This report describes the investigation of technical possibilities for increasing the density of calcium silicate units by adding heavy aggregate. Using diabase, basalt, greywacke and limestone in various particle sizes, calcium silicate test units were prepared in the calcium silicate research laboratory and examined in view of their properties as a building material. This research has brought us the following results: by adding the above mentioned heavy aggregate the unit density can be increased, in some cases considerably. As the unit density is raised a higher compressive strength can be achieved. One remarkable influence on properties of laboratory specimens is given by the chosen force of compression: when this force of compression is increased, the unit density is raised and, with it, the unit compressive strength. The report includes suggestions for calculating the costs for raw materials where heavy aggregate is used. Any application of the findings of this research work on the production method in calcium silicate factories must first be collaborated by tests which take into consideration the specific factory situation. The results of this research are specific and only valid under laboratory conditions unless further analyses are carried out. When using heavy aggregate the phase separation behaviour and the change of colour have to be considered carefully.
