    On the Backbending Mechanism of 48^{48}Cr

    The mechanism of backbending in 48^{48}Cr is investigated in terms of the Projected Shell Model and the Generator Coordinate Method. It is shown that both methods are reasonable shell model truncation schemes. These two quite different quantum mechanical approaches lead to a similar conclusion that the backbending is due to a band crossing involving an excited band which is built on simultaneously broken neutron and proton pairs in the ``intruder'' subshell f7/2f_{7/2}. It is pointed out that this type of band crossing is usually known to cause the second backbending in rare-earth nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

    A pilot survey of the central colony of the Waved Albatross Phoebastria irrorata on Española Island

    Española Island is the main breeding site of the Waved Albatross Phoebastria irrorata but little is known of the nesting populations other than those at Punta Cevallos and Punta SuĂĄrez. In May 2008 we located nesting albatrosses from nearly the top of the island to the south coast (the “Central Colony”), including in areas not previously reported. We found evidence of a strong interaction between the distribution of woody vegetation and nesting albatrosses. Many albatrosses nest in areas too overgrown to fly into, and walk long distances to and from more open take-off and landing points. Tortoises facilitate albatross movement and nesting by creating trails that albatrosses use. The need remains for a comprehensive estimate of albatross population size and distribution that includes both coastal and inland populations

    Scaling and data collapse for the mean exit time of asset prices

    We study theoretical and empirical aspects of the mean exit time of financial time series. The theoretical modeling is done within the framework of continuous time random walk. We empirically verify that the mean exit time follows a quadratic scaling law and it has associated a pre-factor which is specific to the analyzed stock. We perform a series of statistical tests to determine which kind of correlation are responsible for this specificity. The main contribution is associated with the autocorrelation property of stock returns. We introduce and solve analytically both a two-state and a three-state Markov chain models. The analytical results obtained with the two-state Markov chain model allows us to obtain a data collapse of the 20 measured MET profiles in a single master curve.Comment: REVTeX 4, 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, submitted for publicatio

    Critical Collapse of an Ultrarelativistic Fluid in the Γ→1\Gamma\to 1 Limit

    In this paper we investigate the critical collapse of an ultrarelativistic perfect fluid with the equation of state P=(Γ−1)ρP=(\Gamma-1)\rho in the limit of Γ→1\Gamma\to 1. We calculate the limiting continuously self similar (CSS) solution and the limiting scaling exponent by exploiting self-similarity of the solution. We also solve the complete set of equations governing the gravitational collapse numerically for (Γ−1)=10−2,...,10−6(\Gamma-1) = 10^{-2},...,10^{-6} and compare them with the CSS solutions. We also investigate the supercritical regime and discuss the hypothesis of naked singularity formation in a generic gravitational collapse. The numerical calculations make use of advanced methods such as high resolution shock capturing evolution scheme for the matter evolution, adaptive mesh refinement, and quadruple precision arithmetic. The treatment of vacuum is also non standard. We were able to tune the critical parameter up to 30 significant digits and to calculate the scaling exponents accurately. The numerical results agree very well with those calculated using the CSS ansatz. The analysis of the collapse in the supercritical regime supports the hypothesis of the existence of naked singularities formed during a generic gravitational collapse.Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures, revised version, added new results of investigation of a supercritical collapse and the existence of naked singularities in generic gravitational collaps

    Secured Transactions Law Reform in Japan: Japan Business Credit Project Assessment of Interviews and Tentative Policy Proposals

