Magnetism, X-rays, and Accretion Rates in WD 1145+017 and other Polluted White Dwarf Systems
This paper reports circular spectropolarimetry and X-ray observations of
several polluted white dwarfs including WD 1145+017, with the aim to constrain
the behavior of disk material and instantaneous accretion rates in these
evolved planetary systems. Two stars with previously observed Zeeman splitting,
WD 0322-019 and WD 2105-820, are detected above 5 sigma and > 1 kG, while
WD 1145+017, WD 1929+011, and WD 2326+049 yield (null) detections below this
minimum level of confidence. For these latter three stars, high-resolution
spectra and atmospheric modeling are used to obtain limits on magnetic field
strengths via the absence of Zeeman splitting, finding B* < 20 kG based on data
with resolving power R near 40 000. An analytical framework is presented for
bulk Earth composition material falling onto the magnetic polar regions of
white dwarfs, where X-rays and cyclotron radiation may contribute to accretion
luminosity. This analysis is applied to X-ray data for WD 1145+017, WD
1729+371, and WD 2326+049, and the upper bound count rates are modeled with
spectra for a range of plasma kT = 1 - 10 keV in both the magnetic and
non-magnetic accretion regimes. The results for all three stars are consistent
with a typical dusty white dwarf in a steady-state at 1e8 - 1e9 g/s. In
particular, the non-magnetic limits for WD 1145+017 are found to be well below
previous estimates of up to 1e12 g/s, and likely below 1e10 g/s, thus
suggesting the star-disk system may be average in its evolutionary state, and

An XMM-Newton observation of the nova-like variable UX UMa: spatially and spectrally resolved two-component X-ray emission
In the optical and ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, UX
Ursae Majoris is a deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable. However, no soft
X-ray eclipse was detected in ROSAT observations. We have obtained a 38 ksec
XMM-Newton observation to further constrain the origin of the X-rays. The
combination of spectral and timing information allows us to identify two
components in the X-ray emission of the system. The soft component, dominant
below photon energies of 2 keV, can be fitted with a multi-temperature plasma
model and is uneclipsed. The hard component, dominant above 3 keV, can be
fitted with a kT ~ 5 keV plasma model and appears to be deeply eclipsed. We
suggest that the most likely source of the hard X-ray emission in UX UMa, and
other systems in high mass transfer states, is the boundary layer.Comment: To appear in MNRAS Letter

Neuronal O-GlcNAcylation Improves Cognitive Function in the Aged Mouse Brain.
Mounting evidence in animal models indicates potential for rejuvenation of cellular and cognitive functions in the aging brain. However, the ability to utilize this potential is predicated on identifying molecular targets that reverse the effects of aging in vulnerable regions of the brain, such as the hippocampus. The dynamic post-translational modification O-linked N-Acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) has emerged as an attractive target for regulating aging-specific synaptic alterations as well as neurodegeneration. While speculation exists about the role of O-GlcNAc in neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease, its role in physiological brain aging remains largely unexplored. Here, we report that countering age-related decreased O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) expression and O-GlcNAcylation ameliorates cognitive impairments in aged mice. Mimicking an aged condition in young adults by abrogating OGT, using a temporally controlled neuron-specific conditional knockout mouse model, recapitulated cellular and cognitive features of brain aging. Conversely, overexpressing OGT in mature hippocampal neurons using a viral-mediated approach enhanced associative fear memory in young adult mice. Excitingly, in aged mice overexpressing neuronal OGT in the aged hippocampus rescued in part age-related impairments in spatial learning and memory as well as associative fear memory. Applications technology satellite particle detection experiment for measuring energy spectra of earth magnetic fiel
g-on Mean Field Theory of the t-J Model
Implication of our recent proposal [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 65 (1996) 687] to
treat large-amplitude gauge-field fluctuations around the slave-boson
mean-field theory for the t-J model has been explored in detail. By attaching
gauge flux to spinons and holons and then treating them as free g-on's which
respect the time-reversal symmetry, the optimum exclusion (g) and exchange (\a)
statistics have been determined in the plane of doping rate and temperature.
Two different relations between \a and g have been investigated, namely g=|\a|
(Case1) and g=|\a|(2-|\a|) (Case2). The results indicate that slave fermion is
favored at low doping while slave boson at high doping. For two dimension, in
Case1 intermediate statistics are found in between, while in Case2 no
intermediate statistics are found. The consequences of varying the
dimensionality and strength of J have been studied also. The latter has no
qualitative effect for both cases, while the former has a profound effect in

Thermodynamically consistent equilibrium properties of normal-liquid Helium-3
The high-precision data for the specific heat C_{V}(T,V) of normal-liquid
Helium-3 obtained by Greywall, taken together with the molar volume V(T_0,P) at
one temperature T_0, are shown to contain the complete thermodynamic
information about this phase in zero magnetic field. This enables us to
calculate the T and P dependence of all equilibrium properties of normal-liquid
Helium-3 in a thermodynamically consistent way for a wide range of parameters.
The results for the entropy S(T,P), specific heat at constant pressure
C_P(T,P), molar volume V(T,P), compressibility kappa(T,P), and thermal
expansion coefficient alpha(T,P) are collected in the form of figures and
tables. This provides the first complete set of thermodynamically consistent
values of the equilibrium quantities of normal-liquid Helium-3. We find, for
example, that alpha(T,P) has a surprisingly intricate pressure dependence at
low temperatures, and that the curves alpha(T,P) vs T do not cross at one
single temperature for all pressures, in contrast to the curves presented in
the comprehensive survey of helium by Wilks.

SuperWASP: Wide Angle Search for Planets
SuperWASP is a fully robotic, ultra-wide angle survey for planetary transits.
Currently under construction, it will consist of 5 cameras, each monitoring a
9.5 x 9.5 deg field of view. The Torus mount and enclosure will be fully
automated and linked to a built-in weather station. We aim to begin

Large-Amplitude Ultraviolet Variations in the RR Lyrae Star ROTSE-I J143753.84+345924.8
The NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite has obtained
simultaneous near and far ultraviolet light curves of the ROTSE-I Catalog RR
Lyrae ab-type variable star J143753.84+345924.8. A series of 38 GALEX Deep
Imaging Survey observations well distributed in phase within the star's
0.56432d period shows an AB=4.9mag variation in the far UV (1350-1750A) band
and an AB=1.8mag variation in the near UV (1750-2750A) band, compared with only
a 0.8mag variation in the broad, unfiltered ROTSE-I (4500-10000A) band. These
GALEX UV observations are the first to reveal a large RR Lyrae amplitude
variation at wavelengths below 1800A. We compare the GALEX and ROTSE-I
observations to predictions made by recent Kurucz stellar atmosphere models. We
use published physical parameters for the comparable period (0.57433d),
well-observed RR Lyrae star WY Antliae to compute predicted FUV, NUV, and
ROTSE-I light curves for J143753.84+345924.8. The observed light curves agree
with the Kurucz predictions for [Fe/H]=-1.25 to within AB=0.2mag in the GALEX
NUV and ROTSE-I bands, and within 0.5mag in the FUV. At all metallicities
between solar and one hundredth solar, the Kurucz models predict 6-8mag of
variation at wavelengths between 1000-1700A. Other variable stars with similar
temperature variations, such as Cepheids, should also have large-amplitude FUV
light curves, observable during the ongoing GALEX imaging surveys.Comment: This paper will be published as part of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer
