    Characteristic, Emotional, and Behavioral Problems of Street Adolescent in Bandung October–December 2012

    Background: Street adolescents were psychosocial problem that increased in number each year and was worsened by their low-moral subculture-value that could cause them more vulnerable in having emotional and behavioral problems. This study aims to describe the characteristics, emotional and behavioral problems of the street adolescent in Bandung.Methods: A descriptive study was carried out in October–December 2012. From 22 shelters in Bandung, two shelters (RPA GANK and Pesantren Kolong Nurul Hayat) were selected and organized into 4 areas: Cihampelas, ‘Samsat’, Laswi Street and Kiaracondong. A hundred-seven street adolescents aged 11 to 16 years were participated in this study. They were divided into small groups and filled in the sociodemographic questionnaire and the Indonesian version of standardized Strength and Difficulty Questionnaires (SDQ).  Only 100 questionnaires were filled in completely. Data were analyzed using frequency tabulation and bar chartResults: Sixty-five percent were boys, 53% were aged 11–13 years, and 53% were students, 76% related to more than one sibling, still lived with their families (81%), and had parents. Their parents had low educational background, had job, and implemented  authoritative parenting pattern (41%). In becoming street adolescent, 63% were caused by their own motivation, 81% were children on street, and 55% had lived in the street more than 5 years. Approximately 27% of street adolescents were rated as abnormal on the total difficulty score.  Conclusion: Street adolescent in Bandung still have emotional and behavioral problems, which mostly were boys, in the early adolescence stage, school student, had more than one sibling, permissive parenting pattern, and lived in the street for more than 5 years.     Perception of Universitas Padjadjaran Students towards Psychotic Disorders

    Background: Psychotic disorders have a very high incidence in Indonesia and arethe first rank in terms of the global burden of disability. Students are the frontline in the face of society. The formation of stigma and discrimination  is rooted from  bad perceptions. The aim of this study was to determine and measure Universitas Padjadjaran students’ perceptions towards psychotic disorders and find out why these perceptions can be shaped. Methods: The design of study was a sequential explanatory mixed method research. The population of this study is glittering Universitas Padjadjaran students who were in Jatinangor between batches 2011 to 2013. Samples were taken using cluster and stratified random sampling. Quantitative data retrieval was collected by using a self-administered questionnaire. Next, there would be focused group discussions and in-depth interviews which discussed the results of the quantitative data collection then interpreted them qualitatively. Result: The percentage of students at Universitas Padjadjaran with perception of psychotic disorders in good category was 19.04%, 80.96% unfavorable category, and bad 0% (n=126). Besides various relevant opinion found why these perceptions were formed, such as a lack of education on students towards psychotic disorders, the existence of stigma based on life experience of psychotic patients, the lack of social media and physical campaign towards the psychotic disorders. Conclusions: The perception of Universitas Padjadjaran students towards psychotic disorders is still relatively unfavorable, therefore literation towards psychotic disorders should be provided through education, campaigns, social media utilization by psychiatrists and the government

    From 10–19, adolescence is a transition from childhood to adulthood. There will be changes in the shape and function of the body in a reasonably short time. Sufficient and adequate nutrition for adolescents is one factor affecting their reproductive health. This community service aimed to monitor nutritional status and detect early signs of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED). Monitoring of nutritional status is carried out for adolescents, especially young women. Physical health and healthy reproductive organs are essential in preparation for becoming healthy expectant mothers who can later give birth to a healthy generation. Holistic health education was needed in adolescents' growth to become better human beings in terms of their health. This activity was carried out in May 2023 at Junior High School, YPI Ciparay, and Bandung Regency. The target audience was young girls in 7th grade; there were 82 people. At the time, the students filled out questionnaires about their characteristics. Then the team measured the anthropometrics to determine the nutritional status and the incidence of CED by weighing, measuring height, and measuring upper arm circumference. The measurements showed that the nutritional status based on body mass index for most female students was standard, about 60.97%, and 41.46% of female students were CED. Counselling and health information were also provided holistically to increase the girls' understanding of their health status

    Effectiveness of Multimedia and Education using Lecturing Method on Role of Vitamin D for Health Cadres

    Objective: To investigate the differences in the effectiveness of learning methods between multimedia and lecture methods on benefits of vitamin D for health from the perspective of health cadres' knowledge,. Methods: This study was an experimental study with a pre-and post-test design. The knowledge of health cadres was assessed using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed before and after the health cadres received vitamin D education by two different methods. Data analysis was conducted using paired and independent t-test with a significance level of p <0.05. Results: A total of 59 health cadres participated in this study. Prior to education, the median test score for the multimedia group was 9.45, while the median test score for the lecture group was 82.70. After the education, the multimedia group and the lecture group got a median test score of 10.84. The multimedia method and lecture method significantly increased health cadres' knowledge with p-values of <0.02 and 0.003, respectively. There was no difference in the multimedia method's effectiveness compared to the lecture method in increasing the knowledge of health workers about vitamin D's role in health (p=0.62). Conclusion: The multimedia education method is as effective as the lecture method in increasing health cadres' knowledge about the role of vitamin D in health.