    This article summarizes key findings from the Japan Business Credit Project (JBCP), which involved more than 30 semi-structured interviews conducted in Japan from 2016 through 2018. It was inspired by important and previously unexplored questions concerning secured financing of movables (business equipment and inventory) and claims (receivables)—“asset-based lending” or “ABL.” Why is the use of ABL in Japan so limited? What are the principal obstacles and disincentives to the use of ABL in Japan? The interviews were primarily with staff of banks, but also included those of government officials and regulators, academics, and law practitioners. The article proposes reforms of Japanese secured transactions law that would address several prevailing problems with ABL. The reforms would move Japanese law toward the modern principles that are epitomized by Article 9 of the UCC in the United States and the UNCITRAL Model Law on Secured Transactions. These proposals also could materially improve Japan’s standings in the World Bank Group Doing Business Rankings. Three committees with government connections recently have been studying secured transactions law reforms in Japan. We expect that the government will move to a more formal stage of considering reforms in the near future. We are optimistic that the article will be influential on the substance and ultimate enactment of law reforms. Our research illuminates the stark contrast between the situation in Japan and the modern principles of secured transactions law embodied in the UNCITRAL Model Law, which is designed to enhance access to credit through ABL. Finally, the article identifies important new insights for secured transactions law reforms, not only in Japan but in other jurisdictions. These insights are illuminating as well for future business law reforms more generally. In particular, the article explains the value and utility of qualitative empirical research such as the JBCP for the process of law reform

    We have analyzed T cell receptor alpha-chain gene configuration using three genomic joining (J) region probes in 64 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). 11 out of 18 T-ALLs were T3 positive; alpha-chain gene rearrangements were demonstrated in only two of 18, indicating that the majority of T-ALLs would have rearrangements involving J alpha segments located upstream of these probes. In contrast, 15 out of 46 B-precursor ALLs showed rearrangements of the alpha-chain gene and J alpha segments located approximately 20-30 kb upstream of the constant region were involved in 13 of these patients. Nine of 15 B-precursor ALLs with rearranged alpha-chain genes had rearrangements of both gamma- and beta-chain genes, whereas the remaining six had no rearrangements of gamma- and beta-chain genes. These findings indicated that alpha-chain gene rearrangement is not specific for T lineage cells and gamma- and/or beta-chain gene rearrangement does not appear essential for alpha-chain gene rearrangement, at least in B-precursor leukemic cells

    A scenario is presented, based on renormalization group (linear perturbation) ideas, which can explain the self-similarity and scaling observed in a numerical study of gravitational collapse of radiation fluid. In particular, it is shown that the critical exponent ÎČ\beta and the largest Lyapunov exponent Re Îș{\rm Re\, } \kappa of the perturbation is related by ÎČ=(Re Îș)−1\beta= ({\rm Re\, } \kappa) ^{-1}. We find the relevant perturbation mode numerically, and obtain a fairly accurate value of the critical exponent ÎČ≃0.3558019\beta \simeq 0.3558019, also in agreement with that obtained in numerical simulation.Comment: 4 pages in ReVTeX, 2 uuencoded eps figures, uses BoxedEPSF.te

    Modeling the series of (n x 2) Si-rich reconstructions of beta-SiC(001): a prospective atomic wire?

    We perform ab initio plane wave supercell density functional calculations on three candidate models of the (3 x 2) reconstruction of the beta-SiC(001) surface. We find that the two-adlayer asymmetric-dimer model (TAADM) is unambiguously favored for all reasonable values of Si chemical potential. We then use structures derived from the TAADM parent to model the silicon lines that are observed when the (3 x 2) reconstruction is annealed (the (n x 2) series of reconstructions), using a tight-binding method. We find that as we increase n, and so separate the lines, a structural transition occurs in which the top addimer of the line flattens. We also find that associated with the separation of the lines is a large decrease in the HOMO-LUMO gap, and that the HOMO state becomes quasi-one-dimensional. These properties are qualititatively and quantitatively different from the electronic properties of the original (3 x 2) reconstruction.Comment: 22 pages, including 6 EPS figure

    Multi-Phonon Îł\gamma-Vibrational Bands and the Triaxial Projected Shell Model

    We present a fully quantum-mechanical, microscopic, unified treatment of ground-state band and multi-phonon γ\gamma-vibrational bands using shell model diagonalization with the triaxial projected shell model. The results agree very well with data on the g- and γ\gamma-band spectra in 156−170^{156-170}Er, as well as with recently measured 4+4^+ 2-phonon γ\gamma-bandhead energies in 166^{166}Er and 168^{168}Er.
