Magnetooptical sum rules close to the Mott transition
We derive new sum rules for the real and imaginary parts of the
frequency-dependent Hall constant and Hall conductivity. As an example, we
discuss their relevance to the doped Mott insulator that we describe within the

Elucidation of the Hsp90 C-terminal Inhibitor Binding Site
The Hsp90 chaperone machine is required for the folding, activation and/or stabilization of more than 50 proteins directly related to malignant progression. Hsp90 contains small molecule binding sites at both its N- and C-terminal domains, however, limited structural and biochemical data regarding the C-terminal binding site is available. In this report, the small molecule binding site in
the Hsp90 C-terminal domain was revealed by protease fingerprinting and photoaffinity labeling utilizing LC-MS/MS. The identified site was characterized by generation of a homology model for hHsp90α using the SAXS open structure of HtpG and docking the bioactive conformation of NB into the generated model. The resulting model for the bioactive conformation of NB bound to Hsp90α is presented herein
Fatty acids linked to cardiovascular mortality are associated with risk factors
Background. Although saturated fatty acids (FAs) have been linked to cardiovascular mortality, it is not clear whether this outcome is attributable solely to their effects on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or whether other risk factors are also associated with FAs. The Western Alaskan Native population, with its rapidly changing lifestyles, shift in diet from unsaturated to saturated fatty acids and dramatic increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD), presents an opportunity to elucidate any associations between specific FAs and known CVD risk factors.
Objective. We tested the hypothesis that the specific FAs previously identified as related to CVD mortality are also associated with individual CVD risk factors.
Methods. In this community-based, cross-sectional study, relative proportions of FAs in plasma and red blood cell membranes were compared with CVD risk factors in a sample of 758 men and women aged ]35 years. Linear regression analyses were used to analyze relations between specific FAs and CVD risk factors (LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, body mass index, fasting glucose and fasting insulin, 2-hour glucose and 2-hour insulin).
Results. The specific saturated FAs previously identified as related to CVD mortality, the palmitic and myristic acids, were adversely associated with most CVD risk factors, whereas unsaturated linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and the marine n-3 FAs were not associated or were beneficially associated with CVD risk factors.
Conclusions. The results suggest that CVD risk factors are more extensively affected by individual FAs than hitherto recognized, and that risk for CVD,MI and stroke can be reduced by reducing the intake of palmitate, myristic acid and simple carbohydrates and improved by greater intake of linoleic acid and marine n-3 FAs
Memory function approach to the Hall constant in strongly correlated electron systems
The anomalous properties of the Hall constant in the normal state of
high- superconductors are investigated within the single-band Hubbard
model. We argue that the Mori theory is the appropriate formalism to address
the Hall constant, since it aims directly at resistivities rather than
conductivities. More specifically, the frequency dependent Hall constant
decomposes into its infinite frequency limit and a memory function
contribution. As a first step, both terms are calculated perturbatively in
and on an infinite dimensional lattice, where is the correlation strength.
If we allow to be of the order of twice the bare band width, the memory
function contribution causes the Hall constant to change sign as a function of

BRST Invariant Theory Of A Generalized 1+1 Dimensional Nonlinear Sigma Model With Topological Term
We give a generalized Lagrangian density of 1+1 Dimensional O(3) nonlinear
sigma model with subsidiary constraints, different Lagrange multiplier fields
and topological term, find a lost intrinsic constraint condition, convert the
subsidiary constraints into inner constraints in the nonlinear sigma model,
give the example of not introducing the lost constraint, by comparing the
example with the case of introducing the lost constraint, we obtain that when
not introducing the lost constraint, one has to obtain a lot of various
non-intrinsic constraints. We further deduce the gauge generator, give general
BRST transformation of the model under the general conditions. It is discovered
that there exists a gauge parameter originating from the freedom degree of BRST
transformation in a general O(3) nonlinear sigma model, and we gain the general

A numerical study of multi-soliton configurations in a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator
We evaluate from first principles the self-consistent Hartree-Fock energies
for multi-soliton configurations in a doped, spin-1/2, antiferromagnetic Mott
insulator on a two-dimensional square lattice. We find that nearest-neighbor
Coulomb repulsion stabilizes a regime of charged meron-antimeron vortex soliton
pairs over a region of doping from 0.05 to 0.4 holes per site for intermediate
coupling 3 < U/t <8. This stabilization is mediated through the generation of
``spin-flux'' in the mean-field antiferromagnetic (AFM) background. Holes
cloaked by a meron-vortex in the spin-flux AFM background are charged bosons.
Our static Hartree-Fock calculations provide an upper bound on the energy of a
finite density of charged vortices. This upper bound is lower than the energy
of the corresponding charged stripe configurations. A finite density of charge
carrying vortices is shown to produce a large number of unoccupied electronic
levels in the Mott-Hubbard charge transfer gap. These levels lead to
significant band tailing and a broad mid-infrared band in the optical
absorption spectrum as observed experimentally. At very low doping (below 0.05)
the doping charges create extremely tightly bound meron-antimeron pairs or even
isolated conventional spin-polarons, whereas for very high doping (above 0.4)
the spin background itself becomes unstable to formation of a conventional
Fermi liquid and the spin-flux mean-field is energetically unfavorable. Our
results point to the predominance of a quantum liquid of charged, bosonic,
vortex solitons at intermediate coupling and intermediate doping

