    Deconfinement of neutron star matter within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

    We study the deconfinement transition of hadronic matter into quark matter under neutron star conditions assuming color and flavor conservation during the transition. We use a two-phase description. For the hadronic phase we use different parameterizations of a non-linear Walecka model which includes the whole baryon octet. For the quark matter phase we use an SU(3)_f Nambu-Jona-Lasinio effective model including color superconductivity. Deconfinement is considered to be a first order phase transition that conserves color and flavor. It gives a short-lived transitory colorless-quark-phase that is not in beta-equilibrium, and decays to a stable configuration in tau ~ tau_{weak} ~ 10^{-8} s. However, in spite of being very short lived, the transition to this intermediate phase determines the onset of the transition inside neutron stars. We find the transition free-energy density for temperatures typical of neutron star interiors. We also find the critical mass above which compact stars should contain a quark core and below which they are safe with respect to a sudden transition to quark matter. Rather independently on the stiffness of the hadronic equation of state (EOS) we find that the critical mass of hadronic stars (without trapped neutrinos) is in the range of ~ 1.5 - 1.8 solar masses.     Quantum shutter approach to tunneling time scales with wave packets

    The quantum shutter approach to tunneling time scales (G. Garc\'{\i }a-Calder\'{o}n and A. Rubio, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{55}, 3361 (1997)), which uses a cutoff plane wave as the initial condition, is extended in such a way that a certain type of wave packet can be used as the initial condition. An analytical expression for the time evolved wave function is derived. The time-domain resonance, the peaked structure of the probability density (as the function of time) at the exit of the barrier, originally found with the cutoff plane wave initial condition, is studied with the wave packet initial conditions. It is found that the time-domain resonance is not very sensitive to the width of the packet when the transmission process is in the tunneling regime.Comment: 6 page

    Human impacts have left and are leaving distinctive imprints in the geological record. Here we show that in North America, the human-caused changes evident in the mammalian fossil record since c. 14,000 years ago are as pronounced as earlier faunal changes that subdivide Cenozoic epochs into the North American Land Mammal Ages (NALMAs). Accordingly, we define two new North American Land Mammal Ages, the Santarosean and the Saintagustinean, which subdivide Holocene time and complete a biochronologic system that has proven extremely useful in dating terrestrial deposits and in revealing major features of faunal change through the past 66 million years. The new NALMAs highlight human-induced changes to the Earth system, and inform the debate on whether or not defining an Anthropocene epoch is justified, and if so, when it began

    The phase structure of the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model at zero temperature and in the presence of baryon- and isospin chemical potentials is investigated. It is shown that in the chiral limit and for a wide range of model parameters there exist two different phases with pion condensation. In the first, ordinary phase, quarks are gapped particles.     An Embarrassingly Simple Method to Mitigate Undesirable Properties of Pretrained Language Model Tokenizers

    We introduce FLOTA (Few Longest Token Approximation), a simple yet effective method to improve the tokenization of pretrained language models (PLMs). FLOTA uses the vocabulary of a standard tokenizer but tries to preserve the morphological structure of words during tokenization. We evaluate FLOTA on morphological gold segmentations as well as a text classification task, using BERT, GPT-2, and XLNet as example PLMs. FLOTA leads to performance gains, makes inference more efficient, and enhances the robustness of PLMs with respect to whitespace noise

    Nutrient uptake by corn and soybean, removal, and recycling with crop residue

    The prevailing phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) management system in Iowa and the Midwest is based on soil testing, response-based fertilizer application for low-testing soils, and removal-based fertilizer application to maintain desirable soil-test P (STP) and soil-test K (STK) values. Several issues are important for an effective implementation of this management concept. These include use of appropriate soil-test methods and field calibrations to determine optimum soil-test levels and fertilization rates, knowledge of fertilization and cropping impacts on soil-test values over time, and reliable estimates of P and K removal with harvest. In Iowa, continued research during the last two decades has provided calibrations for various soil-test methods for P and K, which have been used for existing soil-test interpretations in Iowa State University (ISU) Extension publication PM 1688. This publication also suggests to use estimates of P and K removal to maintain optimum STP and STK values, assuming there is a good relationship between P and K removal and STP or STK trends over time. Research during the last two decades has shown large temporal variability of yield and both STK and STP but very large for STK. Therefore, better study of the relationship between P or K removal and STP or STK in the short term and long term should be useful to improve the effectiveness of P and K management for crop production and to maintain acceptable water quality in Iowa

    In this work, we describe the structure of the nest of Phyllotis andium Thomas, 1912 in an inter-Andean dry scrub in the south of the Azuay province in Ecuador, and the use of an introduced grass in their manufacture. Observations on sociability and abundance of this species are also presented. These data provide new information on the intraspecific relationships of these rodents and their natural history.En este trabajo describimos la estructura del nido de Phyllotis andium Thomas, 1912 en un matorral seco interandino al sur de la provincia del Azuay en Ecuador y el uso de un pasto introducido en su fabricación.     Graph analysis of semantic word association among children, adults, and the elderly

    This study used graph analysis to investigate how age differences modify the structure of semantic word association networks of children and adults and if the networks present a small-world structure and a scale-free distribution which are typical of natural languages. Three age groups of Brazilian Portuguese speakers (children, adults and elderly people) participated in the experiment. Quantitative and qualitative measures suggested that adults and elderly speakers have similar network structures. Children's network showed fewer nodes, connections and clusters, and longer inter-node distances. All networks presented a small-world structure, but they did not show entirely scale-free distributions. These results suggest that from childhood to adulthood, there is an increase not only in the number of words semantically linked to a target but also an increase in the connectivity of the network

    Casimir type effects for scalar fields interacting with material slabs

    We study the field theoretical model of a scalar field in presence of spacial inhomogeneities in form of one and two finite width mirrors (material slabs). The interaction of the scalar field with the defect is described with position-dependent mass term. For the single layer system we develop a rigorous calculation method and derive explicitly the propagator of the theory, S-matrix elements and the Casimir self-energy of the slab. Detailed investigation of particular limits of self-energy is presented, and connection to know cases is discussed. The calculation method is found applicable to the two mirrors case as well. By means of it we derive the corresponding Casimir energy and analyze it. For particular values of the parameters of the model the obtained results recover the Lifshitz formula. We also propose a procedure to obtain unambiguously the finite Casimir \textit{self}-energy of a single slab without reference to any renormalizations. We hope that our approach can be applied to calculation of Casimir self-energies in other demanded cases (such as dielectric ball, etc.)Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, published version, significant changes in Section 4.
