La mutualitĂ nel caregiving: una revisione della letteratura
Mutuality, considered the feeling of intimacy and the positive relationship between a caregiver and a arereceiver, is gaining an increasing interest in the international research arena, on the light of the socio-demographic changes and the increase in chronic degenerative diseases. The purpose of this article is to make a critical analysis of the literature on
mutuality in order to identify its predictors and outcomes. A literature review was performed with the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycInfo, ASSIA and Pciological Abstract. Twenty articles were selected. From the critical
analysis of the literature mutuality emerges as key variable in the process of caregiving and in the mental and physical health of the caregiver and carereceiver. In caregivers, high levels of mutuality are associated with less stress, depression
and burden and a better quality of life and perceived health; in patients, high mutuality improves the recovery process from an illness, reduces anxiety and depression and improves the quality of life. Future studies aimed at the study of this
variable also in the Italian population could support the development of programs to improve the quality of life of caregivers
and carereceiver
Contextual Coding in Qualitative Research Involving Participants with Diverse Sociocultural Backgrounds
Understanding participants' perspectives in qualitative research is contingent on unravelling the essential meaning of their speech. When data are collected in native language and translated into English language, the underlying sociocultural meaning of participants' speech can be missed. This paper discusses a new contextual coding approach and illustrates its application in research. The technique was used in a phenomenological study in Pakistan and a mixed methods study in Europe. Contextual coding entails a preliminary coding stage involving data reading in native language, choosing socially and culturally relevant words and phrases, and developing preliminary codes. The concluding coding stage focuses on creating a sociocultural query list, seeking answers through discussions among multilingual individuals, and finding a common language for code description. Contextual coding can enable researchers to understand sociocultural meaning of their data at an early stage, rather than waiting at the later stage of theme development to contextualize the findings
Social media and nurse education: an integrative reviewof the literature
Introduction. The exponential advance of social media has touched all areas of society, no exception for
the professional and personal lives of healthcare people. The issue to be considered is not whether or not
social media are being used, but how they are used. The line between proper and improper use, and even
abuse, of social media is a subtle one. Thus, the key issue is to be aware of the tool that is being used and
this should be supported with suitable training for healthcare professionals and, at an even earlier stage,
for students at healthcare training institutions during their studies.
Objective. To describe, through an integrative review of the literature, the use of social media by teachers
and students during teaching activity and practical training courses.
Materials and methods. An integrative review of the literature was conducted in October 2014. The literature
search was performed by consulting the main biomedical databases: PubMed, CINAHL and Embase.
Results. The literature search brought up a total of 854 citations. 804 abstracts were excluded as they were
not relevant. Of the remaining 50, 31 were excluded for not meeting the general criteria and, hence, only 19
articles were included. Two aspects emerged from the works selected: the use and potential of social media
in nursing education and the ethical and professional implications of their use.
Conclusions. The analysis of the literature reveals two areas for further investigation: evaluating the
level of moral awareness in nursing education with regards to the use of Web 2.0 communication tools
and implementing teaching methods to promote the construction and development of moral reasoning in
professionals
Validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Oral Assessment Guide
Mucositis is a frequent side-effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Assessment of oral cavity is important to
detect alterations in the mouth and plan appropriate interventions. A reliable tool can help to have a better assessment
of mucositis and a major knowledge about this phenomenon. Since no valid and reliable tool for the assessment
of mucositis is still available in Italy, the aim of this study was to establish the validity and reliability of the
Italian version of the Oral Assessment Guide (OAG). A panel of health care experts established the content validity
of the tool both for the items and the descriptors. To establish the reliability of the tool, a sample of 14 inpatients
with haematological diseases were recruited. Couples of dental hygienists separately performed 60 pairs of
assessments (for a total of 120 assessments) on the sample. The Italian version of OAG was found to have an acceptable
Content Validity Index (CVI) for items and related descriptors ranging between 0.67 and 1. Cronbach’s alpha
was 0.84, agreement of assessment ranged between 0.87 and 0.65 with Cohen’s Kappa coefficient ranging from
good to very good. This study showed that the Italian version of the OAG has good psychometric properties of
validity and reliability to assess mucositis in patients undergoing chemotherapy. This tool will have a great importance
to carry out future research in Italy aimed to improve the patient's outcomes particularly in terms of functional
ability and quality of life
Gli interventi educativi per i pazienti con scompenso cardiaco: una sintesi della letteratura
Patient education is recognized as a central component of heart failure care and reduces hospital readmissions. Nurses have an important role in providing patient education and modifying self-care behaviors. The aim of this article is to examine characteristics of educational interventions for heart failure patients, their measured outcomes and the role of nurses in providing education. We conducted a literature review of the last 10 years and considered 30 articles. Multisession motivational interventions, repeated over time and with different follow-up interventions seem to produce the best results. However, some aspects remain controversial
Nurses' reporting of suspect adverse drug reactions: a mixed-methods study
Objective. To assess nurses’ knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) towards spontaneous
adverse drug reactions (ADRs) reporting.
