Single photon quantum cryptography
We report the full implementation of a quantum cryptography protocol using a
stream of single photon pulses generated by a stable and efficient source
operating at room temperature. The single photon pulses are emitted on demand
by a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in a diamond nanocrystal. The
quantum bit error rate is less that 4.6% and the secure bit rate is 9500
bits/s. The overall performances of our system reaches a domain where single
photons have a measurable advantage over an equivalent system based on
attenuated light pulses.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A database of whole-body action videos for the study of action, emotion, and untrustworthiness
We present a database of high-definition (HD) videos for the study of traits inferred from whole-body actions. Twenty-nine actors (19 female) were filmed performing different actions—walking, picking up a box, putting down a box, jumping, sitting down, and standing and acting—while conveying different traits, including four emotions (anger, fear, happiness, sadness), untrustworthiness, and neutral, where no specific trait was conveyed. For the actions conveying the four emotions and untrustworthiness, the actions were filmed multiple times, with the actor conveying the traits with different levels of intensity. In total, we made 2,783 action videos (in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional format), each lasting 7 s with a frame rate of 50 fps. All videos were filmed in a green-screen studio in order to isolate the action information from all contextual detail and to provide a flexible stimulus set for future use. In order to validate the traits conveyed by each action, we asked participants to rate each of the actions corresponding to the trait that the actor portrayed in the two-dimensional videos. To provide a useful database of stimuli of multiple actions conveying multiple traits, each video name contains information on the gender of the actor, the action executed, the trait conveyed, and the rating of its perceived intensity. All videos can be downloaded free at the following address: http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~neb506/databases.html. We discuss potential uses for the database in the analysis of the perception of whole-body actions
The Naukratis Project; Petrie, Greeks and Egyptians
This report outlines the general aspects of the Naukratis Project of the British Museum both in reconstructing the body of material excavated between 1884 and 1903 at the Nile delta site, and in renewed fieldwork. In particular it describes the material studied by the present author, including that housed in UCL
Field test of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution prototype
We have designed and realized a prototype that implements a
continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol based on coherent states
and reverse reconciliation. The system uses time and polarization multiplexing
for optimal transmission and detection of the signal and phase reference, and
employs sophisticated error-correction codes for reconciliation. The security
of the system is guaranteed against general coherent eavesdropping attacks. The
performance of the prototype was tested over preinstalled optical fibres as
part of a quantum cryptography network combining different quantum key
distribution technologies. The stable and automatic operation of the prototype
over 57 hours yielded an average secret key distribution rate of 8 kbit/s over
a 3 dB loss optical fibre, including the key extraction process and all quantum
and classical communication. This system is therefore ideal for securing
communications in metropolitan size networks with high speed requirements.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, submitted to New Journal of Physics (Special

Partially ferromagnetic electromagnet for trapping and cooling neutral atoms to quantum degeneracy
International audienceWe have developed a compact partially ferromagnetic electromagnet to produce a Ioffe-Pritchard trap for neutral atoms. Our structure permits strong magnetic confinement with low power consumption. Compared to the previous iron-core electromagnet, it allows for easy compensation of remnant fields and very high stability, along with cost-effective realization and compactness. We describe and characterize our apparatus and demonstrate trapping and cooling of Rb 87 atoms to quantum degeneracy. Pure Bose-Einstein condensates containing 10^6 atoms are routinely realized on a half-minute cycle. In addition we test the stability of the magnetic trap by producing atom lasers
