    A semi-Lagrangian scheme for the game pp-Laplacian via pp-averaging

We present and analyze an approximation scheme for the two-dimensional game pp-Laplacian in the framework of viscosity solutions. The approximation is based on a semi-Lagrangian scheme which exploits the idea of pp-averages. We study the properties of the scheme and prove that it converges, in particular cases, to the viscosity solution of the game pp-Laplacian. We also present a numerical implementation of the scheme for different values of pp; the numerical tests show that the scheme is accurate.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures. The proton structure function F2 in the resonance region

Unique measurement of the proton structure function F2 in a wide two-dimensional region of x and Q**2 has been reported. The accessible kinematics covers entire resonance region up to W=2.5 GeV in the Q**2 interval from 0.1 to 4.5 GeV**2. Obtained data allowed for the first time an evaluation of moments of the structure function F2 directly from experimental data as well as an intensive study of the Bloom-Gilman duality phenomenon.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of GDH2002 Conference, 3-6 July 2002, Genova, Italy, to be published in World Scientifi

SCINTILLA A European project for the development of scintillation detectors and new technologies for nuclear security

Europe monitors transits using radiation detectors to prevent illicit trafficking of nuclear materials. The SCINTILLA project aims to develop a toolbox of innovative technologies designed to address different usage cases. This article will review the scope, approach, results of the first benchmark campaign and future plans of the SCINTILLA project.Comment: To appear on the Proceedings of the 13th ICATPP Conference on Astroparticle, Particle, Space Physics and Detectors for Physics Applications, Villa Olmo (Como, Italy), 23--27 October, 2013, to be published by World Scientific (Singapore

P-wave pi pi amplitude from dispersion relations

We solve the dispersion relation for the P-wave pi pi amplitude. We discuss the role of the left hand cut vs Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson (CDD), pole contribution and compare the solution with a generic quark model description. We review the the generic properties of analytical partial wave scattering and production amplitudes and discuses their applicability and fits of experimental data.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, typos corrected, reference adde

Optimal Cantilever Dynamic Vibration Absorbers by Timoshenko Beam Theory

    Get PDF
A double-ended cantilever beam as a distributed parameter dynamic vibration absorber has been applied to a single-degree-of-freedom system subjected to harmonic forces. In this investigation, the beam has been analyzed under the well known model of Timoshenko and the computation of best parameters is based on the Chebyshev's optimality criterion. This is somewhat novel in the field since:The design of cantilever beams as dynamic vibration absorbers is usually made under the hypotheses of the Euler-Bernoulli theory; It is the first time that the Chebyshev's criterion is applied to the design of a double-ended cantilever beam used as a dynamic vibration absorber. For a ready use of the results herein presented, design charts allow a quick choice of optimal parameters such as tuning ratio and mass ratio

A new mathematical model for traveling sand dunes: analysis and approximation

    Get PDF
We present a new two-layer closed form model for the dynamics of desert dunes under the effect of a horizontal wind blowing in an arbitrary direction. This model is an extension of a very simplified model previously introduced by Hadeler and Kuttler [12]. Our extension, inspired by the sandpile dynamics approach, includes the effects of gravity on both sides (upwind and downwind) of the dune, and allows to describe erosion and deposition in a more accurate way. After a discussion of the model and its properties we present a numerical scheme based on finite differences in 1D and we prove its consistency and stability. Some numerical tests show a good qualitative behavior and a realistic shape for the evolving dunes. Finally, we discuss the preliminary steps of a possible extension of this model to the 2D case
