Contemporaneity of Spain rural architecture intervention and economic sustainability
From the second half of the 20th century onwards, Spanish rural architecture has suffered a transformation regarding its farming and ranching model. The economic unsustainability of the family economy has led to further action for the viability of the system. This transformation has meant a new mindset to the owner of the farm and livestock, who had to consider whether continuity was given to the exploitation or the countryside/field was changed and adapted to a new use such as rural tourism, restoration, or for collective uses such as holiday camps, cultural centers or others. Owners who have decided to continue the exploitation they were developing have had to industrialize it and thus extend it in a considerable percentage. That has meant the need to intervene significantly in the rural architectural heritage. A wide and varied range of results has been obtained in these interventions: from the fossilization or destruction of assets, to the achievement of harmony and coexistence between tradition and modernity in this heritage, the result of which represents the contemporaneity of rural architecture.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Consumers' Behavior and the Bertrand Paradox: An ACE approach
We analyze the classical Bertrand model when consumers exhibit some strategic behavior in deciding from which seller they will buy. We use two related but different tools. Both consider a probabilistic learning (or evolutionary) mechanism, and in the two of them consumers' behavior in uences the competition between the sellers. The results obtained show that, in general, developing some sort of loyalty is a good strategy for the buyers as it works in their best interest. First, we consider a learning procedure described by a deterministic dynamic system and, using strong simplifying assumptions, we can produce a description of the process behavior. Second, we use nite automata to represent the strategies played by the agents and an adaptive process based on genetic algorithms to simulate the stochastic process of learning. By doing so we can relax some of the strong assumptions used in the rst approach and still obtain the same basic results. It is suggested that the limitations of the rst approach (analytical) provide a good motivation for the second approach (Agent-Based). Indeed, although both approaches address the same problem, the use of Agent-Based computational techniques allows us to relax hypothesis and overcome the limitations of the analytical approach.Agent-Based Computational Economics, Evolutionary Game Theory, Imperfect Competition
Complementarities between Mathematical and Computational Modeling: The Case of the Repeated Prisoners' Dilemma
We study the properties of the well known Replicator Dynamics when applied to a finitely repeated version of the Prisoners' Dilemma game. We characterize the behavior of such dynamics under strongly simplifying assumptions (i.e. only 3 strategies are available) and show that the basin of attraction of defection shrinks as the number of repetitions increases. After discussing the difficulties involved in trying to relax the 'strongly simplifying assumptions' above, we approach the same model by means of simulations based on genetic algorithms. The resulting simulations describe a behavior of the system very close to the one predicted by the replicator dynamics without imposing any of the assumptions of the mathematical model. Our main conclusion is that mathematical and computational models are good complements for research in social sciences. Indeed, while computational models are extremely useful to extend the scope of the analysis to complex scenarios hard to analyze mathematically, formal models can be useful to verify and to explain the outcomes of computational models.Computational Economics, Model-To-Model Analysis, Genetic Algorithms, Evolutionary Game Theory, Prisoners' Dilemma

Integration of sexual trauma in a religious narrative: transformation, resolution and growth among contemplative nuns
The psychological consequences of sexual abuse are generally serious and enduring, particularly when the perpetrator is known and trusted by the survivor. This paper explores the experiences of five contemplative nuns who were sexually abused by priests and the spiritual journeys that followed. In the context of an ethnographic study of contemplative practice, participant observation and in-depth interviews were used to examine the ways that the nuns sought to make sense of their experiences through a long process of solitary introspection. The pursuit of meaning was shaped by religious beliefs relating to forgiveness, sacrifice, and salvation. Thus, trauma was transformed into a symbolic religious narrative that shaped their sense of identity. They were able to restructure core beliefs and to manage their current relationships with priests more securely. They described regaining their spiritual well-being in ways that suggest a form of posttraumatic spiritual growth. We conclude by discussing the findings in the light of the existing literature on the interaction of trauma and spirituality

Sequence of thinking and acting in strategy making
This paper gives an answer to the continuing emergent-deliberate debate. Thinking and acting are two outstanding features of this controversy. What is needed in the field is a framework that can explain under what circumstances each of these two features takes place along the strategy-making process. The focus of the paper is on the sequence of thinking and acting in the strategy-making process. A framework is developed to show how thinking co-evolves with action in a succession of strategic activities. Within boundaries, strategic activities are carried forward by social automatic behaviour, following a set pattern. Yet, when an action crosses a certain threshold, a different condition of awareness is achieved. Similarly, thought can cross an equivalent threshold, giving rise to consciousness. Either condition enhances the organization's ability to make changes in the direction of its strategic activity.strategy-making process; strategic activities;
Fluxes and (co-)variances of reacting scalars in the convective boundary layer
The effects of chemistry on the transport and the mixing of reacting scalars in the convective atmospheric boundary layer (CBL) are investigated. To do this, we use large-eddy simulation (LES) to calculate explicitly the different terms of the flux and (co)variance budget equations and to analyse in particular the role of the chemical term with respect to the thermodynamical terms. We examine a set of chemical cases that are representative of various turbulent reacting flows. The chemical scheme involves two reacting scalars undergoing a second-order reaction. In addition, we study a chemical cycle, based on a first- and a second-order reaction, to study the behaviour of chemical systems in equilibrium in turbulent flows. From the budget analysis, we found that the chemical terms become more relevant when the chemical timescale is similar to the turbulent timescale. In order to detemine the importance of the chemical terms, we compared these terms to the dynamical terms of the budget equations. For the flux of reactants, the chemical term becomes the dominant sink in the bulk of the CBL. As a result, flux profiles of reacting scalars have non-linear shapes. For the covariance, which accounts for the segregation of species in the CBL, the chemical term can act as a sink or source term. Consequently, reacting scalar covariance profiles deviate considerably from the inert scalar profile. When the chemistry is in equilibrium, the chemical term becomes negligible and therefore the flux and (co-)variance profiles are similar to those of inert scalrs. On the basis of the previous budget results, we develop a parameterisation that represents the segregation of reacting species in large-scale models under convective conditions. The parameterisation is applied to an atmospheric chemical mechanism that accounts for ozone formation and depletion in the CBL.
