MT-SNN: Spiking Neural Network that Enables Single-Tasking of Multiple Tasks
In this paper we explore capabilities of spiking neural networks in solving
multi-task classification problems using the approach of single-tasking of
multiple tasks. We designed and implemented a multi-task spiking neural network
(MT-SNN) that can learn two or more classification tasks while performing one
task at a time. The task to perform is selected by modulating the firing
threshold of leaky integrate and fire neurons used in this work. The network is
implemented using Intel's Lava platform for the Loihi2 neuromorphic chip. Tests
are performed on dynamic multitask classification for NMNIST data. The results
show that MT-SNN effectively learns multiple tasks by modifying its dynamics,
namely, the spiking neurons' firing threshold.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
VALIDATION OF THE PHOTOELECTRIC OPTOGAIT SYSTEM TO MEASURE RACEWALKING BIOMECHANICAL PARAMETERS ON A TREADMILL
The purpose of this pilot study was to validate the Optogait system to measure racewalking biomechanic parameters on a treadmill. Contact time, flight time, cadence and step length are some of the biomechanic parameters which influence the performance in racewalking. Five subjects were analyzed while racewalking at different speeds on a treadmill. The Optogait system was compared with a high speed video used as reference system. Flight time was overestimated by Optogait when compared with the reference system (0.025 ± 0.014 vs 0.023 ± 0.014 seconds, t = -2.43, p \u3c0,05). No differences were found in contact time or step length. Thus, the present study validates the Optogait system to measure racewalking biomechanical parameters on a treadmill
Integral measurement of the 12C(n, p)12B reaction up to 10 GeV
The integral measurement of the 12C(n, p)12B reaction was performed at the neutron time-offlight facility n TOF at CERN. The total number of 12B nuclei produced per neutron pulse of the n TOF
beam was determined using the activation technique in combination with a time-of-flight technique. The
cross section is integrated over the n TOF neutron energy spectrum from reaction threshold at 13.6 MeV
to 10 GeV. Having been measured up to 1 GeV on basis of the 235U(n, f) reaction, the neutron energy
spectrum above 200 MeV has been re-evaluated due to the recent extension of the cross section reference
for this particular reaction, which is otherwise considered a standard up to 200 MeV. The results from the
dedicated GEANT4 simulations have been used to evaluate the neutron flux from 1 GeV up to 10 GeV. The
experimental results related to the 12C(n, p)12B reaction are compared with the evaluated cross sections
from major libraries and with the predictions of different GEANT4 models, which mostly underestimate
the 12B production. On the contrary, a good reproduction of the integral cross section derived from measurements is obtained with TALYS-1.6 calculations, with optimized parameters.European Atomic Energy Communitys (Euratom) Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2011-CHANDA (No. 605203)Narodowe Centrum Nauki (NCN)-UMO-2012/04/M/ST2/00700Croatian Science Foundation-No. 168
Aggrescan3D (A3D) 2.0 : prediction and engineering of protein solubility
Protein aggregation is a hallmark of a growing number of human disorders and constitutes a major bottleneck in the manufacturing of therapeutic proteins. Therefore, there is a strong need of in-silico methods that can anticipate the aggregative properties of protein variants linked to disease and assist the engineering of soluble protein-based drugs. A few years ago, we developed a method for structure-based prediction of aggregation properties that takes into account the dynamic fluctuations of proteins. The method has been made available as the Aggrescan3D (A3D) web server and applied in numerous studies of protein structure-aggregation relationship. Here, we present a major update of the A3D web server to version 2.0. The new features include: extension of dynamic calculations to significantly larger and multimeric proteins, simultaneous prediction of changes in protein solubility and stability upon mutation, rapid screening for functional protein variants with improved solubility, a REST-ful service to incorporate A3D calculations in automatic pipelines, and a new, enhanced web server interface. A3D 2.0 is freely available at: http://biocomp.chem.uw.edu.pl/A3D2

Impact of HbA1c Measurement on Hospital Readmission Rates: Analysis of 70,000 Clinical Database Patient Records
Management of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients has a significant bearing on outcome, in terms of both morbidity and mortality. However, there are few national assessments of diabetes care during hospitalization which could serve as a baseline for change. This analysis of a large clinical database (74 million unique encounters corresponding to 17 million unique patients) was undertaken to provide such an assessment and to find future directions which might lead to improvements in patient safety. Almost 70,000 inpatient diabetes encounters were identified with sufficient detail for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to fit the relationship between the measurement of HbA1c and early readmission while controlling for covariates such as demographics, severity and type of the disease, and type of admission. Results show that the measurement of HbA1c was performed infrequently (18.4%) in the inpatient setting. The statistical model suggests that the relationship between the probability of readmission and the HbA1c measurement depends on the primary diagnosis. The data suggest further that the greater attention to diabetes reflected in HbA1c determination may improve patient outcomes and lower cost of inpatient care
Insights into cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in Caenorhabditis elegans
Cisplatin is the most common drug in first-line chemotherapy against solid tumors. We and others have previously used the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to identify genetic factors influencing the sensitivity and resistance to cisplatin. In this study, we used C elegans to explore cisplatin effects on mitochondrial functions and investigate cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity through a high-resolution system for evaluating locomotion. First, we report that a high-glucose diet sensitizes C elegans to cisplatin at the physiological level and that mitochondrial CED-13 protects the cell from cisplatin-induced oxidative stress. Additionally, by assessing mitochondrial function with a Seahorse XFe96 Analyzer, we observed a detrimental effect of cisplatin and glucose on mitochondrial respiration. Second, because catechol-O-methyltransferases (involved in dopamine degradation) are upregulated upon cisplatin exposure, we studied the protective role of dopamine against cisplatin-induced neurotoxicity. Using a Tierpsy Tracker system for measuring neurotoxicity, we showed that abnormal displacements and body postures in cat-2 mutants, which have dopamine synthesis disrupted, can be rescued by adding dopamine. Then, we demonstrated that dopamine treatment protects against the doseoependent neurotoxicity caused by cisplatin
