Social Media and Sexual Behavior Among Adolescents: Is there a link?

    Get PDF
Background: Adolescent sexual risk taking and its consequences remain a global public health concern. Empirical evidence on the impact that social media has on sexual health behaviors among youth is sparse. Objective: The study aimed to examine the relationship between social media and the change in sexual risk over time and whether parental monitoring moderates this relationship. Methods: This study comprised a sample of 555 Latino youth aged 13-19 years from Maryland, United States completing baseline and follow-up surveys. Mixed-effects linear regression was used to examine the relationship between social media and the change in sexual risk over time and whether parental monitoring moderated the relationship. Results: Sexual risk behaviors significantly increased between baseline (T1) and follow up (T2) (mean=0.432 vs mean=0.734, P\u3c.001). Youth sending more than 100 text messages per day had significantly higher sexual risk scores (beta=1.008, P\u3c.001) but significantly larger declines in sexual risk scores for higher levels of parental monitoring (beta=−.237, P=.009). Conclusions: Although adolescents exchange SMS at high rates, parental monitoring remains vital to parent-child relationships and can moderate SMS frequency and sexual risk behaviors, despite parental influence diminishing and peer pressure and social influences increasing during adolescence

The paper discusses the synthesis, characterisation, and performance evaluation of diarylfuroxans namely, bis-phenyl-3,4-furoxan (5) and bis-(4’-nitrophenyl)-3,4-furoxan (6). Themolecules have been synthesised on the lines of reported method by cyclodimerisation of thenitrile oxides generated from benzaldoxime and p-nitro benzaldoxime, respectively. The synthesisedfuroxans (5 ) and (6) were characterised by the elemental analysis, UV, IR, and 1H NMRspectroscopy. The hazard characteristics (impact and friction sensitivity) confirm that thecompounds are safe to handle. The oxygen balance, velocity of detonation and detonationpressure have been computed. The detonation velocity and pressure along with oxygen balanceincreased with the substitution of nitro group in the benzene ring, as expected. Thethermogravimetric studies on promising compound (6) brings out that maximum weight lossoccurs at decomposition temperature of 259–260 °C

In the recent years, so many technologies in multiple access trends have influenced the field of Wireless Sensor Networks in significant ways. Various trends are readily available technology of ubiquitous wireless sensor networks as well as wireless communication networks and progress in the development of two multiple access techniques are compared in this scenario: the OFDMA and SC-FDMA. The OFDMA and SC-FDMA transceivers are modeled and simulated considering both the interleaved and localized subcarriers mapping schemes. WSNs have the potentiality to connect the physical world with the virtual world by forming a network of sensor nodes. To prolong the networklsquo;s hop in terms of single and two hop using both techniques should be used in the sensor nodes. The minimization of computing and storage platforms as well as the development of novel micro sensors and sensor materials with high reliability force encourages technology in research on WSN. In this paper, we will proposed the field of multipath routing in wireless sensor networks, and mainly focus on the technology of SER of WSNs

Literature Survey of Security Enhancement in MANET Routing Protocols of WLANs

A Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is an autonomous collection of mobile users that communicate over relatively bandwidth constrained wireless links. One of the main issues in such networks is performance- in a dynamically changing topology; the nodes are expected to be power-aware due to the bandwidth constrained network. Another issue in such networks is security - since every node participates in the operation of the network equally, Malicious nodes are difficult to detect. There are several applications of mobile ad hoc networks such as disaster recovery operations, battle field communications, etc. The most active research area under MANET routing protocol is security. MANETs have certain unique characteristics that make them vulnerable to several types of attacks. Since they are deployed an open environment where all nodes co-operate in forwarding the packets in the network, Malicious nodes are difficult to detect

