A combined numerical approach for the thermal analysis of a piston water pump
The paper proposes a numerical model for the investigation of a piston water pump under different operating conditions. In particular, the lubricating system is analysed and modelled. The study accounts for the lubrication and friction phenomena, heat transfer, multiphase fluid approach and motion simulation. A computational thermo fluid dynamics approach has been adopted to develop a numerical tool able to simulate the behaviour of the oil during the machine working phases. The CFD approach simulates the moving metal components by means of moving meshes techniques; the friction phenomenon is estimated on the basis of formulations available in literature. The numerical model evaluates the heat transfer between moving metal parts and oil during the operating phases of the system. Furthermore, the heat transfer between oil and environment is calculated, accounting for conduction through the metal crankcase walls. A multiphase fluid approach is used for the simulation of the oil and air mixing during the crank rotation. The heat transfer coefficient predicted by the CFD approach are employed in a lumped and distributed numerical model; the reliability and accuracy of the proposed numerical approach is addressed and validated against experimental results. Experimental data have been collected by means of a thermographic camera and thermocouples. Finally, the tool's predictive capabilities are addressed by simulating different working conditions
Synchronously-pumped OPO coherent Ising machine: benchmarking and prospects
The coherent Ising machine (CIM) is a network of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) that solves for the ground state of Ising problems through OPO bifurcation dynamics. Here, we present experimental results comparing the performance of the CIM to quantum annealers (QAs) on two classes of NP-hard optimization problems: ground state calculation of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model and MAX-CUT. While the two machines perform comparably on sparsely-connected problems such as cubic MAX-CUT, on problems with dense connectivity, the QA shows an exponential performance penalty relative to CIMs. We attribute this to the embedding overhead required to map dense problems onto the sparse hardware architecture of the QA, a problem that can be overcome in photonic architectures such as the CIM
Adjunctive therapy with vitamin c and thiamine in patients treated with steroids for refractory septic shock: A propensity matched before-after, case-control study
Purpose: Triple therapy with steroids, vitamin C and thiamine has been recently proposed as a safe and beneficial in patients with sepsis. In 2017, we added the use of intravenous vitamin C and thiamine in septic shock patients receiving low dose hydrocortisone because poorly responsive to vasopressors. Aim of this study is to verify whether triple therapy rather than steroids alone can improve outcome in patients with refractory shock. Materials and methods: In this before-after retrospective analysis, we compared septic shock patients admitted to our intensive care unit (ICU) who received triple therapy from June 2017 to November 2019 to septic shock patients who received only hydrocortisone from January 2015 to June 2017. Patients of the two study periods were matched 1:1 using a propensity score model. Results: A final cohort of 56 patients treated with triple therapy were matched to 56 patients treated only with steroids. Triple therapy reduced the length of mechanical ventilation (p = 0,01) and showed a trend in lowering the 30-day and hospital mortality compared to therapy with only hydrocortisone. Conclusions: Although with significant limitations, our experience indicated that triple therapy seems to provide an improvement of clinical outcomes in patients with refractory septic shock
Energy efficiency in industry: EU and national policies in Italy and the UK
Energy efficiency, which is one of the pillars of the EU's Energy Union strategy, has been proposed as a solution, namely as a highly effective pathway to improve economic competitiveness and sustainability of the European economy, lower emissions, reduce energy dependency and increase security of supply, and job creation. The paper reviews the EU strategies and policies on energy efficiency and argues that further focus should be placed on industrial energy efficiency. Despite a decline in energy consumption in recent years in industry, this sector is one of the largest users of energy in the EU. Therefore, the paper reviews the extent to which the European and national policies in the selected jurisdictions, such as Italy and the UK address energy efficiency in industry and whether there are any measures in place to promote it
Experimental evidence of antiproton reflection by a solid surface
We report here experimental evidence of the reflection of a large fraction of
a beam of low energy antiprotons by an aluminum wall. This derives from the
analysis of a set of annihilations of antiprotons that come to rest in rarefied
helium gas after hitting the end wall of the apparatus. A Monte Carlo
simulation of the antiproton path in aluminum indicates that the observed
reflection occurs primarily via a multiple Rutherford-style scattering on Al
nuclei, at least in the energy range 1-10 keV where the phenomenon is most
visible in the analyzed data. These results contradict the common belief
according to which the interactions between matter and antimatter are dominated
by the reciprocally destructive phenomenon of annihilation.Comment: 5 pages with 5 figure
Limits on the low energy antinucleon-nucleus annihilations from the Heisenberg principle
We show that the quantum uncertainty principle puts some limits on the
effectiveness of the antinucleon-nucleus annihilation at very low energies.
This is caused by the fact that the realization a very effective short-distance
reaction process implies information on the relative distance of the reacting
particles. Some quantitative predictions are possible on this ground, including
the approximate A-independence of antinucleon-nucleus annihilation rates.Comment: 10 pages, no figure
