    Model of the Quark Mixing Matrix

    The structure of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix is analyzed from the standpoint of a composite model. A model is constructed with three families of quarks, by taking tensor products of sufficient numbers of spin-1/2 representations and imagining the dominant terms in the mass matrix to arise from spin-spin interactions. Generic results then obtained include the familiar relation Vus=(md/ms)1/2(mu/mc)1/2|V_{us}| = (m_d/m_s)^{1/2} - (m_u/m_c)^{1/2}, and a less frequently seen relation Vcb=2[(ms/mb)(mc/mt)]|V_{cb}| = \sqrt{2} [(m_s/m_b) - (m_c/m_t)]. The magnitudes of VubV_{ub} and VtdV_{td} come out naturally to be of the right order. The phase in the CKM matrix can be put in by hand, but its origin remains obscure.Comment: Presented by Mihir P.     Determination of the Michel Parameters rho, xi, and delta in tau-Lepton Decays with tau --> rho nu Tags

    Using the ARGUS detector at the e+ee^+ e^- storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the Michel parameters ρ\rho, ξ\xi, and ξδ\xi\delta for τ±l±ννˉ\tau^{\pm}\to l^{\pm} \nu\bar\nu decays in τ\tau-pair events produced at center of mass energies in the region of the Υ\Upsilon resonances. Using τρν\tau^\mp \to \rho^\mp \nu as spin analyzing tags, we find ρe=0.68±0.04±0.08\rho_{e}=0.68\pm 0.04 \pm 0.08, ξe=1.12±0.20±0.09\xi_{e}= 1.12 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.09, ξδe=0.57±0.14±0.07\xi\delta_{e}= 0.57 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07, ρμ=0.69±0.06±0.08\rho_{\mu}= 0.69 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.08, ξμ=1.25±0.27±0.14\xi_{\mu}= 1.25 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.14 and ξδμ=0.72±0.18±0.10\xi\delta_{\mu}= 0.72 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.10.     Study of 3-prong Hadronic τ\tau Decays with Charged Kaons

    Using a sample of 4.7/fb integrated luminosity accumulated with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR), we have measured the branching fractions of the tau lepton into Kh+πντK^- h^+ \pi^- \nu_\tau and KK+πντK^- K^+ \pi^- \nu_\tau relative to hh+hντ;Kh+ππ0ντh^- h^+ h^- \nu_\tau; K^- h^+ \pi^- \pi^0\nu_\tau and KK+ππ0ντK^- K^+ \pi^- \pi^0\nu_\tau relative to hh+hπ0ντh^- h^+ h^- \pi^0 \nu_\tau. The relative branching fractions are: (5.16+-0.20+-0.50)*10210^{-2}, (1.52+-0.14+-0.29)*10210^{-2}, (2.54+-0.44+-0.39)*10210^{-2} and <0.0154<0.0154 at 95% C.L., respectively. Coupled with additional experimental information, we use our results to extract information on the structure of three-prong tau decays to charged kaons.Comment: 16 pages postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Tau Neutrino Helicity from h±h^{\pm} Energy Correlations

    We report a measurement of the magnitude of the tau neutrino helicity from tau-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each tau undergoes the decay tau -> h nu, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding |xi| = 2*|h_nu| = 1.03 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 11 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Observation of Exclusive Two-Body B Decays to Kaons and Pions

    We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of B mesons into the final states ππ\pi\pi, KπK \pi, and KKKK. Using 3.3 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected with the CLEO-II detector, we have made the first observation of the decays B0K+πB^0\to K^+\pi^-, B+K0π+B^+\to K^0\pi^+, and the sum of B+π+π0B^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0 and B+K+π0B^+ \to K^+\pi^0 decays (an average over charge-conjugate states is always implied).     Observation of Radiative Leptonic Decay of the Tau Lepton

    Using 4.68 fb^{-1} of e^+e^- annihilation data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) we have studied tau radiative decays tau -> mu nu nu gamma and tau -> e nu nu gamma. For a 10 MeV minimum photon energy in the tau rest frame, the branching fraction of radiative tau decay to a muon or electron is measured to be (3.61+-0.16+-0.35)*10^{-3} or (1.75+-0.06+-0.17)*10^{-2}, respectively.     Using a data sample with integrated luminosity of about 3.9 fb^{-1} collected in e+ e- annihilation with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the branching ratios for the decay modes Ds -> (eta, eta') pi and Ds -> (eta, eta') rho relative to Ds -> phi pi. These decay modes are among the most common hadronic decays of the Ds's and can be related by factorization to the semileptonic decays Ds -> (eta,eta') l nu. The results obtained are compared with previous CLEO results and with the branching ratios measured for the related semileptonic decays.     Measurements of the Mass, total Width and Two-Photon Partila Width of the ηc\eta_{c} Meson

    Using 13.4 fb1fb^{-1} of data collected with the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have observed 300 events for the two-photon production of ground-state pseudo-scalar charmonium in the decay ηc\eta_c -> KSKπ±K_S K^{\mp} \pi^{\pm}. We have measured the ηc\eta_c mass to be (2980.4 +- 2.3 (stat) +- 0.6 (sys)) MeV and its full width as (27.0 +- 5.8 (stat) +- 1.4 (sys)) MeV. We have determined the two-photon partial width of the ηc\eta_c meson to be (7.6 +- 0.8 (stat) +- 0.4 (sys) +- 2.3 (br)) keV, with the last uncertainty associated with the decay branching fraction.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Weak Decays Beyond Leading Logarithms

    We review the present status of QCD corrections to weak decays beyond the leading logarithmic approximation including particle-antiparticle mixing and rare and CP violating decays. After presenting the basic formalism for these calculations we discuss in detail the effective hamiltonians for all decays for which the next-to-leading corrections are known. Subsequently, we present the phenomenological implications of these calculations. In particular we update the values of various parameters and we incorporate new information on m_t in view of the recent top quark discovery. One of the central issues in our review are the theoretical uncertainties related to renormalization scale ambiguities which are substantially reduced by including next-to-leading order corrections.     Measurement of Br(D0Kπ+)Br(D^{0}\to K^{-}\pi^{+}) using Partila Reconstruction of BˉD+Xνˉ\bar{B}\to D^{*+}X\ell^{-}\bar{\nu}

    We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D0>Kpi+D^0 -> K^- pi^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain Bbar>D+XlnubarBbar -> D^{*+} X l^- nubar , D+>D0pi+D^{*+} -> D^0 pi^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D+D^{*+} are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined Br(D0>Kpi+)=[3.81+0.15(stat.)+0.16(syst.)]Br(D^0 -> K^- pi^+)= [3.81 +- 0.15(stat.) +- 0.16(syst.)]%.Comment: 10 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