Background: Eclampsia refers to occurrence of generalized tonic clonic convulsions (GTCS) followed by confusion or coma during pregnancy or puerperium in patients with preeclampsia excluding other neurological conditions. Purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk factors, management protocols and determine maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality in patients of eclampsia. Methods: This is retrospective study of 180 cases of eclampsia carried out from June 2017 to December 2019 including all the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum cases at tertiary care centre. Immediate management was focused to control the convulsion and lower the blood pressure followed by NST and USG foetus with Doppler study. Results: In this study, 72.2% cases reported antepartum eclampsia while 27.8% cases were postpartum and overall incidence was 0.91% of total deliveries conducted during the study period. Incidence was higher in primigravida (74.4%) and below 25 years age (68.8%). Magnesium sulphate was effective in 94.4% cases. Study reports 63 normal vaginal delivery, 5 assisted vaginal delivery, 110 caesarean section and 2 women expired undelivered. There were 10 maternal deaths. Conclusions: Time interval between eclamptic seizures and initiation of therapy is an important prognostic factor affecting maternal and perinatal outcome. Public awareness regarding the importance of regular antenatal visits can help in reducing chances of development of eclampsia. Even though various drugs and methods have been tried for the treatment of eclampsia, the definitive management is the delivery of foetus after control of convulsion, hypertension and should be managed at tertiary care hospital

Charge efficiency of Ni/H2 cells during transfer orbit of Telstar 4 satellites

The TELSTAR 4 communication satellites being manufactured by Martin Marietta Astro Space (Astro Space) for AT&T are three axis stabilized spacecraft scheduled to be launched on expendable vehicles such as the Atlas or Ariane rockets. Typically, these spacecraft consist of a box that holds the electronics and supports the antenna reflectors and the solar array wings. The wings and reflectors are folded against the sides of the box during launch and the spacecraft is spun for attitude control in that phase; they are then deployed after achieving the final orbit. The launch phase and transfer orbits required to achieve the final geosynchronous orbit typically take 4 to 5 days during which time the power required for command, telemetry, attitude control, heaters, etc., is provided by two 50 AH nickel hydrogen batteries augmented by the exposed outboard solar panels. In the past, this situation has presented no problem since there was a considerable excess of power available from the array. In the case of large high powered spacecraft such as TELSTAR 4, however, the design power levels in transfer orbit approach the time-averaged power available from the exposed surface area of the solar arrays, resulting in a very tight power margin. To compound the difficulty, the array output of the spinning spacecraft in transfer orbit is shaped like a full wave rectified sine function and provides very low charging rates to the batteries during portions of the rotation. In view of the typically low charging efficiency of alkaline nickel batteries at low rates, it was decided to measure the efficiency during a simulation of the TELSTAR 4 conditions at the expected power levels and temperatures on three nickel hydrogen cells of similar design. The unique feature of nickel hydrogen cells that makes the continuous measurement of efficiency possible is that hydrogen is one of the active materials and thus, cell pressure is a direct measure of the state of charge or available capacity. The pressure is measured with a calibrated strain gage mounted on the outside of the pressurized cell

Random matrix ensemble with random two-body interactions in presence of a mean-field for spin one boson systems

For mm number of bosons, carrying spin (SS=1) degree of freedom, in Ω\Omega number of single particle orbitals, each triply degenerate, we introduce and analyze embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices generated by random two-body interactions that are spin (S) scalar [BEGOE(2)-S1S1]. The embedding algebra is U(3)GG1SO(3)U(3) \supset G \supset G1 \otimes SO(3) with SO(3) generating spin SS. A method for constructing the ensembles in fixed-(mm, SS) space has been developed. Numerical calculations show that the form of the fixed-(mm, SS) density of states is close to Gaussian and level fluctuations follow GOE. Propagation formulas for the fixed-(mm, SS) space energy centroids and spectral variances are derived for a general one plus two-body Hamiltonian preserving spin. In addition to these, we also introduce two different pairing symmetry algebras in the space defined by BEGOE(2)-S1S1 and the structure of ground states is studied for each paring symmetry.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure
