition of the catch, and economics of the industry. Lattice calculations on the spectrum of Dirac and Dirac-K\"ahler operators

We present a matrix technique to obtain the spectrum and the analytical index of some elliptic operators defined on compact Riemannian manifolds. The method uses matrix representations of the derivative which yield exact values for the derivative of a trigonometric polynomial. These matrices can be used to find the exact spectrum of an elliptic operator in particular cases and in general, to give insight into the properties of the solution of the spectral problem. As examples, the analytical index and the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on the torus and on the sphere are obtained and as an application of this technique, the spectrum of the Dirac-Kahler operator on the sphere is explored.Comment: 11 page

Critical phenomena of thick branes in warped spacetimes

    Get PDF
We have investigated the effects of a generic bulk first-order phase transition on thick Minkowski branes in warped geometries. As occurs in Euclidean space, when the system is brought near the phase transition an interface separating two ordered phases splits into two interfaces with a disordered phase in between. A remarkable and distinctive feature is that the critical temperature of the phase transition is lowered due to pure geometrical effects. We have studied a variety of critical exponents and the evolution of the transverse-traceless sector of the metric fluctuations.Comment: revtex4, 4 pages, 4 figures, some comments added, typos corrected, published in PR

A Study of Holographic Renormalization Group Flows in d=6 and d=3

We present an explicit study of the holographic renormalization group (RG) in six dimensions using minimal gauged supergravity. By perturbing the theory with the addition of a relevant operator of dimension four one flows to a non-supersymmetric conformal fixed point. There are also solutions describing non-conformal vacua of the same theory obtained by giving an expectation value to the operator. One such vacuum is supersymmetric and is obtained by using the true superpotential of the theory. We discuss the physical acceptability of these vacua by applying the criteria recently given by Gubser for the four dimensional case and find that those criteria give a clear physical picture in the six dimensional case as well. We use this example to comment on the role of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations in implementing the RG. We conclude with some remarks on AdS_4 and the status of three dimensional superconformal theories from squashed solutions of M-theory.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, V2: minor change

A Communication Intervention for Training Southern European Oncologists to Recognize Psychosocial Morbidity in Cancer. I - Development of the Model and Preliminary Results on Physicians' Satisfaction

BACKGROUND: The detection of psychosocial distress is a significant communication problem in Southern Europe and other countries. Work in this area is hampered by a lack of data. Because not much is known about training aimed at improving the recognition of psychosocial disorders in cancer patients, we developed a basic course model for medical oncology professionals. METHODS: A specific educational and experiential model (12 hours divided into 2 modules) involving formal teaching (ie, journal articles, large-group presentations), practice in small groups (ie, small-group exercises and role playing), and discussion in large groups was developed with the aim of improving the ability of oncologists to detect emotional disturbances in cancer patients (ie, depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders). RESULTS: A total of 30 oncologists from 3 Southern European countries (Italy, Portugal, and Spain) participated in the workshop. The training course was well accepted by most participants who expressed general satisfaction and a positive subjective perception of the utility of the course for clinical practice. Of the total participants, 28 physicians (93.3%) thought that had they been exposed to this material sooner, they would have incorporated the techniques received in the workshop into their practices; 2 participants stated they would likely have done so. Half of the doctors (n = 15) believed that their clinical communication techniques were improved by participating in the workshop, and the remaining half thought that their abilities to communicate with cancer patients had improved. CONCLUSIONS: This model is a feasible approach for oncologists and is easily applicable to various oncology settings. Further studies will demonstrate the effectiveness of this method for improving oncologists skills in recognizing emotional disorders in their patients with cancer

    Holographic Noncommutativity

We examine noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories using magnetically and electrically deformed supergravity duals. The duals are near horizon regions of Dp-brane bound state solutions which are obtained by using O(p+1,p+1) transformations of Dp-branes. The action of the T-duality group implies that the noncommutativity parameter is constant along holographic RG-flows. The moduli of the noncommutative theory, i.e., the open string metric and coupling constant, as well as the zero-force condition are shown to be invariant under the O(p+1,p+1) transformation, i.e., deformation independent. We find sufficient conditions, including zero force and constant dilaton in the ISO(3,1)-invariant D3 brane solution, for exact S-duality between noncommutative Yang-Mills and open string theories. These results are used to construct noncommutative field and string theories with N=1 supersymmetry from the T^(1,1) and Pilch-Warner solutions. The latter has a non-trivial zero-force condition due to the warping.Comment: latex, 40 pp. v2: minor changes, one ref. added. v3: corrections in eqs. 27 and 7

Talent management: The role of learning orientation in fostering dynamic organizational capabilities

    Get PDF
In the current conjuncture, companies can recover human capital, and developing development capabilities at the human and organizational levels has become a huge challenge. The present research aims to identify and analyze what shapes management and the exercise of competence management in the dynamic capabilities of management. Given this, it is essential to conceptualize talent, and dynamic capabilities and emphasize their importance in organizations. The study is characterized as descriptive research with an approach. In research, which has the technical methodology as a form of investigation, there is a need for the research problem to be in the form of a question, interrogation, or as a form of objective, affirmation. From the results, it can be seen that talents favor the development of capabilities. From the data, there must be a strong incentive to do things right, as well as the positive development of large companies and, consequently, the development of dynamic forces and, consequently, the development of the company's dynamic capabilities. which are crucial to organizational success.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Stochastic semiclassical fluctuations in Minkowski spacetime

    Get PDF
The semiclassical Einstein-Langevin equations which describe the dynamics of stochastic perturbations of the metric induced by quantum stress-energy fluctuations of matter fields in a given state are considered on the background of the ground state of semiclassical gravity, namely, Minkowski spacetime and a scalar field in its vacuum state. The relevant equations are explicitly derived for massless and massive fields arbitrarily coupled to the curvature. In doing so, some semiclassical results, such as the expectation value of the stress-energy tensor to linear order in the metric perturbations and particle creation effects, are obtained. We then solve the equations and compute the two-point correlation functions for the linearized Einstein tensor and for the metric perturbations. In the conformal field case, explicit results are obtained. These results hint that gravitational fluctuations in stochastic semiclassical gravity have a ``non-perturbative'' behavior in some characteristic correlation lengths.Comment: 28 pages, RevTeX, no figure
