    BaCu3O4: High Temperature Magnetic Order in One-Dimensional S=1/2 Diamond-Chains

    The magnetic properties of the alkaline earth oxocuprate BaCu3O4 are investigated. We show that the characteristic Cu3O4 layers of this material can be described with diamond chains of antiferromagnetically coupled Cu 1/2 spins with only a weak coupling between two adjacent chains. These Cu3O4 layers seem to represent a so far unique system of weakly coupled one-dimensional magnetic objects where the local AF ordering of the Cu2+ ions leads to an actual net magnetic moment of an isolated diamond chain. We demonstrate a magnetic transition at a high N\'eel temperature T_{N}=336 K

    We review the theory of FEL oscillators operating with tapered undulators. We consider the case of a uniform tapering and introduce a parameter which characterizes the effect of the tapering on the gain and on the saturation intensity. We analyze the effect of the tapering on the FEL dynamics by including the pulse propagation effects too. We analyze the importance of tapering as a tool to model the optical pulse shapes and to control the higher harmonic intensities

    This paper is devoted to a detailed analysis of the new type of the undulator radiation generated by an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeling along a crystal plane, which is periodically bent by a transverse acoustic wave, as well as to the conditions limiting the observation of this phenomenon. This mechanism makes feasible the generation of electromagnetic radiation, both spontaneous and stimulated, emitted in a wide range of the photon energies, from X- up to gamma-rays

    Phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates

    The zero-temperature system of two dilute overlapping Bose-Einstein condensates is unstable against long wavelength excitations if the interaction strength between the distinguishable bosons exceeds the geometric mean of the like-boson interaction strengths. If the condensates attract each other, the instability is similar to the instability of the negative scattering length condensates. If the condensates repel, they separate spatially into condensates of equal pressure. We estimate the boundary size, surface tension and energy of the phase separated condensate system and we discuss the implications for double condensates in atomic traps.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

    Observation of metastable states in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

    Bose-Einstein condensates have been prepared in long-lived metastable excited states. Two complementary types of metastable states were observed. The first is due to the immiscibility of multiple components in the condensate, and the second to local suppression of spin-relaxation collisions. Relaxation via re-condensation of non-condensed atoms, spin relaxation, and quantum tunneling was observed.     Time-resolved local induction measurements near to the vortex lattice order-disorder transition in optimally doped Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8+δ_{8+\delta} single crystals shows that the high-field, disordered phase can be quenched to fields as low as half the transition field. Over an important range of fields, the electrodynamical behavior of the vortex system is governed by the co-existence of the two phases in the sample. We interpret the results in terms of supercooling of the high-field phase and the possible first order nature of the order-disorder transition at the ``second peak''.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.
