TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE IMPORTANCE, AND IMPACT OF NATURAL LANGUAG INTERFACES TO DATABASES

    Get PDF
This paper integrates diverse literature on natural language interfaces to databases, most of which emphasize technical issues. It formalizes one of the only categorizations of interfaces proposed in the literature. It also suggest how these systems may impact organizational activities, information systems usage, and decision makers\u27 performance. A survey of information systems professionals regarding the use, role, importance, and perceptions about natural language interfaces is reported. The findings may be specially useful for developing implementation strategies for natural language based systems and further research in this area

Changing Inside, Watching Outside: Understanding Business Model Adaptations to Gide Information Technology Decisions

    Get PDF
In this paper, we explore the reasons for the survival of some Internet start-ups within the framework of organizational adaptation, and propose that the performance of a firm in a fast-changing environment is related to the adaptability of its business model. Our motivation is the lack of empirical work on firm adaptation in a hyper-competitive environment. We use the event-study methodology to assess the impact of 885 business model changes undertaken by 20 dot-coms. Combining the concept of business models with fine- grained longitudinal data, we argue for the value of external indicators to management when engaging in internal change. We show that the market rewarded certain types of changes more favorably than others, and suggest that firms could use market reactions to guide their evolution and IT investments. This paper presents the first empirical test of business model changes, and validates the notions put forward by earlier authors of the significant future benefits accruing to firms that adapt consistently

Restructuring in Telecommunications and its Market Impacts: An Event-Study Analysis

    Get PDF
The aim of the study is to present a detailed assessment of the major strategic changes in the telecommunications industry and their impact on market returns. Using a global sample of major telecom companies, significant events related to restructuring were identified and then assessed in terms of their favorable or unfavorable impacts. Based on the methodology of event-study analysis with GARCH specification, the impact of events was tested after incorporating dummy variables of different lengths (7, 15 and 20). Simultaneously, subsequent to a regression, Cumulative Abnormal Returns (CAR) were calculated within a variable event window of 7, 15 and 20 Days. Market returns were studied starting from 1996 until 2008. The results show interesting patterns in terms of how the market views restructuring in the business model of telecom companies, organizational structure, alliances and mergers, and technological platform changes. Countries differ significantly in how they view telecoms restructuring and what changes are considered beneficial by investor and which ones are not

A New Cryptographic Strategy for Digital Images

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new image block cipher encryption strategy for gray scale images using a different set of secret key and sizes is proposed. Initially, the swapping and dispersion is done without keys and in second stage the image is mixed with the chirikov map involving first secret key.  'N' rounds are taken to complete this process. The blended image is divided into blocks of block size 8X8.These blocks are also swapped to achieve good confusion. For making the encryption scheme more sturdy in each block the transmutation of pixels is done with the modified logistic map having three more secret keys.  The proposed scheme is simple, rapid and sensitive to the secret key. Due to the high order of substitution, common attacks such as linear and differential cryptanalysis are unattainable. The experimental results show that the proposed encryption technique is effective and has high security features.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v4i3.632

Assessing the Impact of Decision Process on Effectiveness of Strategic IT Decisions: A Triangulation Approach

    Get PDF
Research on strategic information systems planning (SISP) has been characterized by a heavy emphasis on normative models for IT strategy formulation. Numerous approaches to formulating strategic plans and for designing IT planning systems have been suggested in the literature. Despite this, evidence from empirical studies indicates that IT executives have a great deal of trouble in translating plans into actions and specific decisions. Hence, our knowledge on IT planning needs to be supplemented with an understanding of strategic IT decisions and the processes underlying them

Harnessing a knowledge worker’s competency: Lessons from the software development teams

    Get PDF
In this conceptual paper, we propose that the work force can no longer be understood only as a factor of production, but must be projected as a strategic core competency of any organization. The “knowledge-based”, post-industrial economy has lead to a higher degree of pressure on the corporations to nurture and enhance their key strategic resource viz. the Knowledge worker(K-worker). Based on the resource based view and firm strategy, we hereby define the core human competency of the K-worker as a firm specific, rent-generating resource manifested in the behavior pattern of its employees that is aligned with a firm’s core business activities. Besides, our literature survey of the software developer’s field suggests the key business imperatives of future orientation, customer orientation, team work, problem resolution and quality. Hence, these five are hypothesized as the key human competency determinants of a software developer or a K-worker.Thus, our novel approach presupposes that the human competency grows with and around the key business activities of a business organization. The utility of this approach is projected through the lens of the systems view via the fifth discipline and integrated with the quality management practices to build a bulwark for the nurturing of human core competencies. At the heart of this systemic thinking is a shift of mind better termed as “metanoia”.We thus emphasize that k-worker management needs a more individualized and customized appreciation unlike what has been the norm so far. This strategic human competency approach is then the crucial ground for a learning enabled organization of the future that is struggling under enormous pressure of competition in today’s landscape

Continuous Adaptation in a High-Velocity Environment: A Study of the Dot-Com Experience

    Get PDF
In this study, we examine the phenomenon of the decline in valuation of dot-com organizations and propose that dot-com organizations that have continuously altered their business model in response to the environment have been rewarded by superior valuations in the market place. We first present the dominant perspectives in organizational adaptation research, and discuss their relevance to the current study. Using the concept of business models, we investigate the strategic adaptation paths of 22 dot-com organizations in the period from 1998 through 2001 and correlate them against the performance of their share prices over the same period

Pitch Control of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine

    Get PDF
Wind energy is fast becoming the most preferable alternative to conventional sources of electric power. Owing to the perennial availability of wind and the considerable range of power control, wind turbines are now coming up in almost all parts of the world. In the early days of development, wind turbines were designed to rotate at constant speed through pitch control or stall control. The modern wind turbines implement pitch control in order to tap maximum energy at wind speeds lower than rated wind speed. In this project, three different models of pitch actuator system have been studied and a discrete time adaptive PID model has been proposed where the gains of the PID controller are modified based on the time response parameters of the previous time cycle. It is expected to offer better control over a wide range of wind speeds. Keywords: Pitch control, renewable energy, adaptive PID Control, Wind Energy Conversion System

The Multidimensional Nature of Organizational Commitment Among Information Systems Personnel

    Get PDF
Two distinct views of organizational commitment are examined in this study. Affective commitment describes an employee\u27s emotional attachment to, identification with, and involvement in the organization. Continuance commitment is a behavioral view of commitment and describes an attachment to an organization based on side-bets, or extraneous interests, such as pensions and seniority, which create costs in leaving an organization. These two dimensions are empirically examined for the case of 312 information systems (IS) employees. These findings demonstrate the importance of distinguishing between commitment based on a desire to stay in an organization and commitment based on a need to stay because of other factors, as well as the importance of fostering affective commitment in organizations
