The characteristics, experiences and perceptions of registered massage therapists in New Zealand: Results from a national survey of practitioners

Background: Massage therapy is widely recognized as offering many health benefits, with a growing number of studies finding it has value in stress management, pain reduction, and overcoming physical limitations. However, there are few studies of massage therapists practices and perceptions in New Zealand and internationally. This paper reports the findings from the first national survey examining the characteristics, perceptions, and experiences of New Zealand-based massage therapists on a range of aspects related to their role and practices. Purpose: This study sought to ascertain the characteristics, experiences, and perceptions of massage therapists in New Zealand, particularly in the aspects of: integration of health care; attitudes and practices related to research; and evidence and attitudes to registration. Setting: Massage practice in New Zealand (nationwide survey). Participants: Members of Massage New Zealand (a massage practitioners association). Research Design: Massage practitioners were surveyed online, using a 65-part questionnaire, on a range of characteristics of their practices and their attitudes to research, integration, and registration. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. Main Outcome Measures: Four hundred massage therapists (MTs) were invited to participate and 115 responded, providing a response rate of 29%. MTs valued research (95%) and perceived that it had an impact for their practices (88%). Significant correlations were found for research value and: mean case-load (p = .009) and level of academic qualification (p = .004). The majority of MTs (79%) supported integration with conventional practitioners, and 83% referred clients to general practitioners, with 75% receiving referrals from general practitioners. Ninety-three percent of MTs supported registration, with 67% of those supporting statutory registration. Conclusion: Massage practitioners perceive that they make a significant contribution to health care, but area of practice, such as research, and referral and integration into mainstream health care require more in-depth investigation
The characteristics, experiences and perceptions of naturopathic and herbal medicine practitioners: Results from a national survey in New Zealand

Background: Despite the popularity of naturopathic and herbal medicine in New Zealand there remains limited data on New Zealand-based naturopathic and herbal medicine practice. Methods: An online survey (covering 6 domains: demographics; practice characteristics; research; integrative practice; regulation and funding; contribution to national health objectives) was administered to naturopaths and herbal medicine practitioners. From a total of 338 naturopaths and herbal medicine practitioners, 107 responded providing a response rate of 32%. Data were statistically analysed using STATA. Results: A majority of the naturopaths and herbal medicine practitioners surveyed were female (91%), and aged between 45 and 54 years. Most practiced part-time (64%), with practitioner caseloads averaging 8 new clients and over 20 follow-up clients per month. Conclusions: There is a need for greater understanding and communication between practitioners of conventional care and naturopathic and herbal medicine which could support informed, coordinated and effective health provision within the New Zealand health care system. There is a need for further in-depth research examining naturopaths and herbal medicine practitioners' perceptions and practices, to provide insights of benefit to all those practising and managing health services as well as those directing health policy in New Zealand
Grand Unification of Quark and Lepton FCNCs
In the context of Supersymmetric Grand Unified theories with soft breaking
terms arising at the Planck scale, it is generally possible to link flavor
changing neutral current and CP violating processes occurring in the leptonic
and hadronic sectors. We study the correlation between flavor changing squark
and slepton mass insertions in models \`a la SU(5). We show that the
constraints coming from lepton flavor violation exhibit a strong impact on

Four Generations: SUSY and SUSY Breaking
We revisit four generations within the context of supersymmetry. We compute
the perturbativity limits for the fourth generation Yukawa couplings and show
that if the masses of the fourth generation lie within reasonable limits of
their present experimental lower bounds, it is possible to have perturbativity
only up to scales around 1000 TeV. Such low scales are ideally suited to
incorporate gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, where the mediation scale
can be as low as 10-20 TeV. The minimal messenger model, however, is highly
constrained. While lack of electroweak symmetry breaking rules out a large part
of the parameter space, a small region exists, where the fourth generation stau
is tachyonic. General gauge mediation with its broader set of boundary
conditions is better suited to accommodate the fourth generation.Comment: 27 pages, 5 figure
Neutrino Anomalies in Gauge Mediated Model with Trilinear R violation
The structure of neutrino masses and mixing resulting from trilinear
violating interactions is studied in the presence of the gauge mediated
supersymmetry breaking. Neutrino masses arise in this model at tree level
through the RG-induced vacuum expectation values of the sneutrinos and also
through direct contribution at 1-loop. The relative importance of these
contributions is determined by the values of the strong and weak coupling
constants. In case of purely couplings, the tree contribution
dominates over the 1-loop diagram. In this case, one simultaneously obtains
atmospheric neutrino oscillations and quasi-vacuum oscillations of the solar
neutrinos if all the \l' couplings are assumed to be of similar magnitudes.
If R parity violation arises from the trilinear \l couplings, then the loop
induced contribution dominates over the tree level. One cannot simultaneously
explain the solar and atmospheric deficit in this case if all the \l
couplings are of similar magnitude. This however becomes possible with
hierarchical \l and we give a specific example of this.Comment: 26 pages Latex, 2 figures, certain sections rewritten, improved

Results from PAMELA, ATIC and FERMI : Pulsars or Dark Matter ?
It is well known that the dark matter dominates the dynamics of galaxies and
clusters of galaxies. Its constituents remain a mystery despite an assiduous
search for them over the past three decades. Recent results from the
satellite-based PAMELA experiment detect an excess in the positron fraction at
energies between 10-100 GeV in the secondary cosmic ray spectrum. Other
experiments namely ATIC, HESS and FERMI show an excess in the total electron
(\ps + \el) spectrum for energies greater 100 GeV. These excesses in the
positron fraction as well as the electron spectrum could arise in local
astrophysical processes like pulsars, or can be attributed to the annihilation
of the dark matter particles. The second possibility gives clues to the
possible candidates for the dark matter in galaxies and other astrophysical

Sneutrino Vacuum Expectation Values and Neutrino Anomalies Through Trilinear R-parity Violation
Neutrino mass spectrum is reanalyzed in supersymmetric models with explicit
trilinear violation. Models in this category are argued to provide
simultaneous solution to the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies. It is
shown specifically that large mixing and hierarchical masses needed for the
vacuum solution of neutrino anomalies arise naturally in these models without
requiring any additional symmetries or hierarchies among the trilinear
