    This study concerns the comparison of three approaches to assessment: Data-Driven Decision Making, Assessment for Learning, and Diagnostic Testing. Although the three approaches claim to be beneficial with regard to student learning, no clear study into the relationships and distinctions between these approaches exists to date. The goal of this study was to investigate the extent to which the three approaches can be shaped into an integrative formative approach towards assessment. The three approaches were compared on nine characteristics of assessment. The results suggest that although the approaches seem to be contradictory with respect to some characteristics, it is argued that they could complement each other despite these differences.     Determinants of Lung Fissure Completeness

    RATIONALE: New advanced bronchoscopic treatment options for patients with severe COPD have led to increased interest for COPD phenotyping, including fissure completeness. OBJECTIVES: We investigated clinical, environmental, and genetic factors contributing to fissure completeness in patients with and without COPD. METHODS: We used data of 9926 participants of the COPDGene study who underwent chest computed tomography (CT). Fissure completeness was calculated from CT scans following quantitative CT analysis at baseline and five-year follow-up. The clinical and environmental factors sex, race, smoking, COPD, emphysema, maternal smoking during pregnancy and maternal COPD were tested for impact on fissure completeness. Genome-wide association analyses were performed separately in non-Hispanic whites and African-Americans. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: African-Americans had significant higher fissure completeness than non-Hispanic whites for all three fissures (p<0.001). There was no change in fissure completeness between baseline and five-year follow-up. For all fissures, No clinically relevant differences in fissure completeness were found for other clinical or environmental factors, including COPD severity. Rs2173623, rs264866, rs2407284, rs7310342, rs4904145, rs6504172, and rs7209556 showed genome-wide significant associations with fissure completeness in non-Hispanic whites. In African-Americans, rs264866, rs4904145 and rs6504172 were identified as significant associations. Rs2173623, rs6504172, and rs7209556 lead to WNT5A and HOXB antisense RNA expression, which play an important role during embryogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Fissure completeness is genetically determined and not dependent on age, sex, smoking status, the presence and severity of COPD including exacerbation frequency, maternal smoking during pregnancy, or maternal COPD

    Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment via Bayesian Evaluation of Informative Diagnostic Hypotheses

    There exist diverse approaches that can be used for cognitive diagnostic assessment, such as mastery testing, constrained latent class analysis, rule space methodology, diagnostic cognitive modeling, and person-fit analysis. Each of these approaches can be used within 1 of the 4 psychometric perspectives on diagnostic testing discussed by Borsboom (2008), that is, the dimensional, diagnostic, constructivist, and causal system perspectives. Bayesian evaluation of informative diagnostic hypotheses is an alternative for each of the other approaches that is more flexible in the diagnostic hypotheses that can be evaluated, and it can be used in each of the 4 psychometric perspectives on diagnostic testing. After being formulated, informative diagnostic hypotheses are evaluated by means of the Bayes factor using only the data from the person to be diagnosed.     Task beliefs and the voluntary use of the empty number line in third-grade subtraction and addition

    This study explored the relationships between task beliefs about the empty number line (ENL), mathematical ability, gender, and voluntary ENL use in multi-digit subtraction and addition. One hundred twenty-three Dutch third-grade students and nine teachers from six schools participated in this study. The multilevel path analysis showed that task beliefs about the ENL mediated the relationship between students’ mathematical ability and their voluntary ENL use. No gender differences were found in the multilevel path analysis. Finally, the results show that task beliefs about the ENL and voluntary ENL use differed across classrooms. The discussion focuses on the implications of the results for using the ENL in diagnostic assessment

    Using Expert Knowledge for Test Linking

    Linking and equating procedures are used to make the results of different test forms comparable. In the cases where no assumption of random equivalent groups can be made some form of linking design is used. In practice the amount of data available to link the two tests is often very limited due to logistic and security reasons, which affects the precision of linking procedures. This study proposes to enhance the quality of linking procedures based on sparse data by using Bayesian methods which combine the information in the linking data with background information captured in informative prior distributions. We propose two methods for the elicitation of prior knowledge about the difference in difficulty of two tests from subject-matter experts and explain how these results can be used in the specification of priors. To illustrate the proposed methods and evaluate the quality of linking with and without informative priors, an empirical example of linking primary school mathematics tests is presented.     Diagnostic assessment in third-grade subtraction: the relation between bridging errors, number of errors and mathematical ability

