    Jet broadening in deeply inelastic scattering

    In deeply inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering (DIS), the average jet transverse momentum is broadened because of the multiple scattering in the nuclear medium. The size of jet broadening is proportional to the multi-parton correlation functions inside nuclei. We show that at leading order, jet broadening in DIS and nulcear enhancement in di-jet momentum imbalance and Drell-Yan share the same four-parton correlation functions. We argue that jet broadening in DIS provide an indenpendent measurement of the four-parton correlation functions and a test of QCD treatment of multiple scattering.Comment: Latex, 18 pages, five figures; a few typos were correcte

    A Low Profile, Ultra-Lightweight, High Efficient Circularly-Polarized Antenna Array for Ku Band Satellite Applications

    © 2013 IEEE. A novel low-profile, ultra-lightweight, high-efficient circularly polarized (CP) planar patch antenna array is reported for Ku-band satellite TV reception applications. The basic radiating element of the antenna array is realized by a 2×22 \times 2 corner-removed patch subarray. This 2×22 \times 2 patch subarray is center-fed by a rectangular coupling aperture etched on the top surface of a substrate-integrated-waveguide cavity. A novel compact sequential rotation feeding technique is adopted to broaden the operating bandwidth without occupying additional area. The 2×22 \times 2 CP subarray can be easily scaled up for large size antenna arrays due to its single layer feeding network and compact radiating elements. In addition, the patch radiators are printed on a thin layer of Polyimide film backed by a piece of supporting foam to minimize the entire weight. To verify the design concept, a 96-element ( 16×616 \times 6 ) CP patch array was fabricated and tested. Measured results show that the operating bandwidth is 700 MHz from 11.55 to 12.25 GHz. The gain is stable across the operating bandwidth with a realized peak gain of 26.4 dBic. The height of the antenna is 0.05 λ00.05~\lambda {0} and the total weight is only 66.5 g. It serves as an excellent candidate for Ku-band satellite applications

    Under-water molecular signalling : a hidden transmitter and absent receivers problem

    Wave-based signals have been successful in reliably and efficiently transferring data between two or more well defined points (e.g., known location area). However, it is challenged when the transmitter is hidden and the receivers are absent. Essentially, the transmitter and the receivers have no location knowledge of each other. We demonstrate that unlike wave-based transmissions, the total molecular energy doesn’t monotonically degrade as a function of time. This paper uses a bio-inspired method of communicating data from a hidden transmitter to a group of absent receivers. A specialized molecular communication system is designed, including how to embed vital location information in the structure of a heterogeneous biochemical molecule. Like message in a bottle, there is a growing probability of receiving the location message over a period of several years. The only caveat is that there is an initial delay of a few hours to days, depending on the proximity of the rescue team to the crash site. This will provide an attractive alternative to current wave-based communications for delay-tolerant crash recovery

    Transient simulation and analysis for saturated core high temperature superconducting fault current limiter

    In this paper, the transient performance of a magnetic core fault current limiter (FCL) saturated by high temperature superconducting (HTS) dc bias winding is investigated by using both 3-D field-circuit coupled simulation and magnetic circuit analysis. A high voltage is induced on the dc HTS winding during the fault current state. The induced voltage is computed and a short circuit coil for the reduction of induced voltage is studied. The numerical computations are verified by the experiment results on an FCL prototype. © 2007 IEEE

    Role of the nonperturbative input in QCD resummed Drell-Yan QTQ_T-distributions

    We analyze the role of the nonperturbative input in the Collins, Soper, and Sterman (CSS)'s bb-space QCD resummation formalism for Drell-Yan transverse momentum (QTQ_T) distributions, and investigate the predictive power of the CSS formalism. We find that the predictive power of the CSS formalism has a strong dependence on the collision energy S\sqrt{S} in addition to its well-known Q2Q^2 dependence, and the S\sqrt{S} dependence improves the predictive power at collider energies. We show that a reliable extrapolation from perturbatively resummed bb-space distributions to the nonperturbative large bb region is necessary to ensure the correct QTQ_T distributions. By adding power corrections to the renormalization group equations in the CSS formalism, we derive a new extrapolation formalism. We demonstrate that at collider energies, the CSS resummation formalism plus our extrapolation has an excellent predictive power for WW and ZZ production at all transverse momenta QTQQ_T\le Q. We also show that the bb-space resummed QTQ_T distributions provide a good description of Drell-Yan data at fixed target energies.Comment: Latex, 43 pages including 15 figures; typos were correcte

    Analysis of transient overvoltage in 220 kV saturated core HTS FCL

    Saturated Core High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Fault Current Limiter (FCL) is one kind of limiters that can work effectively on short-circuit current limitation. In this paper, an equivalent circuit model depending on ac coil of HTS FCL is built for voltage distribution analysis under transient overvoltage. The equivalent circuit components, such as the capacitances and inductances, are calculated by using finite element method. The voltage distribution and oscillation analysis of ac coil may benefit to the insulation design of HTS FCL. © 2011 IEEE

    A New Compact and High Gain Circularly-Polarized Slot Antenna Array for Ku-Band Mobile Satellite TV Reception

A compact and high-gain SIW-fed circularly polarized (CP) slot-antenna array with a stacked feed structure is presented for the application of Ku-band high-data-rate satellite communications. First, a novel probe-fed SIW cavity with four slots etched on the top surface is proposed as a high-gain radiating element for the array. The four slots in the cavity act as a 2\times2 array, and its directivity is 2.15 and 1.43 dB greater than that of the cavity-backed antenna of the same size using ring slot and split ring slot, respectively. Second, a compact 1-4 SIW power divider is designed for exciting a subarray. Third, the 2\times2 subarray is further expanded to an 8\times16 array by adopting an additional layer of 1-32 SIW feeding network to meet the gain requirement of the Ku-band mobile satellite TV reception. Finally, experiments are carried out to verify the designed prototypes. Measured results show that proposed 128-element array has a relative impedance bandwidth of 4.8% (11.84 to 12.42 GHz), AR bandwidth of 130 MHz (12.01 to 12.14 GHz), and a peak gain of 26.8 dBic at 12.06 GHz. Owing to the simple feeding networks and the compact radiating element, the antenna has a compact size of 6.04\lambda 0 \times 11.96\lambda 0 \times 0.1\lambda 0. Experimental results show that the proposed CP antenna array is suitable for applications of Ku-band mobile satellite TV reception
