Improving efficiency in radio surveys for gravitational lenses
Many lens surveys have hitherto used observations of large samples of
background sources to select the small minority which are multiply imaged by
lensing galaxies along the line of sight. Recently surveys such as SLACS and
OLS have improved the efficiency of surveys by pre-selecting double-redshift
systems from SDSS. We explore other ways to improve survey efficiency by
optimum use of astrometric and morphological information in existing
large-scale optical and radio surveys. The method exploits the small position
differences between FIRST radio positions of lensed images and the SDSS lens
galaxy positions, together with the marginal resolution of some larger
gravitational lens systems by the FIRST beam. We present results of a small
pilot study with the VLA and MERLIN, and discuss the desirable criteria for
future surveys.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 9 pages, 5 figure
Sundual characterizations of the translation group of R
We characterize the first three sundual spaces of C-0(R), with respect to the translation group of R
Resolving the structure of TiBe
There has been considerable controversy regarding the structure of
TiBe, which is variously reported as hexagonal and tetragonal. Lattice
dynamics simulations based on density functional theory show the tetragonal
phase space group to be more stable over all temperatures, while the
hexagonal phase exhibits an imaginary phonon mode, which, if followed, would
lead to the cell adopting the tetragonal structure. We then report the
predicted ground state elastic constants and temperature dependence of the bulk
modulus and thermal expansion for the tetragonal phase.Comment: In press at Acta Crystallographica B. Supplementary material appende
Finding the Pion in the Chiral Random Matrix Vacuum
The existence of a Goldstone boson is demonstrated in chiral random matrix
theory. After determining the effective coupling and calculating the scalar and
pseudoscalar propagators, a random phase approximation summation reveals the
massless pion and massive sigma modes expected whenever chiral symmetry is
spontaneously broken.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, revte
Self-assembled ErAs islands in GaAs for optical-heterodyne THz generation
We report photomixer devices fabricated on a material consisting of self-assembled ErAs islands in GaAs, which is grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The devices perform comparably and provide an alternative to those made from low-temperature-grown GaAs. The photomixer's frequency response demonstrates that the material is a photoconductor with subpicosecond response time, in agreement with time-resolved differential reflectance measurements. The material also provides the other needed properties such as high photocarrier mobility and high breakdown field, which exceeds 2×10^5 V/cm. The maximum output power before device failure at frequencies of 1 THz was of order 0.1 µW. This material has the potential to allow engineering of key photomixer properties such as the response time and dark resistance
Description and calibration of the Langley unitary plan wind tunnel
The two test sections of the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel were calibrated over the operating Mach number range from 1.47 to 4.63. The results of the calibration are presented along with a a description of the facility and its operational capability. The calibrations include Mach number and flow angularity distributions in both test sections at selected Mach numbers and tunnel stagnation pressures. Calibration data are also presented on turbulence, test-section boundary layer characteristics, moisture effects, blockage, and stagnation-temperature distributions. The facility is described in detail including dimensions and capacities where appropriate, and example of special test capabilities are presented. The operating parameters are fully defined and the power consumption characteristics are discussed
Carrier extraction circuit
Feedback loop extracts demodulated reference signals from IF input and feeds signal back to demodulator. Since reference signal is extracted directly from carrier, no separate reference need be transmitted. Circuit obtains coherent carrier from balanced or unbalanced four-phase signal of varying characteristics