    Learning to solve subtraction problems that require borrowing (e.g., 83–57=) is challenging, and these problems often cause ‘bridging’ errors, such as the smaller-from-larger error. This study explores how bridging errors in subtraction are related to students’ mathematical ability. The study involved 694 third-grade students and 35 teachers from 25 Dutch schools. Multilevel regression analyses showed that the number of bridging errors was positively related to the students’ mathematical ability, after controlling for the total number of errors in subtraction. Thus, the students who had a high proportion of bridging errors within the total number of errors had a relatively higher mathematical ability compared to the students who had a low proportion of bridging errors. This result implies that diagnosing bridging errors may help to identify where students’ stand within their mathematical development. The practical implications of this result for the design of diagnostic instruments are addressed in the discussion section

    Two-Year Follow-up of a Randomized Controlled Nutrition Intervention Trial in Very Low-Birth-Weight Infants

    Very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants are at risk for neurodevelopment impairment. This study assessed the effect of early aggressive parenteral nutrition (PN) on long-term outcome in VLBW infants. Directly after birth, VLBW infants (birth weight <1500 g, n = 142) were randomized to 5 different PN regimes. Controls (n = 46) received glucose and standard-dose amino acids (AAs; 2.4 g/[kg·d]) from birth onward and pure soybean oil fat emulsion (SOY) on the second day of life. Two intervention groups received glucose, standard-dose AAs, and lipids from birth onward: SOY (n = 24) or mixed fat emulsion (MIX, n = 25). The 2 other intervention groups received glucose, high-dose AAs (3.6 g/[kg·d]), and lipids from birth onward: SOY (n = 24) or MIX (n = 23). The primary outcome of this follow-up study was the composite outcome of "death or major disability" at 2 years corrected age. Secondary outcomes were death, major disabilities, neurodevelopmental scores, and anthropometry. Follow-up rate was 92% (n = 134). Thirty-five (26%) infants had died or had a major disability, with no differences between intervention groups and controls. Increased odds for death were observed in the standard-dose AA-MIX group (odds ratio, 5.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-27.0). Neurodevelopmental scores and incidence of major disabilities did not differ between groups. Growth in the high-dose AA-MIX group was enhanced compared with growth in controls at 2 years corrected age (+0.51 [0.01-1.02] weight SDS). This randomized controlled hypothesis-generating study demonstrated no beneficial effect of early high-dose AA administration and mixed fat emulsions on survival and neurodevelopmental outcome in VLBW infants, although growth was enhance

    Adaptive regulation of amino acid metabolism on early parenteral lipid and high-dose amino acid administration in VLBW infants - a randomized, controlled trial

    An anabolic state can be achieved upon intravenous amino acid administration during the immediate postnatal phase despite a low energy intake. The optimal dosing of amino acid and energy intake has yet to be established. The aim was to quantify the efficacy of early initiation of parenteral lipids and increased amounts of amino acids on metabolism and protein accretion in very low birth weight infants. 28 very low birth weight infants were randomized to receive parenteral nutrition with glucose and either 2.4 g amino acids/(kg·d) (control group), 2.4 g amino acids/(kg·d) plus 2-3 g lipid/(kg·d) (AA + lipid group), or 3.6 g amino acids/(kg·d) plus 2-3 g lipid/(kg·d) (high AA + lipid group) from birth onward. On postnatal day 2, we performed a stable isotope study with [1-(13)C]phenylalanine, [ring-D4]tyrosine, [U-(13)C6,(15)N]leucine, and [methyl-D3]α-ketoisocaproic acid to quantify intermediate amino acid metabolism. The addition of lipids only had no effect on phenylalanine metabolism, whereas the addition of both lipids and additional amino acids increased the amount of phenylalanine used for protein synthesis. In addition, high amino acid intake significantly increased the rate of hydroxylation of phenylalanine to tyrosine, increasing the availability of tyrosine for protein synthesis. However, it also increased urea concentrations. Increasing energy intake from 40 to 60 kcal/(kg·d) did not increase protein efficiency as measured by phenylalanine kinetics. The leucine data were difficult to interpret due to the wide range of results and inconsistency in the data between the phenylalanine and leucine models. High amino acid and energy intakes from birth onwards result in a more anabolic state in very low birth weight infants, but at the expense of higher urea concentrations, which reflects a higher amino acid oxidation. Long-term outcome data should reveal whether this policy deserves routine implementation.
