The Morality of Pronoun Flexibility: Connections Between Language and Cognitive Identity Alignment

The power of words we use to refer to one another is gaining recognition in contemporary socio-political discourse. Yet, interplay between language and complex cognitive processes, including moral judgments and identity formation, largely remains a subject of philosophical and theoretical debate. In order to begin examining the existence of such interactions empirically, this paper investigates the syntactic shift of the third person plural pronoun they/them to the third person singular, used to refer to gender non-binary/gender nonconforming individuals. Using grammaticality acceptance ratings and the Worthen 2016 moral attitudes test, administered under timed pressure, this study measures both intuitions surrounding the syntax of novel they/them pronoun usage and moral attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ individuals. Analysis revealed a strong positive correlation between high grammaticality ratings of novel pronoun (they/them) usage and moral attitude scores. These results may be the basis for future investigation into a psycholinguistic connection between intuitive judgements of syntax and complex cognitive processes i.e., moral judgments

Zusammenfassend soll hervorgehoben werden, daß das Nachfragewachstum in den 90er Jahren nicht von besonders einstellungsmotivierten Verbrauchern getragen wurde, sondern in erster Linie durch Aktivitäten der Anbieter. Zu nennen sind in diesem Zusammenhang: sinkende Preise, Ausweitung der Distribution sowie Ausweitung der Sortimente. Es läßt sich aus dieser Entwicklung schließen, daß auch das zukünftige Nachfragewachstum stark von den Impulsen der Anbieter sowie von der Qualität und der Intensität der Marketingaktivitäten abhängen wird. Neben dem Gesundheitsbewußtsein müssen weitere Trends in der Nahrungsmittelnachfrage aufgegriffen werden, um so möglichst viele Verbrauchersegmente anzusprechen

Spectral and Photometric Evolution of Young Stellar Populations: the Impact of Gaseous Emission at Various Metallicities

We include gaseous continuum and line emission into our GALEV models for the spectral and photometric evolution of Simple Stellar Populations (SSPs) for various metallicities in the range 0.02 <= Z/Zsun <= 2.5. This allows to extend them to significantly younger ages than before. They now cover the age range from 4 Myr all through 14 Gyr. We point out the very important contributions of gaseous emission to broad band fluxes and their strong metallicity dependence during very early evolutionary stages of star clusters, galaxies or subgalactic fragments with vigorous ongoing star formation. Emission-line contributions are commonly seen in these actively star-forming regions. Models without gaseous emission cannot explain their observed colors at all, or lead to wrong age estimates. We use up-to-date Lyman continuum emission rates and decided to use recent empirical determinations of emission line ratios relative to Hbeta for subsolar metallicities. We justify this approach for all situations where no or not enough spectral information is available to determine all the parameters required by photoionization models. The effects of gaseous line and continuum emission on broad band fluxes are shown for different metallicities and as a function of age. In addition to the many filter systems already included in our earlier models, we here also include the HST NICMOS and Advanced Camera for Surveys (= ACS) filter systems

Perkutaner Verschluss des Vorhofseptumdefekts mit dem Device Nit-Occlud® ASD-R

Einleitung: Der Vorhofseptumdefekt (ASD) macht 6 – 10% aller ange-borenen Herzfehler (AHF) aus, im Erwachsenenalter bis zu 40%. 80% aller ASDs sind von Secundum-Typ (II). Sicherheit und Wirksamkeit des Amplatzer-Devices ASO® wurden bereits bewiesen; nichtsdestotrotz traten zum Teil schwere Komplikationen auf, und der Preis ist für Entwicklungsländer zu hoch. Ein neues Device, der Nit-Occlud ASD-R®, gefertigt aus einem Nitinoldraht ohne Lötstellen, mit Polyesthermembranen und Reverse-Konfiguration, entwickelt und hergestellt in Bolivien, soll auch diese Nachteile noch überwinden. Zielsetzung: Vorstellung der kurz- und mittelfristigen Ergebnisse des perkutanen Verschlusses des ASD II mit dem ASD-R® in Bolivien. Methodik: Retrospektive Studie an 55 Patienten, interveniert im größten kardiologischen Zentrum in Bolivien, mit Analyse der Variablen bzgl. Sicherheit und Wirksamkeit des Devices. Ergebnisse: Alter 20,9 ± 16,6 Jahre (3 bis 67); w:m = 40:15. Defektmaß 17 ± 5,7 mm (5,4 bis 28), Device-Stent 18,5 ± 5,5 mm (6 bis 30). Geringere unerwünschte Ereignisse im Zusammenhang mit dem Device traten bei 5 Patienten auf (4 Arrhythmien), nur ein schweres: Embolisierung des trotz Protrusion freigesetzten Devices nach 12h mit chirurgischer Bergung und ASD-Verschluss. Nur in 2 Patienten traten Probleme bei der Liberation auf. Die Verschlussrate am Folgetag war 85,2%, nach 6 Monaten 100%. Schlussfolgerungen: 1. Für die Patienten dieser Studie ist der perkutane ASD-Verschluss mit Nit-Occlud ASD-R® eine wirksame und sichere Methode. 2. Es ereigneten sich weder Erosion noch Perforierung, das Device zeigte sich als atraumatisch. 3. Extrem große Defekte oder ungeeignete Defektränder können andere Methoden (Chirurgie) erfordern
