Noncontact measurement of high-temperature surface tension and viscosity of bulk metallic glass-forming alloys using the drop oscillation technique

    Get PDF
High-temperature surface tension and viscosities for five bulk metallic glass-forming alloys with widely different glass-forming abilities are measured. The measurements are carried out in a high-vacuum electrostatic levitator using the drop oscillation technique. The surface tension follows proportional mathematical addition of pure components' surface tension except when some of the constituent elements have much lower surface tension. In such cases, there is surface segregation of the low surface tension elements. These alloys are found to have orders of magnitude higher viscosity at their melting points compared to the constituent metals. Among the bulk glass-forming alloys, the better glass former has a higher melting-temperature viscosity, which demonstrates that high-temperature viscosity has a pronounced influence on glass-forming ability. Correlations between surface tension and viscosity are also investigated

Next-to-leading Order QCD Corrections to A_TT for Single-Inclusive Hadron Production

We report on a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the partonic cross sections contributing to single-inclusive high-p_T hadron production in collisions of transversely polarized hadrons. We give some predictions for the double spin asymmetry A_TT^\pi for the proposed experiments at RHIC and at the GSI.Comment: Presented at DIS 2005, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, April 27-May 1, 200

    Double-transverse spin asymmetries at NLO

We report on a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section and the spin asymmetry for isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely polarized protons. Corresponding measurements may be used at RHIC to determine the transversity parton distributions of the proton.Comment: 3 pages, LaTeX, 1 figure as eps file. Invited talk presented by W. Electrostatic contribution to DNA condensation - application of 'energy minimization' in a simple model in strong Coulomb coupling regime

Bending of DNA from a straight rod to a circular form in presence of any of the mono-, di-, tri- or tetravalent counterions has been simulated in strong Coulomb coupling environment employing a previously developed energy minimization simulation technique. The inherent characteristics of the simulation technique allow monitoring the required electrostatic contribution to the bending. The curvature of the bending has been found to play crucial roles in facilitating electrostatic attractive potential energy. The total electrostatic potential energy has been found to decrease with bending which indicates that bending a straight DNA to a circular form or to a toroidal form in presence of neutralizing counterions is energetically favorable and practically is a spontaneous phenomenon

Benefits of pollution monitoring technology for greenhouse gas offset markets

Environmental economists have shown that tradable emission permit markets can reduce the costs to society of pollution reduction. However, when emissions are difficult to monitor and verify, offset credits from pollution reductions may be subject to price discounts that reduce social welfare. In this paper, we estimate the extent to which social welfare could be improved by using new technology to increase the accuracy with which pollution flows from agricultural fields can be monitored. We use a hypothetical case study of a situation in which farmers can reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Midwest agricultural land parcels and sell the resulting offset permits in a greenhouse gas tradable permit market. We simulate market outcomes with and without an inexpensive technology that increases the accuracy of emission estimates, reduces the discount to which agricultural offset permits are subject, and improves the performance of tradable permit system. We find that the benefits from such technology range as high as $138 for a 100 acre field if N2O emissions are an exponential function of nitrogen application rates. However, variation in the benefits to farmers of eliminating price discounts may mean efficient technology adoption is not uniform across space.tradable permit, greenhouse gases, uncertainty, technology

Overheating threshold and its effect on time–temperature-transformation diagrams of zirconium based bulk metallic glasses

    Get PDF
A pronounced effect of overheating is observed on the crystallization behavior for the three zirconium-based bulk metallic glasses: Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5, Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5, and Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5. A threshold overheating temperature is found for each of the three alloys, above which there is a drastic increase in the undercooling level and the crystallization times. Time–temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams were measured for the three alloys by overheating above their respective threshold temperatures. The TTT curves for Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 and Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5 are very similar in shape and scale with their respective glass transition temperatures, suggesting that system-specific properties do not play a crucial role in defining crystallization kinetics in these alloys. The critical cooling rates to vitrify the alloys as determined from the TTT curves are about 2 K/s for Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 and 10 K/s for Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5. The measurements were conducted in a high-vacuum electrostatic levitator

    Bosonic p-brane and A--D--M decomposition

A master action for the bosonic p-brane, interpolating between the Nambu--Goto and Polyakov formalisms, is discussed. The fundamental arbitrariness of extended structures (p-brane) embeded in space time manifold has been exploited to build an independent metric in the brane world volume. The cosmological term for the generic case follows naturally in the scheme. The dynamics of the structure leads to a natural emergence of the A--D--M like split of this world volume. The role of the gauge symmetries vis-\`{a}-vis reparametrization symmetries is analyzed by a constrained Hamiltonian approach.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, Title changed, paper extended, references added, this version is to appear in Phys.