Subjective response to antipsychotic treatment and compliance in schizophrenia. A naturalistic study comparing olanzapine, risperidone and haloperidol (EFESO Study)
BACKGROUND: In order to compare the effectiveness of different antipsychotic drugs in the treatment of schizophrenia it is very important to evaluate subjective response and compliance in patient cohorts treated according to routine clinical practice. METHOD: Outpatients with schizophrenia entered this prospective, naturalistic study when they received a new prescription for an antipsychotic drug. Treatment assignment was based on purely clinical criteria, as the study did not include any experimental intervention. Patients treated with olanzapine, risperidone or haloperidol were included in the analysis. Subjective response was measured using the 10-item version of the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10), and treatment compliance was measured using a physician-rated 4 point categorical scale. RESULTS: A total of 2128 patients initiated treatment (as monotherapy) with olanzapine, 417 with risperidone, and 112 with haloperidol. Olanzapine-treated patients had significantly higher DAI-10 scores and significantly better treatment compliance compared to both risperidone- and haloperidol-treated patients. Risperidone-treated patients had a significantly higher DAI-10 score compared to haloperidol-treated patients. CONCLUSION: Subjective response and compliance were superior in olanzapine-treated patients, compared to patients treated with risperidone and haloperidol, in routine clinical practice. AMPT-induced monoamine depletion in humans: evaluation of two alternative [123I]IBZM SPECT procedures
Purpose
Acute monoamine depletion paradigms using alpha-methyl-para-tyrosine (AMPT) combined with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have been used successfully to evaluate disturbances in central dopaminergic neurotransmission. However, severe side effects due to relatively high doses (4,500 to 8,000 mg) of AMPT have been reasons for study withdrawal. Thus, we assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of two alternative procedures, using lower doses of AMPT.
Methods
Six healthy subjects underwent three measurements of striatal dopamine D2 receptor (D2R)-binding potential (BPND) with SPECT and the selective radiolabeled D2R antagonist [123I]IBZM. All subjects were scanned in the absence of pharmacological intervention (baseline) and after two different depletion procedures. In the first depletion session, over 6 h, subjects were administered 1,500 mg of AMPT before scanning. In the second depletion session, over 25 h, subjects were administered 40 mg AMPT/kg body weight. We also administered the Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale, a self-report instrument designed to measure the subjective experience of patients on neuroleptic medication.
Results
We found no change of mean D2R BPND after the first and short AMPT challenge compared to the baseline. However, we found a significant increase in striatal D2R BPND binding after the AMPT challenge adjusted for bodyweight compared to both other regimen. Although subjective well-being worsened after the prolonged AMPT challenge, no severe side effects were reported.
Conclusions
Our results imply a low-dosage, suitable alternative to the common AMPT procedure. The probability of side effects and study withdrawal can be reduced by this procedure
Arsenic-gene interactions and beta-cell function in the Strong Heart Family Study
We explored arsenic-gene interactions influencing pancreatic beta-cell activity in the Strong Heart Family Study (SHFS). We considered 42 variants selected for associations with either beta-cell function (31 variants) or arsenic metabolism (11 variants) in the SHFS. Beta-cell function was calculated as homeostatic model - beta corrected for insulin resistance (cHOMA-B) by regressing homeostatic model – insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) on HOMA-B and adding mean HOMA-B. Arsenic exposure was dichotomized at the median of the sum of creatinine-corrected inorganic and organic arsenic species measured by high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICPMS). Additive GxE models for cHOMA-B were adjusted for age and ancestry, and accounted for family relationships. Models were stratified by center (Arizona, Oklahoma, North Dakota and South Dakota) and meta-analyzed. The two interactions between higher vs. lower arsenic and SNPs for cHOMA-B that were nominally significant at P < 0.05 were with rs10738708 (SNP overall effect −3.91, P = 0.56; interaction effect with arsenic −31.14, P = 0.02) and rs4607517 (SNP overall effect +16.61, P = 0.03; interaction effect with arsenic +27.02, P = 0.03). The corresponding genes GCK and TUSC1 suggest oxidative stress and apoptosis as possible mechanisms for arsenic impacts on beta-cell function. No interactions were Bonferroni-significant (1.16 × 10−3). Our findings are suggestive of oligogenic moderation of arsenic impacts on pancreatic β-cell endocrine function, but were not Bonferroni-significant

Consistent Directions of Effect for Established Type 2 Diabetes Risk Variants Across Populations: The Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) Consortium
Common genetic risk variants for type 2 diabetes (T2D) have primarily been identified in populations of European and Asian ancestry. We tested whether the direction of association with 20 T2D risk variants generalizes across six major racial/ethnic groups in the U.S. as part of the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology Consortium (16,235 diabetes case and 46,122 control subjects of European American, African American, Hispanic, East Asian, American Indian, and Native Hawaiian ancestry). The percentage of positive (odds ratio [OR] >1 for putative risk allele) associations ranged from 69% in American Indians to 100% in European Americans. Of the nine variants where we observed significant heterogeneity of effect by racial/ethnic group (Pheterogeneity 1) in at least five groups. The marked directional consistency of association observed for most genetic variants across populations implies a shared functional common variant in each region. Fine-mapping of all loci will be required to reveal markers of risk that are important within and across populations
