Sharing Innovation. The Acceptability of Off-site Industrialized Systems for Housing
From the sixties, innovation and industrialization have been a returning mantra for the construction sector at every new building cycle passage after an economic crisis, as a tool of overcoming difficulties. This positivism has always been disregarded, especially for housing and for Italy. To avoid this dynamic recur-rence even in the current ecological transition passage, research must provide, in parallel with innovative products and techniques, innovative cultural approaches so that extraordinary products and techniques can be accepted by the market, demon-strating how the synergy between them leads to a high added value for sustainable quality of living. Most of the actors (from designers to builders and maintainers) agree that innovative systems, especially industrialized off-site, are more sustainable, espe-cially today when sustainability and resilience are the core of the construction sector; despite this, these systems are struggling to spread. This contribution focuses on acceptability and decision-making processes that lead to innovative choices, iden-tifying the innovation of the functional, social and economic management of the buildings as the “missing ring” for housing. This acceptability has certainly increased today because of new form of “atypical” living, such as senior/student and temporary housing and co-living, which contribute to intensifying the demand of “industrial-ized”, flexible, affordable and reliable houses. Technological innovation, in fact, actives only if technical innovation is combined with strategies and new approaches in organization, marketing and after-sales services focused on sharing and partici-pation. Through an example of a realized off-site transformable residential building and case studies of new form of management, this contribution proposes innovation perspectives capable of overcoming design and decision-making obstacles to the spread of off-site systems, also identifying in the institutional sustainability one of the cores of this subject
Aerosol activation and cloud processing in the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM5-HAM
A parameterization for cloud processing is presented that calculates activation of aerosol particles to cloud drops, cloud drop size, and pH-dependent aqueous phase sulfur chemistry. The parameterization is implemented in the global aerosol-climate model ECHAM5-HAM. The cloud processing parameterization uses updraft speed, temperature, and aerosol size and chemical parameters simulated by ECHAM5-HAM to estimate the maximum supersaturation at the cloud base, and subsequently the cloud drop number concentration (CDNC) due to activation. In-cloud sulfate production occurs through oxidation of dissolved SO2 by ozone and hydrogen peroxide. The model simulates realistic distributions for annually averaged CDNC although it is underestimated especially in remote marine regions. On average, CDNC is dominated by cloud droplets growing on particles from the accumulation mode, with smaller contributions from the Aitken and coarse modes. The simulations indicate that in-cloud sulfate production is a potentially important source of accumulation mode sized cloud condensation nuclei, due to chemical growth of activated Aitken particles and to enhanced coalescence of processed particles. The strength of this source depends on the distribution of produced sulfate over the activated modes. This distribution is affected by uncertainties in many parameters that play a direct role in particle activation, such as the updraft velocity, the aerosol chemical composition and the organic solubility, and the simulated CDNC is found to be relatively sensitive to these uncertainties
Housing Design: Furniture or Fixtures? Accommodating Change through Technological and Typological Innovation
The recent global pandemic has sped up architectural research in residential design aimed at rethinking housing layouts, services, and construction methods to accommodate the changing needs of the rapidly evolving contemporary society. New typological and technological design approaches are required to address, on the one hand, the adaptability of the plan as a result of higher flexibility and temporariness in familiar and working patterns, together with a downsizing of the layouts to ensure affordability and quality of life. On the other hand, the issues of sustainability and circular economy require specific attention to interpret the resilience of the building and the reuse/recycle of the fit-out systems. The paper aims at interpreting the notion of integration between fixtures and furnishing in housing design, based on a comprehensive literature review enriched with a case study analysis that shows design concepts and approaches rooted in theories and experiences of 20th-century architecture. Principles, potentials, and barriers to the development of integrated systems are highlighted and the possible implementation of industrialised production components, the potential for modularity, flexibility, and assembly are discussed
Spectral decomposition of starbursts and AGNs in 5-8 micron Spitzer IRS spectra of local ULIRGs
We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of
68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique
allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst
(SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model
provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the
bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron
than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs
can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominant power
source for extreme infrared activity, since ~85% of ULIRG luminosity arises
from the SB component. Nonetheless an AGN is present in the majority (46/68) of

bcl-2, p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression is related to the degree of differentiation in thyroid carcinomas.
