Discussing the possibility of observation of parity violation in heavy ion collisions

    Get PDF
It was recently argued that in heavy ion collision the parity could be broken. This Note addresses the question of possibility of the experimental detection of the effect. We discuss how parity violating effects would modify the final particle distributions and how one could construct variables sensitive to the effect, and which measurement would be the (most) conclusive. Discussing different observables we also discuss the question if the ``signals'' can be faked by ``conventional'' effects (such as anisotropic flow, etc.) and make estimates of the signals.Comment: LaTeX, 5 pages; some corrections in chapter III; main results are unchange

Soliton-antisoliton pair production in particle collisions

We propose general semiclassical method for computing the probability of soliton-antisoliton pair production in particle collisions. The method is illustrated by explicit numerical calculations in (1+1)-dimensional scalar field model. We find that the probability of the process is suppressed by an exponentially small factor which is almost constant at high energies.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, journal versio

Lattice renormalisation of O(a) improved heavy-light operators

The analytical expressions and the numerical values of the renormalisation constants of O(a){\cal O}(a) improved static-light currents are given at one-loop order of perturbation theory in the framework of Heavy Quark Effective Theory: the static quark is described by the HYP action and the light quark is described either with the Clover or the Neuberger action. These factors are relevant to extract from a lattice computation the decay constants fBf_B, fBSf_{B_S} and the set of bag parameters BiB_i associated with B−BˉB-\bar{B} mixing phenomenology in the Standard Model and beyond.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables; few comments and references added; version to be published in Phys Rev

Some Properties of Amplitudes at Multi Boson Thresholds in Spontaneously Broken Scalar Theory

It is shown that in a λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 theory of one real scalar field with spontaneous breaking of symmetry a calculation of the amplitudes of production by a virtual field ϕ\phi of nn on-mass-shell bosons all being exactly at rest is equivalent in any order of the loop expansion to a Euclidean space calculation of the mean field of a kink-type configuration. Using this equivalence it is found that all the 1→n1 \to n amplitudes have no absorptive part at the thresholds to any order of perturbation theory. This implies non-trivial relations between multi-boson threshold production amplitudes. In particular the on-mass-shell amplitude of the process 2→32 \to 3 should vanish at the threshold in all loops. It is also shown that the factor n!n! in the 1→n1 \to n amplitudes at the threshold is not eliminated by loop effects.Comment: 11 pages including 3 figures, LaTeX, TPI-MINN-92/61-

Charged-to-neutral heavy meson yield ratio at the Z_b^0 resonances as a probe of the I^G(J^P)=0^-(1^+) channel

It is argued that the ratio of the yield of pairs of charged and neutral B(∗)B^{(*)} mesons in the processes Υ(5S)→π0+(BBˉ∗+c.c.)\Upsilon(5S) \to \pi^0 + (B \bar B^* + c.c.) and Υ(5S)→π0+B∗Bˉ∗\Upsilon(5S) \to \pi^0 + B^* \bar B^* is very sensitive near the corresponding heavy meson threshold to the strong interaction between the mesons in the IG(JP)=0−(1+)I^G(J^P)=0^-(1^+) channel due to significant isospin breaking by the Coulomb force. This channel, not readily accessible by other means, may contain near-threshold molecular meson-antimeson resonances --- isoscalar analogs of the isovector states Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) and Zb(10650)Z_b(10650).Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

Probe for the strong parity violation effects at RHIC with three particle correlations

In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions, \P-odd domains, which might be created in the process of the collision, are predicted to lead to charge separation along the system orbital momentum \cite{Kharzeev:2004ey}. An observable, \P-even, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect, has been proposed in \cite{Voloshin:2004vk} and is based on 3-particle mixed harmonics azimuthal correlations. We report the STAR measurements using this observable for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 and 62 GeV. The results are reported as function of collision centrality, particle separation in rapidity, and particle transverse momentum. Effects that are not related to parity violation but might contribute to the signal are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, Quark Matter 2008 Poster proceeding

Properties of perturbative multi-particle amplitudes in Ï•k\phi^k and O(N)O(N) theories

Threshold amplitudes are considered for multi-particle production in ϕk\phi^k and O(N) ϕ4O(N) ~\phi^4 theories. It is found that the disappearance of tree-level threshold amplitudes of 22 on-shell particles producing a large number of particles occurs in ϕk\phi^k theory only for k=3k=3 and k=4k=4. The one-loop correction to the threshold amplitude for a highly virtual scalar particle decaying into nn particles in an O(N)O(N) model is derived.Comment: 7 pages, LaTex, TPI-MINN-92/60-

QED corrections to isospin-related decay rates of charged and neutral B mesons

We estimate the isospin-violating QED radiative corrections to the charged-to-neutral ratios of the decay rates for B^+ and B^0 in non-leptonic B meson decays. In particular, these corrections are potentially important for precision measurement of the charged-to-neutral production ratio of B meson in e^+e^- annihilation. We calculate explicitly the QED corrections to the ratios of two different types of decay rates \Gamma(B^+ \to J/\psi K^+)/\Gamma(B^0 \to J/\psi K^0) and \Gamma(B^+ \to D^+_S \bar{D^0})/\Gamma(B^0 \to D^+_S D^-) taking into account the form factors of the mesons based on the vector meson dominance model, and compare them with the results obtained for the point-like mesons.Comment: 7 pages, 9 eps figure

    The decay eta_c^prime -> eta_c pi pi

It is pointed out that the decay of the recently observed charmonium eta_c^prime resonance, eta_c^prime -> eta_c pi pi is simply related to the well studied decay psi^prime -> J/psi pi pi and can thus be used for absolute normalization of other decay modes of the eta_c^prime. The total rate of the discussed decay should be approximately three to four times the corresponding rate for the psi^prime$ resonance making the channel with charged pions the most probable exclusive decay mode of the eta_c^prime with the branching ratio in the range 5-10 %.Comment: 5 pages, references adde
