Detection of Minimum-Ionizing Particles and Nuclear Counter Effect with Pure BGO and BSO Crystals with Photodiode Read-out
Long BGO (Bismuth Germanate) and BSO (Bismuth Silicate) crystals coupled with
silicon photodiodes have been used to detect minimum-ionizing particles(MIP).
With a low noise amplifier customized for this purpose, the crystals can detect
MIPs with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. The NCE(Nuclear Counter Effect}
is also clearly observed and measured. Effect of full and partial wrapping of a

Generarized Cubic Model for BaTiO-like Ferroelectric Substance
We propose an order-disorder type microscopic model for BaTiO-like
Ferroelectric Substance. Our model has three phase transitions and four phases.
The symmetry and directions of the polarizations of the ordered phases agree
with the experimental results of BaTiO. The intermediate phases in our
model are known as an incompletely ordered phase, which appears in a

Role of charge carriers for ferromagnetism in cobalt-doped rutile TiO2
Electric and magnetic properties of a high temperature ferromagnetic oxide
semiconductor, cobalt-doped rutile TiO2, are summarized. The cobalt-doped
rutile TiO2 epitaxial thin films with different electron densities and cobalt
contents were grown on r-sapphire substrates with laser molecular beam epitaxy.
Results of magnetization, magnetic circular dichroism, and anomalous Hall
effect measurements were examined for samples with systematically varied
electron densities and cobalt contents. The samples with high electron
densities and cobalt contents show the high temperature ferromagnetism,
suggesting that charge carriers induce the ferromagnetism.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure
Critical Casimir effect and wetting by helium mixtures
We have measured the contact angle of the interface of phase-separated
He-He mixtures against a sapphire window. We have found that this
angle is finite and does not tend to zero when the temperature approaches
, the temperature of the tri-critical point. On the contrary, it increases
with temperature. This behavior is a remarkable exception to what is generally
observed near critical points, i.e. "critical point wetting''. We propose that
it is a consequence of the "critical Casimir effect'' which leads to an
effective attraction of the He-He interface by the sapphire near

Recovery of state-specific potential of molecular motor from single-molecule trajectory
We have developed a novel method to evaluate the potential profile of a
molecular motor at each chemical state from only the probe's trajectory and
applied it to a rotary molecular motor F-ATPase. By using this method, we
could also obtain the information regarding the mechanochemical coupling and
energetics. We demonstrate that the position-dependent transition of the
chemical states is the key feature for the highly efficient free-energy

A q-analogue of gl_3 hierarchy and q-Painleve VI
A q-analogue of the gl_3 Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchy is proposed as a
reduction of the q-KP hierarchy. Applying a similarity reduction and a
q-Laplace transformation to the hierarchy, one can obtain the q-Painleve VI

Dynamics of fullerene coalescence
Fullerene coalescence experimentally found in fullerene-embedded single-wall
nanotubes under electron-beam irradiation or heat treatment is simulated by
minimizing the classical action for many atom systems. The dynamical trajectory
for forming a (5,5) C nanocapsule from two C fullerene molecules
consists of thermal motions around potential basins and ten successive
Stone-Wales-type bond rotations after the initial cage-opening process for
which energy cost is about 8 eV. Dynamical paths for forming large-diameter
nanocapsules with (10,0), (6,6), and (12,0) chiral indexes have more bond

Hard X-ray Luminosities of Multinuclei Infrared Luminous Galaxies Showing a Radio/Far-Infrared Excess
We report the results of hard X-ray observations of four multinuclei merging
infrared luminous galaxies (IRLGs). We selected these four sources for their
excess of radio to far-infrared luminosity ratio compared with starburst
galaxies. This excess suggests that activity associated with a supermassive
black hole (SMBH) contributes strongly to the IRLGs' bolometric luminosities.
Although we expect strong hard X-ray emission from the SMBH-driven activity,
the radio-excess multinuclei merging IRLGs show considerably smaller hard X-ray
luminosities relative to far-infrared (40500 m) and infrared (81000
m) luminosities than active galactic nuclei (AGNs) showing a similar
radio-excess. This result may demonstrate that emission in the hard X-ray
region from SMBH-driven activity in the multinuclei merging IRLGs is severely
suppressed compared to a typical spectral energy distribution of SMBH-driven
activity in AGNs. If this is a common property of merging IRLGs, without its
correction, hard X-ray observations underestimate the contribution of
SMBH-driven activity to the bolometric luminosities of merging IRLGs.Comment: 25 pages of text, 4 figures, aaspp4.sty, Astrophysical Journal, in