Thyroid carcinomas are heterogeneous in terms of histology, clinical presentation, treatment response and prognosis. Since bcl-2 and p53 gene alterations are frequently involved in both lymphoid and epithelial malignancies, we analysed the expression of bcl-2, p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in a group of 134 patients with thyroid neoplasms. The same markers were evaluated in fetal and adult normal thyroids as well as in 40 benign lesions. The study was carried out by immunocytochemistry on archival material using antibodies against bcl-2 and p53 protein on tissue sections of 40 adenomas (As), 20 medullary carcinomas (MCs), 70 well-differentiated carcinomas (WDCs), 20 poorly differentiated carcinomas (PDCs) and 24 undifferentiated carcinomas (UCs). bcl-2 immunoreactivity was detected in 36 out of 40 (90%) As, 20 out of 20 (100%) MCs, 60 out of 70 (85.7%) WDCs, 20 out of 20 (100%) PDCs, and 8 out of 24 (33.3%) of UCs. p53 expression was present in 11.4% of WDCs, 5% of PDCs, 5% of MCs and 62.5% of UCs. By contrast, no p53 immunoreactivity was detected in 40 adenomas and in all the normal thyroid tissues studied. We observed a positive correlation between the expression of p53 and PCNA (r = 0.42; P = 0.035) in a group of UCs, but not in WDCs, PDCs and MCs. Neither p53 nor bcl-2 expression were correlated with clinicopathological parameters, such as age, sex, pTNM and survival. Our results suggest that in tumours of the follicular epithelium p53 and bcl-2 protein abnormalities are associated with more advanced carcinomas and especially with undifferentiated carcinomas, while they are only rarely altered in tumours of the parafollicular C cells
Circumnuclear Star Clusters in the Galaxy Merger NGC 6240, Observed with Keck Adaptive Optics and HST
We discuss images of the central ~10 kpc (in projection) of the galaxy merger
NGC 6240 at H and K' bands, taken with the NIRC2 narrow camera on Keck II using
natural guide star adaptive optics. We detect 28 star clusters in the NIRC2
images, of which only 7 can be seen in the similar-spatial-resolution, archival
WFPC2 Planetary Camera data at either B or I bands. Combining the NIRC2 narrow
camera pointings with wider NICMOS NIC2 images taken with the F110W, F160W, and
F222M filters, we identify a total of 32 clusters that are detected in at least
one of these 5 infrared (lambda > 1 micron) bandpasses. By comparing to
instantaneous burst, stellar population synthesis models (Bruzual & Charlot
2003), we estimate that most of the clusters are consistent with being ~15 Myr
old and have photometric masses ranging from 7E5 M_sun to 4E7 M_sun. The total
contribution to the star formation rate (SFR) from these clusters is
approximately 10 M_sun/year, or ~10% of the total SFR in the nuclear region. We
use these newly discovered clusters to estimate the extinction toward NGC
6240's double nuclei, and find values of A_V as high as 14 magnitudes along
some sightlines, with an average extinction of A_V~7 mag toward sightlines
within ~3 arcsec of the double nuclei.Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures; Accepted for publication by Ap
BIM and Mixed Reality for the New Management of Storage Area
The fourth industrial revolution that has touched the last decades, has involved several sectors including the construction world. The digitization and automation of industrial processes has implemented the development of connection platforms that can communicate many information for different users such as Smart Glasses or immersive headset. Most of the time, innovation does not only concern the technological field, but involves the entire organizational and managerial sphere. Digitization allows new tools such as Building Information Modelling to expand its application scale, making it an excellent tool for integrating and sharing data with their own information management systems (MES). The aims of this contribution are reproducing a virtual warehouse through parametric digital modelling, to which all the management data have been associated; for example, the average stock, the rotation index, etc. Thanks to the export of the database extrapolated from its management system of the analyzed industry, it was possible to define the correct visualization of the virtual model, interrogating the real data coming from the real warehouse. Through Smart Glasses, the user of the area could allocate the products in the correct position and update in the cloud the information properties associated with the individual product and the entire department. The use of virtual platforms for the visualization and the sharing of the data, facilitate the optimization of the industrial processes
The Structure of Active Merger Remnant NGC 6240 from IRAC Observations
NGC 6240 is a rare object in the local universe: an active merger remnant
viewed at the point of merging where two active galactic nuclei are visible. We
present IRAC data of this object, providing high sensitivity maps of the
stellar and PAH distribution in this complicated system. We use photometry to
analyze the variation in these distributions with radius and provide an SED in
the four IRAC bands: 3.6 microns, 4.5 microns, 5.8 microns and 8.0 microns. We
fit the radial profiles of the 3.6 micron band to r^.25 and exponential
profiles to evaluate the structure of the remnant. Finally, we compare the IRAC
images with multi-wavelength data and examine how outflows in the X-ray, Halpha
and CO correlate with 8 micron emission. The results support the general
picture of NGC 6240 as a system experiencing a major merger and transitioning
from a disk galaxy to a spheroid. The sensitivity of IRAC to low surface
brightness mid-infrared features provides detailed information on the extended
distributions of stars and dust in this rare system.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
Pain Distraction During Awake Major Colorectal Surgery: Supporting Patients Beyond the COVID-19 Era. Preliminary Findings
Introduction: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, hospitals rapidly ran out of intensive care beds. Because minimally invasive surgery and general anaesthesia are both aerosol-generating procedures, their use has become controversial. We report a case series of awake undelayable colorectal surgeries which, innovatively, took advantage of intraoperative pain distraction. Moreover, we describe our frugal solution to social distancing in psychological support of inpatients.
Methods: Between October 2020 and February 2021, five patients underwent acute-care colorectal surgery under locoregional anaesthesia in our department. A 3D mobile theatre (3DMT) was used during the operation to distract the patients from pain. Vital signs, pain intensity, ergonomic comfort/discomfort, sense of presence and distress were intraoperatively monitored. A postoperative “cuddle delivery” service was instituted: video messages from relatives and close friends were delivered daily to the patient through the 3DMT. Emotional effects were investigated through clinical interviews conducted by a psychologist at our hospital.
Results: Both intraoperative and postoperative pain were always well controlled. Conversion to general anaesthesia and postoperative intensive support/monitoring were never necessary. The “cuddle delivery” initiative helped patients fill the emotional gap created by the strict containment measures implemented inside the hospital, distracting them from emotional anxiety and physical pain.
Conclusions: During the next phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and even after the COVID-19 era, awake laparotomy under locoregional anaesthesia may be a crucial option for delivering acute-care surgery to selected patients when intensive care beds are unavailable and postponing surgery is unacceptable. We also introduce a new modality for the provision of emotional support during postoperative inpatient care as a countermeasure to the restrictions imposed by social distancing measures
