Thermal Transport and Flow in Polymeric Materials

The strong coupling of mechanical and thermal effects in polymer processing flows has profound implications on both the processability and final properties of polymeric materials. Simple molecular arguments suggest that Fourier’s law must be generalized to allow for anisotropic thermal conductivity in flowing polymer melts. In addition, theoretical results suggest a linear relationship between the thermal conductivity tensor and stress tensor, or a stress-thermal rule. Using a novel optical method based on Forced Rayleigh Scattering (FRS) developed in our laboratory, we obtain quantitative measurements of all components of the thermal diffusivity tensor in polymers subjected to deformation. These data have been used to carry out the first (and only) tests of the stress-thermal rule, which we have found to be valid for several polymer chemistries in both shear and elongational deformations. More recently, we have developed a novel technique based on Infrared Thermography (IRT) that complements FRS, and allows for the study of a wider range of polymeric materials. These experiments are used to develop an understanding of the molecular origins of thermal transport in deforming polymers

Head injuries are one of the most frequent causes of death and disability. Very often head injuries require long and expensive treatment. This paper analyzed traumatic head injuries on 56 subjects treated on Integrated Emergency Hospital Admission – Locality Sušak. The main goal of this paper is to determine frequency and type of injuries in 2018. The results of this research showed that 88 % of all injuries were hematomas and 12 % of all injuries were scull fractures. Head injuries are most frequent with patients 15 – 64 years of age. Almost two thirds of all tested subjects are male sex. This paper showed that in treating head injuries timely and expert treatment is of the most importance which is why the role of expert and psychologically educated staff must be emphasized. Extra effort is needed in raising awareness about the seriousness of head injuries and prevention of their causes which should be the focus more detailed research in the future

Simultaneous stress and birefringence measurements during uniaxial elongation of polystyrene melts with narrow molecular weight distribution

Tensile stress and flow-induced birefringence have been measured during uniaxial elongation at a constant strain rate of two polystyrene melts with narrow molecular weight distribution. For both melts, the stress- optical rule (SOR) is found to be fulfilled upto a critical stress of 2.7MPa, independent of strain rate and temperature. Estimation of the Rouse times of the melts, from both the zero-shear viscosity and the dynamic-shear moduli at high frequency, shows that the violation of the SOR occurs when the strain rate multiplied by the Rouse time of the melt exceeds by approximately 3. The presented results indicate that in contrast to current predictions of molecular theories, the regime of extensional thinning observed by Bach et al. (2003) extends well beyond the onset of failure of the SOR, and therefore the onset of chain stretch in the non-Gaussian regim

Hogfish (Labridae: Lachnolaimus maximus ) is distributed across several biogeographic regions, but its stock structure has been poorly documented, confounding stock assessment and management of this reef fishery species. In this study the genetic structure of hogfish over a portion of its southeastern U.S. range was examined by using a suite of 24 microsatellite DNA loci. Fin clips from 719 specimens were obtained from geographic locations ranging from northwest Florida through North Carolina. Genomic proportions of hogfish were partitioned into 3 distinct genetic clusters, geographically delineated as 1) the eastern Gulf of Mexico, 2) the Florida Keys and the southeast coast of Florida, and 3) the Carolinas. Clusters 1 and 2 converged along the coastal area west of the Florida Everglades, but the location of the genetic break between clusters 2 and 3 requires further study because of a discontinuity in specimen collection between southeast Florida and the Carolinas. The geographically limited reproductive exchange in this species indicates that future stock assessments should incorporate regionally partitioned analyses of life history and fishery data.Fil: Villanueva Gomila, Gabriela Lujan.