    Translation, Validity, and Reliability of Mental Health Literacy and Help-Seeking Behavior Questionnaires in Indonesia

    Background and Aim: Mental health is an integral part of adolescent wellbeing. However, only few adolescents understand the importance of mental health and are aware of the right time to seek help. Lack of knowledge and stigma may impede help-seeking behavior. To assess these aspects, three questionnaires have been developed in the English language. This study aims to assess the validity and reliability of an Indonesian version of the Mental Health Literacy and Help-Seeking Behavior set of questionnaires among adolescents in Indonesia.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that used The Mental Health Literacy and Help-Seeking Behavior set of questionnaires developed by Kutcher and Wei. The set consists of three questionnaires: the Mental Health Knowledge, Attitude Toward Mental Health, and Help-Seeking Behavior questionnaire. The study was conducted between October 2020 and January 2021 with 68 first-year medical students at the University of Indonesia, who represented adolescents in a transitional phase. The questionnaires were translated into the Indonesian language by a bilingual psychiatrist and reviewed by 10 expert psychiatrists to determine content validity [Item-Level Content Validity Index (I-CVI) and Scale-Level Content Validity Index (S-CVI)]. Cronbach's alpha values were used to assess internal consistency (reliability).Results: The content validity test produced positive results with an I-CVI scores of 0.7–1.0 and S-CVI scores of 0.87, 0.90, and 0.99 for the knowledge, attitude, and help-seeking behavior questionnaires, respectively. For the reliability test, Cronbach's alpha values were 0.780 for the attitude questionnaire and 0.852 for the help-seeking behavior questionnaire, while the value for the knowledge questionnaire was 0.521.Conclusion: The ability to properly measure mental health through the availability of accessible, valid, and understandable tools plays an important role in addressing mental health issues among adolescents. In the current study, the Indonesian translations of all three questionnaires examining knowledge, attitude, and help-seeking behavior were considered to be valid and reliable.</p

    Implementation of palliative care for patients with terminal diseases from the viewpoint of healthcare personnel

    Abstract Objective In Indonesia, palliative care has not been uniformly implemented at all levels of healthcare facilities. Healthcare personnel play an important role in providing that care. This study aimed to explore the current conditions and expectations regarding palliative care from the perspective of healthcare personnel. Results A qualitative study was conducted with 12 physicians and five nurses from December 2017 to June 2018. In-depth interviews of these professionals were conducted. The responses were subjected to inductive thematic analysis, generating five themes and 24 subthemes. The themes were (1) family and environment, including barriers and contributions to palliative care; (2) numbers and competence of healthcare providers; (3) accessibility of palliative care; (4) case management of patient’s and family’s problems by healthcare personnel; and (5) barriers or enabling factors from the healthcare system. Patients, family members, and healthcare personnel contribute to case management. Attention must be paid to improving access and the healthcare system for thorough implementation of palliative care

    Mental Health Problems and Needs among Transitional-Age Youth in Indonesia

    “Transitional-age youth” describes those whose ages range from 16–24 years old. In this phase, the youth face new challenges and new experiences which may increase the risk for having mental health problems, yet not very many seek help from mental health professionals. In Indonesia, no data are available about mental health problems and the needs of transitional-age youth. This study explores common mental health problems experienced during this stage and assesses how they cope with problems and their expectations from health services. This was a cross-sectional study involving 393 Indonesians aged 16–24 years in May 2020. More than 90% of students had financial and academic difficulties and felt lonely. The most prevalent mental health problem among students was anxiety (95.4%). Most of the students, ranging from 90% to 96.4%, had positive coping strategies. However, around 50% of respondents reported self-harming and having suicidal thoughts. The results of subcategories analysis between ages and faculties were similar. Their most important expectations from mental health services included confidentiality (99.2%) and being welcoming and friendly (99.2%). In conclusion, this study highlighted the most common problems transitional-age youth experience in Indonesia. While some of them already knew how to deal with their problems, not all the participants had good coping mechanisms. Their healthcare expectations were also explored, thereby providing a useful background to revise and amend the current conditions

    Psychometric Properties of the Suicidal Ideation Scale in the Indonesian Language

    Introduction: Suicide is one of the leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults, especially in low to middle-income countries. Research found that screening for suicidal ideation in non-clinical populations such as schools or communities is an important step toward preventing suicide. Despite so, not all screening tools have the capabilities to accurately detect suicidal ideation among adolescents and young adults in non-clinical populations. The Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS) is one of the most used questionnaires to measure suicidal thoughts in non-clinical populations. This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of SIS among adolescents and young adults in Indonesia, especially in non-clinical populations. Methods: After a series of language and cultural adaptations, 1254 senior high school and university students completed the Indonesian version of SIS using 3 standard questionnaires, namely Patient Health Questionnaire-9/PHQ-9, Beck Depression Inventory-II/BDI-II, and Children’s Depression Inventory/CDI. The SIS content validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and concurrent, as well as internal structure validity, were investigated using content validity index (CVI), Cronbach’s Alpha, Pearson product-moment correlation, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), respectively. Results: The result showed that SIS has good to excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Based on the validity indicators, it has satisfactory content and convergent validity, and further support the one-factor and 2-factor model for factorial validity. Both one-factor and 2 factor model are suitable to use in non-clinical settings. Conclusions: SIS is a valid and reliable tool for suicide ideation screening in adolescents and young adults in non-clinical populations. This validated questionnaire can be used in the early detection of suicidal ideation among adolescents and young adults in non-clinical populations, thus contributing to developing strategies and policies to prevent suicide among Indonesian adolescents and young adults at group and institutional levels