Methods. The mixed-method study was conducted following a quanti-qualitative sequential
approach: a survey (using a KAP questionnaire) followed by a focus group was
performed.
Results. In the quantitative findings, responders (570 hospital nurses) declared that they
were unaware of the pharmacovigilance system (58.1%, n = 331); where to find the reporting
form (63.5%, n = 362); how fill it in (71.6%, n = 408); to whom and how to send
it (65.8%, n = 375). Only 11.1% (n = 63) reported ADRs. The qualitative phase supported
the quantitative findings and provided new information about other factors that
condition ADR reporting: misinterpretation of the meaning of “reporting”, unawareness
of nurses’ autonomy in ADR reporting and fear of consequences after ADR reporting.
Conclusion. Nurses are not fully aware of their role in ADR reporting. We recommend
educational interventions and management changes
Educazione terapeutica ai malati oncologici: esperienza degli infermieri italiani
Introduction. Therapeutic patient’ education is a complex process requiring a proper level of communication between the patient and the healthcare professional. Nurses play a key role in providing the patients and their families with educational activities. Objective: This paper is the report of a study which investigates the experiences of some Italian nurses with regards to their role in therapeutic education to cancer patients. Methods: Qualitative research. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 52 nurses working in different Local Health Service Units of two northern Italy regions: Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. To identify categories and items arising from the data, the researchers used a qualitative content analysis. Results: The interview format was classified into six main categories: a) Patient education as daily care activity; b) Relevance of communication and dialogue for educational purposes; c) Relative usefulness of written information; d) Therapeutic education recording; e) Patients’ feedbacks as a tool for assessing therapeutic education; and f) Difficult communication. Conclusions: The experience of nurses in terms of their professional role in therapeutic education for cancer patients shows the steady presence of educational activities carried out in a non-planned way. This research confirms the need to launch educational interventions for nurses. Implications for Practice: It is essential to implement an action plan to promote opportunities of professional training in the field since among the most frequent reasons for project failure in therapeutic education is the lack of expert human resource
Impact of a nursing information system in clinical practice: a longitudinal study project
Background: The implementation of adequate clinical information systems helps to deal with the immense
flow of health data to ensure the continuity of care and access to a safe and high-quality healthcare system.
Currently there is an increasing awareness of the importance of evaluating and measuring the impact of such
systems in clinical practice. Implementations often fail, due to inadequate interaction between technology
and human elements.
Methods: This article describes a research project aimed at evaluating the impact of a clinical nursing information
system (CNIS), called Professional Assessment Instrument (PAI), in clinical practice. The study will
evaluate PAI Quality, Nurses Satisfaction, PAI Use, Nurses and Environment Characteristics, Net Benefits
and Nurses’ Experiences related to the PAI use. A theoretical model developed for this research will guide
the study. A quali-quantitative longitudinal design will be performed involving two hospitals over a 9-month
period. To measure different dimensions that affect the success/failure of CNIS we will use different tools/
methods of data collection (questionnaires, psychometric tools, surveys and focus groups).
Expected Results: This study will evaluate the impact of a CNIS in hospitals providing an overview of the
factors which can help and hinder the implementation of an information system.
Conclusions: The results of the study will support interventions to improve and implement clinical information
systems designed to computerize nursing data, with positive effects on public health and research
in general, providing further evidence for health policy
The Role of Spirituality in Stroke Survivors and Their Caregivers: A Systematic Review
although several studies have analyzed the effects of spirituality on stroke survivors' physical functioning and their caregiver's outcomes, no systematic review or meta-synthesis was found to identify the lived experiences of stroke survivors and caregivers regarding spirituality. for these reasons, this study aimed to analyze quantitively and qualitatively research relating to stroke survivors' and caregivers' experiences. the included studies were RCT studies, quasi-experimental studies, qualitative, descriptive, ethnographic, and phenomenological studies, and cross-sectional studies (n = 37), with a total of 6850 stroke survivors and 1953 caregivers enrolled. Spirituality appears to play an important role in improving the quality of life and decreasing anxiety and depression of both stroke survivors and their caregivers
